Activity 2

Comprehensive Senior Services, General/Other: Eldercare Services Institute, LLC (previously called Community Services) is the oldest program division of the Benjamin Rose Institute. Established more than fifty years ago, its purpose is to provide an array of home and community-based services for older adults and their caregivers which address needs, respect rights, and foster self-sufficiency. Division staff serve more than 6,000 persons in Cuyahoga County annually, offering help through advocacy, assessments, case management, consultation, help with daily living tasks, education, and support groups. In addition to these services, the following programs meet specific needs. Adult Day Care provides caregivers with respite while elders with dementia, mental illness, or mental retardation receive socialization, attention to health and hygiene, and increased opportunities for rehabilitation. Home Healthcare provides services such as nursing, including behavioral health nursing, personal care, medical social work, and physical, occupational and speech therapies. Mental Health serves older persons with such illnesses as dementia, depression, anxiety, chronic schizophrenia, and adjustment disorders. Clients receive help from mental health case managers and counselors. Senior Companion volunteers provide companionship and assistance to other older adults, who are often lonely and isolated. Social Services assist older clients experiencing problems like potential abuse or neglect, homelessness, and inability to function in their present setting. (Over 1400 Clients)

Gerontology (as a social science) Research: The Margaret Blenkner Research Institute (MBRI) of Benjamin Rose Institute: MBRI is a nationally and internationally known center for applied aging research that enhances the lives of older adults and the family members, friends, and professionals who care for them. Established in 1961, MBRI is one of the oldest applied gerontological research centers in the country. MBRI is renowned for the quality of its research and its ability to translate empirical findings into useful products for families, service providers, and policy makers. The MBRI is uniquely qualified to understand the challenges of long-term care reimbursement and service delivery because of its position within a service organization for older adults and their families. It also focuses on translating research findings for practice and policy applications. MBRI's research seeks to gain a deep understanding of issues or problems from the perspectives of older adults and family members and is organized into four major programs: 1) Services and Interventions For Chronic Cognitive, Physical and Mental Health Conditions; 2) Family Care Giving; 3) Quality of Long-term Care and Services; and 4) Program Evaluation. Additionally, MBRI specializes in: primary data collection with older adults, family caregivers, and health and social service providers; strong theoretical and conceptual frameworks; diverse methodology and psychometric testing; and a wide range of statistical analyses. The MBRI also includes The Benjamin Rose Library, which maintains an outstanding collection of materials on aging, gerontology, and geriatrics. Staff of the MBRI maintain affiliations with many local universities and provide students with a variety of opportunities for gaining research experience.
