Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 6

The organization has members that participate in nationally coordinated campaigns supporting peace. Members have the right to participate in the development and implementation of programs. The organization does not have shareholders.

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 7A

Members actively involved in chapters and affilates or with national organization play a role in choosing leadership at the local, state and national level.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The finance director, executive director, president, and governing board all review the 990 before it is filed. Document is sent to board members to review and ask questions.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

The policy is distributed to each board member upon acceptance on board. There is an expectation that board members will report any conflict. If any issue arises, the executive committee address situation. Board members agree to avoid conflicts of interest, agree to disclose to the board situations or areas in which they have any impediment to being impartial and loyal, such as if i have conflicting duties to other entities where my allegiance might be split between this organization and another, or if they have some other personal, professional, business or volunteer position, responsibility, or interest (such as serving as a vendor or contractor to the organization). Board members are reminded of the policy during board meetings and a copy of policy is sent with 990 review as a reminder.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

Part III, Line 4A - First Accomplishment

Communication, education and advocacy: peace action mails action alerts to its membership list and sends daily updates to its list of affiliates and online activists. Peace action provides supporters weekly email alerts on crucial peace issues. Peace action continues to support and grow its online activist list with over 85,000 members and groups, reaching another 100,000 activists via peace action national and affiliate listservs. Peace action maintains its website at www.peaceaction.org. War powers: peace action continued to mobilize grassroots support for an open debate in congress on the required authorization of military force for the wars the u.s. Is still engaged in. Peace action continued to press for repeal and replacement of the authorization for the use of military force, the legislation the bush, obama, and trump administrations have used to justify military campaigns throughout the world. Iran: peace action played a significant role in winning the nuclear deal and peace accord that ended the crisis over iran's nuclear program. In the first year of biden's term in office, peace action scored some success in reopening negotiations with iran. Through a series of mail, phone and email alerts to members of its grassroots network paef worked to prevent opponents of the deal from poisoning negotiations with iran. The war on yemen: the war on yemen, where a u.s. Backed coalition, led by saudi arabia, executes a ruthless bombing campaign in which hospitals, schools and other civilian targets have been destroyed. Peace action worked to block arms sales and military aid to saudi arabia and its allies and to end all u.s. Support for the saudi-led military action. Budget priorities: peace action continued its support of the people's budget, a budget alternative offered by the congressional progressive caucus. Each year, we seek more cosponsors and supporters for the people's budget than the previous year. Supporting the people's budget provides peace action the opportunity to educate policy makers, the media and the general public on the issues surrounding the growing runaway pentagon budget. Peace action organized several calling and email campaigns around key votes in congress on military budget issues and generated hundreds of news articles and letters to the editor in local press across the country around its people's budget campaign. In 2021, peace action chapters and members participated in tax day actions across the us as part of the global days of action on military spending. For several years now, peace action chapters led dozens of tax day actions, a staple of local organizing around the country. Peace action chapters conducted public education and outreach events and with the assistance from the national office, disseminated fact sheets and organized resources to help make these events effective. Disarmament: peace action participates in the nuclear weapons working group, the alliance for nuclear accountability and the fissile materials working group to coordinate advocacy and actions around a broad range of issues from budget cuts in nuclear weapons spending to advocacy for a un approved ban on nuclear weapons. Peace action supported bills in both the house and senate. Peace action continued its support of the smarter approach to nuclear expenditures act, or the sane act, designed to slash u.s. Nuclear weapons expenditures by $100 billion over the next decade. The sane act has become a focal point for congressional education and grassroots organizing around nuclear weapons issues, serving as a policy alternative to plans for 'modernizing' the nuclear weapons complex. Peace action also worked on other legislation including bills to prohibit the research and development, production, and deployment of smaller, more 'usable' nuclear weapons and limit the president's authority to launch a nuclear attack without a congressional declaration of war or in response to a nuclear attack. Finally, peace action continued its cam

Form 990, Part III, Line 4B - Second Accomplishment

Organizational development: every other week conference calls are organized by peace action's national office to monitor progress and further communication and information sharing. The conference calls help coordinate near-term legislative and organizing strategy and share grassroots success stories around paef's nationally coordinated campaigns.

Form 990, Part III, Line 4C - Third Accomplishment

Affiliate and member services: peace action co-hosts an annual national organizer's meeting bringing together activists from across the country to set targets, objectives, strategies and tactics for national organizing campaigns. Also, a number of surveys were developed for individual members and chapters/affiliates to gather input on membership and other organizational issues. These surveys would provide a more structured avenue for gathering and sharing input and to help focus the work of the national organization. Peace action staff developed a series of resources including briefing papers and fact sheets in support of our campaigns; a line of flyers, placards, postcards to congress, sample press releases, and other key constituent-specific campaign materials.
