Governance Explanations

The executive director and the treasurer review the 990 prior to filing. Upon completion of that review, a public inspection version of the 990 is distributed to the board of trustees.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Under this policy are covered members of the board and key employees. As soon as a possible conflict of interest is identified the same is deliberated and reviewed by the executive committee and / or board of trustee. If a potential conflict is found to exist, person identified will be precluded from a vote on the decision that is to be voted on.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15A

Six weeks prior to the termination date of the director's employment agreement, the executive committee reviews the employment agreement in effect, performs a review of the director's performance, and considers salary adjustment and any other proposed revisions for contract renewal. The executive committee and the finance committee review the changes and, with any adjustments they determine necessary, present their recommendation to the entire board, in executive session, at the annual meeting, for which contemporaneous minutes are kept. Board members who have experience with other boards they are on usually make comments that give comparative data to help gauge market conditions of salary levels at other organizations. After any further revisions as a result of deliberation by the board, the final compensation package is presented to the board for approval.

Financial Statement Notes

PART III, LINE 1A:

Longhouse maintains a collection of works of art. A description of the contents of the permanent collection is maintained by the collections manager and the collection is currently insured for approximately $2.8 million. The value of the collection, which was acquired through purchases and contributions since longhouse's inception, is not reflected as an asset on the statement of financial position. Purchases of collection items are expensed in the year of acquisition. Contributions of collection items are not recognized in the statement of activities. Proceeds from deaccessions or insurance recoveries are reflected on the statement of activities based on the absence or existence and nature of donor-imposed restrictions. There were no acquisitions during the year ended december 31, 2020. The collection is held for public service rather than financial gain, protected and preserved, and subject to an organizational policy that requires the proceeds from sales of such items to be used only for collection acquisitions, preservation, protection and direct care. Longhouse defines direct care to include costs for materials, systems, equipement, fees for experts, independent contractors, and outside vendors engaged in projects directly related to the care of the objects in the collection.

PART III, LINE 4:

Longhouse reserve holds, and insures about 250 objects it received since its original inception in 1991. These objects, mostly in the craft medium, are perfect fit for the longhouse reserve mission. These objects are on view and lent to various organizations for exhibit.

PART V, LINE 4:

The investment earnings of the organization's endowment funds are used to further the organization's programs and operations.

BECAUSE ALL TRANSACTIONS ARE ONLINE, WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO CAPTURE NAMES AND EMAIL ADDRESSES, THUS EXPANDING OUR DATABASE. DESPITE CANCELING MANY INSTALLATIONS, WE WELCOMED AT LHR THIS SUMMER AI WEIWEI'S CIRCLE OF ANIMALS/ZODIAC HEADS: BRONZE,12 MONUMENTAL BRONZE ANIMAL HEADS REPRESENTING THE TRADITIONAL FIGURES OF THE CHINESE ZODIAC, AND 83.5 ARC X 8 BY BERNAR VENET, KNOWN FOR HIS CURVED, MATHEMATICALLY PRECISE METAL SCULPTURES. BOTH INSTALLATIONS HAVE PROVEN TO BE QUITE POPULAR, WITH VIRTUALLY ALL OUR TIMED ADMISSIONS ON OUR OPEN DAYS SELLING OUT. WE BELIEVE THESE ARE ALSO A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR IN THE +30% INCREASE IN LONGHOUSE MEMBERSHIPS (HOUSEHOLDS) WE'VE EXPERIENCED THIS SEASON. GIVEN THE ONGOING SUCCESS OF OUR OPEN DAYS, WE HAVE REMAINED OPEN FOUR DAYS PER WEEK INTO DECEMBER, VS. OPENING ONLY TWO DAYS PER WEEK AFTER LABOR DAY, AS WE TYPICALLY HAVE DONE IN THE PAST. SINCE WE REOPENED ON JUNE 17, WE HAVE WELCOMED ALMOST 12,000 VISITORS TO LHR, ON PAR WITH 2019, DESPITE HAVING SIGNIFICANTLY FEWER EVENTS. BEGINNING IN JULY, WE IMPLEMENTED A LIMITED GUIDED TOUR SCHEDULE, CAPPING HEAD COUNT AT 12 PARTICIPANTS FOR BOTH OUR TWILIGHT TOURS AND SATURDAY GARDEN TOURS WITH OUR HORTICULTURALIST; THESE TOURS HAVE CONSISTENTLY SOLD OUT THROUGHOUT THE SEASON. OUR LIMITED PROGRAMS INCLUDED FAMILY DAY, DAHLIA DAY, AND AN ART FORAY THROUGHOUT THE MONTH OF OCTOBER, EACH OF WHICH IS DESCRIBED BELOW. MANY OF OUR VOLUNTEERS AGAIN DEMONSTRATED THEIR COMMITMENT TO, AND PASSION FOR, LHR EVEN DURING THIS CHALLENGING TIME, DONATING MORE THAN 300 HOURS OF THEIR TIME.
