TRAINING: Sage Bionetworks was awarded a major grant from the National Cancer Institute's Integrative Cancer Genetics Program (ICBP) to establish a new Center for Cancer Systems Biology (CCSB), which commenced operations on March 1, 2010. The Sage Bionetworks CCSB is a center of excellence for researchers interested in working at the leading edge of the clinical-computational biology interface. The training program pairs postdoctoral fellows with expertise in computational sciences together with postdoctoral fellows with clinical or biological experience to form complimentary teams. These teams develop predictive disease models in cancer research using DNA variation, gene expression, and clinical phenotypic data, and are developing new tools that can enable easy access and utilization of network models. The program includes mentoring with senior Sage Bionetworks researchers, independent research projects, classroom work and externships with other CCSB sites. The first of two concurrent pairs of Sage Bionetworks CCSB postdoctoral fellows was hired in the second half of 2010.

Activity 3

COMMONS PLATFORM and WASHINGTON PARTNERS PROGRAM: In 2010, Sage Bionetworks was awarded a grant from the Washington Life Sciences Discovery Fund ("LSDF") to support a computational Commons called Synapse and the Washington Partners Program ("WPP"). The Synapse platform is a new, open access environment for collaborative research on biological network models and their application to problems of human disease and biology. Synapse contains network models derived from global coherent datasets, the datasets themselves, and the analytical methods and code used to generate the network models. 2010 achievements included the recruitment and hiring of an expert software development team, the completion of the platform prototype project plan, and the curation and cataloging of intitial datasets. Currently available Sage datasets can be found at http://synapse.sagebase.org. Sage Bionetworks has also created the Washington Partners Program (WPP) to provide biomedical researchers in the state of Washington with strategic and cost-effective advanced genomics consultation and analysis. Proposals for 2011 WPP sponsored partnerships were solicited in 2010 and awarded in January 2011.
