Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Project Hawai'i, Inc., mission is to enhance the lives of homeless children and help them escape their cycle of poverty. Providing year round services to homeless and poverty stricken children on the islands of Hawai'i and O'ahu. Run 100% by volunteers and solely supported by public donations. Providing year round interactive solutions to help these children gain self-esteem, life and social skills to escape their cycle of poverty.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Project Hawaii Inc second accomplishment is our Holiday Christmas Party. Providing parties on both the big island and Oahu. This year we were able to provide services to over 650 homeless children living in poverty that would otherwise gone without the wonders of the holiday, let alone a healthy holiday meal. Our agency was able to also include an extra 86 children we found living on the streets of Kakaako on Oahu. Our holiday parties come complete with Santa visits and photos, games with life necessity prizes, healthy meals, make and take crafts and of course their holiday wishes to fill their hearts with joy. These children live in tents, cars and substandard housing, not knowing what day is different from the next, and never expecting a visit from Santa. This holiday is the most important to building their self esteem and letting them know they are worth a new toy, a new outfit and the joy of a holiday party made just for them.
Activity 3
Our outreach and awareness is not really 3rd in line, but it isn't quite as impacting as the other two. Our goal is to visit the homeless children across the island on a monthly basis to assure they have adequate hygiene, living necessities, food boxes, and other items they might be of need. We spend 3-5 days a month conducting outreach, seeking out new places, finding the truly hidden homeless children and bring them supplies. We spend 6 days a month conducting awareness in the community. Helping to get the community more involved and setting up collections for the homeless keiki needs. We also visit schools, work with teen programs and help the community develop plans and programs to help the over all success of the children's future. We also participate in various community events, charity events, public events that will help create an awareness and network to continue our services to the ever growing needs of homelessness in Hawaii

IRS990/ActivityOrMissionDescription0Project Hawaii Inc mission is to enhance the lives of homeless keiki living in poverty situations across the islands of Hawaii. We provide free services from life necessities, educational supplies, holiday events and parties, summer camp, educational programs, and other programs that will help them to escape the cycle of poverty. Our agency is run 100% by volunteers and solely supported by public donations.
IRS990/ActivityOther/Description0Our Spring Break Service and Easter Celebration. We spend the spring break providing the children with activities, meals, food boxes, and other needs that they go without during their long school break. It is vital to their health, being out of school for a week or longer, they will go without daily meals, and some will not even eat every day. We also provide them with activities that allow to keep their minds and bodies active and off their living situations. Easter is also another important self esteem building holiday. No child should ever go without the basics of life, and that includes the joy of being accepted and having a special holiday. We provide them with outfits, a healthy meal, educational and arts, as well a bunny bags filled with hygiene. Kites are an all time favorite for the children, so we make sure everyone gets a special kite as well. Might sound simple, and maybe silly, but that is their favorite!!
IRS990/ActivityOther/Description1Halloween Costume Workshop and not so typical trick or treat parade. This too is a life changing experience for the children. We are able to provide them with all sorts of Halloween costume parts and pieces, recycled materials and art items that they create their own outfits. Generally we see around 80-100 keiki at our events. Every child is able to be as creative as they like, create their own outfits, crowns, wands, capes, wings, outfits and so forth. This allows them to participate in school functions without feeling left out, and joy of making their own really helps with the self-esteem. The not so typical trick or treat parade allows them to show off their new costumes while collecting items they need, from school supplies, art products, hygiene and healthy snacks. They go back to their living situations with bags full of life necessities, a full tummy and a happy heart. This year we were able to include Oahu in this program as well.
IRS990/ActivityOther/Description2Emergency Care. We provide emergency care to those who have just become homeless, or those who have dealt with the "clean sweeps" of our new county laws here in Hawaii. These families are in an emergency state where they have nothing, just the clothing (or lack of) on their backs. We provide them with emergency care items, such as tents, sleeping bags, clothing, hygiene, food, "camp supplies" such as stoves, propane tanks, coolers, etc. While we typically only have a few emergencies a month, it is something we are always prepared for. Sometimes it is just helping with a few things, and other times it is providing a van load of items. This year we were able to help several dozen families that were displaced by the clean sweeps, and I know that truly makes a difference in their hope for survival, even if just for another day. Day by day these families live, and with our support, they grow with the hope of a better tomorrow and eventually are able to escape their situations of crisis.
IRS990/ActivityOther/Description3Healthy Hearts for Homeless Keiki is another program that helps these children know that they are cared for and can accomplish what they wish. This program helps to provide the children with new sports shoes and needed equipment to play school based sports. We provide the children the opportunity to be more involved with their school, classmates, and of course build life skills needed for the real world. Without this program, some of these children would drop out of school, or go down the wrong path after school. Keeping kids healthy and involved is half the struggle, getting them their needed supplies is the easy part. This year we were even able to get surf boards and equipment for a few high school students as Surfing is now a school based sport. Another example is a teen who wasn't letting his parents know he was being cut from the basketball team because he didn't have the appropriate shoes. So, we know this program works, and keeps these children growing healthy, mind, body and soul. This year were we able to provide 120 pairs of athletic shoes, and 20 children with their whole sports needs.
