A RESIDENT MIDWIFE PROVIDES REGULAR CHECK-UPS AND QUICK ACCESS TO HOSPITAL SERVICES WHEN NEEDED. TO DATE THE LIE-IN-WAIT HOUSE HAS A 100% SUCCESS RATE FOR HEALTHY BIRTHS AND SERVED AS A STAGING SITE FOR 25% OF ALL PROJECT MERCY'S HOSPITAL BIRTHS IN 2014. IN NOVEMBER 2014, PROJECT MERCY OPENED A NEW HEALTH SCIENCE COLLEGE TO DECREASE INFANT MORTALITY RATES BY TRAINING NURSE MIDWIVES TO ASSIST BIRTHING MOTHERS DELIVER HEALTHY BABIES IN REMOTE, RURAL AREAS. IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0EDUCATION WAS IDENTIFIED BY THE YETEBON COMMUNITY AS THE OTHER PRIORITY NEED, IN ADDITION TO HEALTH CARE. PROJECT MERCY OPENED THE FIRST-EVER YETEBON SCHOOL IN 1996 WITH 358 STUDENTS IN GRADES K-2. TODAY, NEARLY TWO DECADES LATER, THE SCHOOL EDUCATES NEARLY 1,500 STUDENTS IN GRADES K-12. TWO NEW CLASSROOM BLOCKS WERE OPENED IN 2014 TO ALLEVIATE OVER-CROWDED CLASSROOMS IN THE LOWER GRADES WHILE A NEW HIGH SCHOOL/PREPARATORY SCHOOL BUILDING WAS OPENED FOR THE UPPER GRADE STUDENTS. MANY GRADUATES OF THE HIGH SCHOOL HAVE GONE ON TO COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY LEVELS AND ARE NOW EMPLOYED BY PROJECT MERCY AS TEACHERS, NURSES, SANITARIANS AND ACCOUNTANTS.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0LAUNCHED IN 2006, THE CHACHA DAIRY CATTLE BREEDING PROJECT IS PROJECT MERCY'S PRIMARY FOCUS IN THE HIGHLANDS OF THE AMHARA REGION. CROSSBREEDING JERSEY WITH INDIGENOUS CATTLE HAS RESULTED IN INCREASED MILK PRODUCTION BY UP TO 12 QUARTS PER DAY, COMPARED TO THE 2 QUARTS PRODUCED BY THE LOCAL BREEDS. THE INCREASED MILK PRODUCTION IS IMPROVING CHILDREN'S NUTRITION AND ALSO PROVIDING HIGHER INCOMES FOR LOCAL FAMILIES. SINCE 2013 THERE HAVE BEEN 35 HEIFERS DISTRIBUTED TO LOCAL FAMILIES. THOSE WHO RECEIVED HEIFERS, ALONG WITH OTHER FAMILIES, WERE PROVIDED TRAINING IN DAIRY FARM MANAGEMENT. THE LONG-TERM GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO DISTRIBUTE 1,000 CROSS-BRED COWS TO AREA FARMERS.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc0ALTHOUGH NOT YET OPERATIONAL, THERE ARE SEVERAL CONSTRUCTION INITIATIVES THAT ARE HAPPENING IN LEGATAFO. NEW ROADS ARE BEING BUILT THROUGHOUT THE COMMUNITY. THE CHILDREN'S INSTITUTE IS CURRENTLY BEING DEVELOPED AND THE FIRST SECTION OF SIX HOMES IS NEARLY COMPLETE. WHILE THE CHILDREN'S INSTITUTE IN LEGATAFO IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION, PROJECT MERCY IS CARING FOR 40 VULNERABLE CHILDREN IN YETEBON WHO ALL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO ATTEND SCHOOL, ENJOY THREE HOT MEALS PER DAY, AND HAVE ACCESS TO ROUTINE MEDICAL CARE.
