FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

Peace action is a grassroots-based national organization committed to organizing a citizen movement in favor of eliminating war and violence as acceptable means of resolving conflict at home and abroad. Peace action seeks u.s. Leadership for the multilateral abolition of nuclear weapons and other means of mass destruction, for ending the international arms trade, for significantly reducing worldwide military expenditures and implementing an effective program of economic conversion. Peace action supports the development of creative, democratic, international, non-military peacekeeping initiatives and institutions, in the context of globally sustainable and economically just societies dedicated to ensuring basic human rights.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

Movement in terms of strategy and funding for the war on afghanistan. However, working with congressional allies, peace action continued to press for repeal and replacement of the authorization for the use of military force, the fig leaf legislation the bush, obama and now trump administrations use to justify military campaigns throughout the world. Iran: peace action played a significant role in winning a peace accord that ended the crisis over iran's nuclear program. In 2016, peace action continued to track and oppose legislation to impose sanctions or take other measures that would undermine the accord. Much of peace action's work has centered on preventing those who favor threats and intimidation over diplomacy from winning a new round of punishing sanctions to force iran to knuckle under. Such measures poison negotiations and potentially lead to military action. Over the course of 2016, peace action focused grassroots pressure on congress and the administration through a series of mail, phone and email alerts to peace action members and chapters. This work continued after completion of the accord as opponents continued to attempt to unravel the deal. Isis and the war on yemen: the advance of the so-called islamic state (sometimes referred to as isis) in iraq and syria caught the us national security apparatus by surprise. A sustained bombing campaign has increased the chaos in both countries. Peace action mobilized grassroots support for a negotiated settlement to the syrian civil war and has continued to press for full and, as is the case with our work on afghanistan, open debate in congress on the required authorization of military force. Peace action made educational resources about isis available to its members and provided regular updates on fast moving events in the region. The war on yemen: a u.s. Backed coalition, led by saudi arabia, executes a ruthless bombing campaign where hospitals, schools and other civilian targets have been destroyed. Peace action worked to block the sale of cluster bombs and other weapons and military aid to saudi arabia and its allies. Budget priorities: peace action's move the money coalition continued its support of the people's budget, a budget alternative offered by the congressional progressive caucus. Each year, we seek more cosponsors and supporters than the previous year. Supporting the people's budget provides peace action the opportunity to educate policy makers, the media and the general public on the issues surrounding the growing runaway pentagon budget. Efforts to grow support for the people's budget involve organizing campaigns on the national and local levels. Much of this outreach and education was directed at the abuse of the overseas contingency operations account which the pentagon was using to get around budget caps imposed by the budget control act. Also, outreach and education focused on peace action's work to cancel the f-35. Peace action organized several calling and email campaigns around key votes in congress on military budget issues and generated hundreds of news articles and letters to the editor in local press across the country around its move the money campaign. In 2016, peace action participated in the 7th annual global days of action on military spending which produced tax day actions across the us and in over 20 other counties. Peace action chapters led dozens of tax day actions, a staple of local organizing around the country. Peace action chapters conducted public education and outreach events and with the assistance from the national office, disseminated fact sheets and organized resources to help make these events effective. Disarmament: peace action participates in the nuclear weapons working group, the alliance for nuclear accountability and the fissile materials working group to coordinate advocacy and actions around a broad range of issues from advocacy for a middle east nuclear free zone treaty to efforts to cut funding for nuclear weapons. Pea

To a much larger audience. Also, a number of surveys were developed for individual members and chapters/affiliates to gather input on membership and other organizational issues. These surveys would provide a more structured avenue for gathering and sharing input and to help focus the work of the national organization.

PEACE ACTION MAINTAINS ITS WEBSITE AT WWW.PEACEACTION.ORG. AFGHANISTAN: IN PRESIDENT OBAMA'S FINAL YEAR IN OFFICE, THERE WAS LITTLE MOVEMENT IN TERMS OF STRATEGY AND FUNDING FOR THE WAR ON AFGHANISTAN. BACKED COALITION, LED BY SAUDI ARABIA,EXECUTES A RUTHLESS BOMBING CAMPAIGN WHERE HOSPITALS, SCHOOLS AND OTHER CIVILIAN TARGETS HAVE BEEN DESTROYED.
