Mission

To strengthen the capacity of United Ways across Ohio and to advance the common good for Ohioans.

Major Activities

Activity 2
MEMBER SUPPORT. Ohio United Way provides ongoing training, education, and support for member organizations. Additionally, OUW convenes resources to assist members in reaching their goals and proactively informing members of relevant issues and best practices. Training includes, but is not limited to the following community impact, organizational and resource development public policy advocacy in the areas of health and financial stabilty for families and education. OUW distributes the following 3 quarterly electronic newsletters to members and many diverse nonprofit subscribers Health and Human Service Trends, Legislative Bulletin and Ohio 2-1-1 Times. A weekly electronic newsletter, Newsbreak, is also distributed to promote and share events, information and news summaries relevant to local United Ways. Special notices and press releases are provided to inform members and other non profits about important issues as they occur. OUW maintains a website www.ouw.org that provides information regarding the organization, public policy, Ohio 2-1-1 legislative priorities and more.

2-1-1 GRANTS. 2-1-1 is an easy to remember 3-digit dialing code, available 24 hrs a day, 7 days per week, 365 days each year, which connects callers to a trained specialist who is available to assist Ohioans reach services they need. The need to connect individuals families throughout Ohio with health human resource info has never been greater. Using a robust database, callers are provided with info regarding local programs community-based organizations, Ohio Benefit Bank services, local faith-based initiatives government agency services available to help those in need. The call is free. Currently, Ohios 2-1-1 system has 20 call centers, which received over 1.3 million calls in 2011. 2-1-1 has proven itself to be a vital link in the event of a natural or man-made disaster. Call center staff are able to provide callers with up-to-date information on how to find food, shelter other items in the event of an emergency, working with state and local disaster planning teams to reduce calls to 9-1-1 for general information, and to free9-1-1 emergency resources.

IRS990/Description0PUBLIC POLICY/ GOVERNMENT RELATIONS.Ohio United Way OUW, our members and Public Policy Committee continue to be a resource for Ohio Legislators regarding health and human services policy development and the state budget regarding issues impacting health, education, and income. Each year OUWs Public Policy committee develops and publishes white papers outlining OUWs position on the years identified legislative priorities. OUW also works closely with our US Senators and members of Congress on issues affecting the work of non-profits and local United Ways as it relates to health and human services. In addition to regular visits to the Ohio statehouse and Washington DC, OUW hosts Lobby Day each April, bringing out members and Ohio legislators together for a legislative luncheon allowing our members to meet one-on-one with their local state legislators, and providing an opportunity to discuss local needs and issues.
