To improve the well-being of children made vulnerable by HIV, AIDS and poverty in Sub-Saharan Africa. Firelight Foundation (Firelight) supports grassroots organizations that help families and communities meet the needs of their children.

The federal Form 990 is reviewed in detail by the Treasurer, the finance committee and the Executive Director. It is then shared with the entire Board of Directors for their review before filing with the Internal Revenue Service.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12C

The Board members sign a conflict of interest policy on an annual basis. All Board members and Advisory Council members are asked at each meeting to declare any conflicts of interest they may have. If any conflicts of interest arise, the Board members will discuss the next steps and document how to rectify the situation. The conflict of interest policy for employees is incorporated into the employee handbook, which all employees sign when they are first employed and when there is a significant revision to the handbook. If a conflict of interest should arise, the conflict and the resolution of the conflict are documented in a memo reviewed by the Executive Director and/or the Human Resources Manager.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15

The Executive Director's salary is set by the Board of Directors, by reviewing other exempt organizations federal Form 990 and a compensation survey or study. Other employees' salaries are set according to a salary schedule where jobs are ranked and there is a predetermined salary range for each ranking. These ranges are benchmarked against other similar organizations, so that the salaries are both reasonable and competitive.

Financial Statement Notes

Part IV, Line 2B:

As of June 30, 2015 and 2014, Firelight held $90,636 and $44,237 of funds held as a fiscal agent for other parties, respectively. These funds will be delivered to the ultimate recipients in the upcoming year, as directed by the providers of the funds. This amount is shown as funds held as fiscal agent in the accompanying statements of financial position, as Firelight has no variance power over the ultimate use of the funds.

Part V, Line 4:

Firelight's policy is to make available on July 1 of each year, as expendable income, an amount equal to the greater of the yearly return of the previous fiscal year or four percent of the average of the long-term reserve fund's' total market value for the four quarters ending March 31 of the previous fiscal year. The Board of Directors may also authorize withdrawal of the principal of the quasi-endowment should it be determined to be in the best interest of Firelight.

Part X, Line 2:

In accordance with Accounting Standards Codification (ASC) Topic 740, Income Taxes, Firelight has evaluated its income tax positions for the years ended June 30, 2015 and 2014, and determined that there were no material uncertain tax positions. Accordingly, Firelight has not recognized any liability for unrecognized income tax. It is Firelight's policy to recognize interest and/or penalties related to uncertain tax positions, if any, in income tax expense.

IRS990/Desc0Awarded 55 grants totaling $790,890 to 35 organizations serving vulnerable children and their families in five countries in Africa. Funding was used to support 86,559 beneficiaries. Out of the beneficiaries reached, 51 percent are children and youth, 15 percent are family members or caregivers, and 34 percent are community members.Funded:Organizational capacity building (9 percent) supported improvements in both programming and operations of grantee organizations. Education funds (29 percent) supported school fees and materials, especially to enable girls to access secondary school, teacher training, tutoring support for children struggling in school, school infrastructure, and early childhood education and development. Operational support funds (24 percent of the funds) included salaries and overhead costs of our grantees running an organization. Economic strengthening (22 percent) empowered families to earn an income, helped youth develop skills to earn a livelihood, or supported organizational sustainability strategies. Child protection funds (9 percent) supported strategies that prevent or mitigate violence affecting children, protect child rights, and advocate on issues of child marriage and child labor. Health/HIV/AIDS funds (2 percent) supported training of community health workers to advocate for the needs and rights of children living with HIV and AIDS. Psychosocial support (3 percent) provided counseling and recreation to restore the emotional wellbeing of children. Physical welfare funds (2 percent) provided material assistance for children in health, hygiene, nutrition, and basic needs.Organizational capacity building provided training, mentoring, and facilitation of peer learning through local networks or learning circles, reaching 77 percent of grantee-partners.Organizational learning streamlined our monitoring and evaluation processes. Worked with partners to collect data on child outcomes and organizational development.
