| Statement of Program Service Accomplishments:PetSave Foundation has continued to fulfill its primary mission by rescuing, spaying/neutering, caring for and adopting out abandoned rabbits to new homes. On average, we cared for 100 rabbits within our foster system during 2013. We supplement our income by selling quality animal food, supplies and toys to people who adopt from us. We also offer boarding services to rabbit owners as a source of income. We continue to rescue rabbits from municipal shelters to prevent their being euthanized, space permitting. We continue to work within our previously created systems with the local shelters to reduce the total number of rabbits euthanized.During the summer of 2013, a woman who had been rescuing rabbits from death row at city shelters had her property vandalized and the vandal turned all of the rabbits loose in her yard. Unfortunately, while her intentions were good in the beginning, the situation got out of control and she had not spayed or neutered any of the rabbits. They were separate though, and unable to breed until the vandalization of her property. A neighbor saw all of these rabbits running loose and called animal control. The rabbits were about to be rounded up and taken to the county shelter that is notorious for their neglect of the rabbits in their care and their euthanasia rate is extremely high. A total of 25 rabbits were in danger of being euthanized and thats when we stepped in, had all of the rabbits spayed/neutered and have placed several of them in and continue to actively seek adoptive homes for the remainder. We have rescued dozens more from other sources such as previous adopters who changed their minds and returned the rabbits, other rescue groups, and good Samaritans who find rabbits that their owners have abandoned in inappropriate situations. With the downturn in the economy and the number of people losing their homes to foreclosure, the amount of abandoned rabbits is still significant. We continue to work with another foundation that obtains baby rabbits illegally sold on the streets of Los Angeles. These babies are confiscated by the Los Angeles Police Department from the illegal vendors and are taken in by rescue to prevent their being taken to a Los Angeles City Shelter, where they would be euthanized due to lack of shelter personnel to properly care for these fragile babies. These babies should be with their nursing mothers for eight weeks, but these illegal vendors take them from their mothers at 7-10 days old. They mislead the public by saying that these baby rabbits are three month old dwarfs that will stay that size but unfortunately most of them die shortly after sale. The ones that survive grow to be normal size - too big for the small housing initially purchased for them. They are at high risk for abandonment when they reach adult size.We assisted in coordinating/training bottle feeders who can properly feed and wean these babies. We help alleviate a bottle-neck situation by facilitating spay/neuter and subsequent adoption of the adults. This enables the other organization to free up space/resources for the next batch of confiscated babies. We successfully adopted out 75 rabbits with well screened and caring adopters. Sadly 5 rabbits were euthanized because they were ill beyond help. Just this year we lost the last of the rabbits from the mass rescue of 2002 due to old age but who lived out their lives in their adopted homes. Because the life expectancy of a rabbit is 8-12 years, we are proud that we were able to rescue so many from this raid, and give them good quality of life through their "senior" years after placing most of them in good forever" homes. We continue to dedicate a portion of our shelter for rescued cats. Our volunteers spend some of their time caring for and socializing the cats, as well as photographing and listing these cats on www.petfinder.com, etc.Our Foundation continues to provide information and education to prospective pet owners and the general public. We conduct educational tours to groups, focusing on youth groups such as Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and associations of home-schooled children and their parents. Visiting our facility provides an effective visual association with the magnitude of the rabbit overpopulation problem that exists as well as the viability of keeping rabbits as indoor pets.During educational tours, we stress the responsibility and commitment necessary before, during and after acquiring any pet. We stress proper care, spay/neutering as pet owner responsibilities and rabbit specific information. We strongly advocate adoption as a better option to purchasing from pet shops and breeders who in our opinion are part of the cause of pet overpopulation. We continue to be a very popular place for high school and college students to volunteer. Some of these students are required to complete a certain number of hours as part of their school curriculum, and for those who prefer to work with animals, we provide a unique opportunity for them because often the municipal shelters that mainly house dogs and cats have age requirements that would prevent them from accepting the help of these willing young volunteers. We are happy to make them welcome and to be a positive first volunteer experience for them.Of course, during their volunteer time with us, these young people get an education about respect for animals, the necessity of spaying/neutering their pets, the advantages of adopting vs. purchasing and an overall lesson regarding the scope of the pet overpopulation. We hope to influence the next generation to accept spay/neuter as a basic necessity as well as the value of volunteering as a way of life.We still house about 18 rabbits at 3 different Petco Stores. The volunteer that takes care of the rabbits at the Petco in Santa Clarita, California has been doing so for many years and has created a network of contacts in that area and helps local residents with a variety of rabbit issues. In essence, she has become a satellite offshoot of PetSave Foundation, sharing resources whenever feasible while still using our adoption and placement criteria. We continue to explore any and all options for funding while being always mindful of frugality in our spending. We continue to rely on volunteers for most of our labor as this is immensely helpful in keeping our operating costs as minimal as possible. In closing, we continue to maintain a clean, orderly facility, thus making the idea of rabbit ownership appealing to the public. We continue to help persons with domestic rabbit problems in many areas whenever possible and to the best of our abilities, and with the best use of available resources in order to reduce the incidence of abandonment and euthanasia. | $42,119 | - |
