FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

Peace action is a national, grassroots based organization that works to build citizen support for budget priorities that fund human needs instead of endless war, eliminate weapons of mass destruction, and increase international cooperation.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

Communication, education and advocacy: peace action mails action alerts to its membership list and sends daily updates to its list of affiliates and online activists. Peace action provides supporters weekly email alerts on crucial peace issues. Peace action continues to support and grow its online activist list with over 85,000 members and groups, reaching another 100,000 activists via peace action national and affiliate listservs. Peace action maintains its website at www.peaceaction.org. Isis and the war on afghanistan: peace action continued to mobilize grassroots support for a negotiated settlement to the syrian civil war and has continued to press for full and, as is also the case with our work to end the war on afghanistan, open debate in congress on the required authorization of military force. Peace action provided regular updates on fast moving events throughout the region. Peace action continued to press for repeal and replacement of the authorization for the use of military force, the fig leaf legislation the bush, obama and now trump administration's use to justify military campaigns throughout the world. Iran: peace action played a significant role in winning a peace accord that ended the crisis over iran's nuclear program. In 2018, peace action continued to track and oppose legislation to impose sanctions or take other measures that would undermine the accord. Much of peace action's work has centered on preventing those who favor threats and intimidation over diplomacy from winning a new round of punishing sanctions to force iran to knuckle under. Such measures poison negotiations and potentially lead to military action. During the 1st half of 2018, peace action focused grassroots pressure on congress and the administration through a series of mail, phone and email alerts to peace action members and chapters in an effort to prevent the trump administration from withdrawing from the iran nuclear deal. This work continued after trumps decision to withdraw from the accord to block efforts to reimpose sanctions and take threatening actions against iran that could spark a war. The war on yemen: the war on yemen, where a u.s. Backed coalition, led by saudi arabia, executes a ruthless bombing campaign hospitals, schools and other civilian targets have been destroyed. Peace action worked to block arms sales and military aid to saudi arabia and its allies. Toward the end of 2018 peace action led a nationally coordinated grassroots campaign to secure passage in the senate of legislation directing the president to end u.s. Support and participation in the saudi-led war. Budget priorities: peace action's move the money coalition continued its support of the people's budget, a budget alternative offered by the congressional progressive caucus. Each year, we seek more cosponsors and supporters than the previous year. Supporting the people's budget provides peace action the opportunity to educate policy makers, the media and the general public on the issues surrounding the growing runaway pentagon budget. Efforts to grow support for the people's budget involve organizing campaigns on the national and local levels. Much of this outreach and education was directed at the abuse of the overseas contingency operations account which the pentagon was using to get around budget caps imposed by the budget control act. Peace action organized several calling and email campaigns around key votes in congress on military budget issues and generated hundreds of news articles and letters to the editor in local press across the country around its move the money campaign. In 2018, peace action participated in the 9th annual global days of action on military spending which produced tax day actions across the us and in over 20 other counties. Peace action chapters led dozens of tax day actions, a staple of local organizing around the country. Peace action chapters conducted public education and outreach events and with the assistance from the nati

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4C

Affiliate and member services: peace action co-hosts with peace action education fund an annual gathering in washington dc of key organizers and volunteer leaders from its chapter network to coordinate advocacy and organizing strategy and messaging. Peace action organizes bi-weekly conference calls to continue this process through the year that follows. Peace action's national office also provided access to a service, salsa labs, which provides affiliates the capability to develop and maintain an online constituent management system to coordinate outreach and messaging to a much larger audience. Also, a number of surveys were developed for individual members and chapters/affiliates to gather input on membership and other organizational issues. These surveys would provide a more structured avenue for gathering and sharing input and to help focus the work of the national organization.
