Since the Coalition has no affiliation with any programs or program models, and does not conduct research itself, it serves as an objective source of expertise in the above areas. Once identified, these organizations will be highlighted by Guidestar's website, a leading source of information on U.S. nonprofits. Another key activity under this grant is the development of a short, clear taxonomy of evidence levels for social programs, along with concrete suggestions for funders on the level/type of investment that may be appropriate for programs that fall in each of the evidence categories. Advocacy of Increased Researcher Access to Federal DatabasesThis consisted of drafting a letter to the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Human Resources supporting its efforts to increase researcher access to the National Directory of New Hires. A key reason for our support was that such increased access has the potential to (i) greatly lower the cost and burden of conducting scientifically-rigorous evaluations of employment programs, and (ii) accelerate the development of credible evidence about what works to improve employment and earnings of U.S. workers. |

| IRS990/Description | 0 | MacArthur Foundation Grants: These grants fund several of the Coalition's primary program activities, including: 1) The Top Tier Evidence Initiative, which the Coalition launched to assist federal policymakers in identifying social program models meeting the top tier standard for evidence of effectiveness: "well-designed randomized controlled trials showing sizeable, sustained effects on important outcomes." This initiative's expert advisory panel has identified program models that meet this standard-or come close-in a wide range of policy areas, including K-12 education, teen pregnancy prevention, health care financing and delivery, substance use prevention, and others. Summaries of these programs and the evidence supporting them are disseminated for free to a wide variety of policymakers and practitioners through our email distribution list, and are also available for free on our websites: www.toptierevidence.org and www.evidencebasedprograms.org. 2) The convening of an expert advisory committee comprised of leading evidence-based researchers and practitioners to develop concrete, high priority next steps in a national strategy to accelerate evidence-based reform in U.S. social policy. This includes recommending next steps in the development and use of rigorous cost-benefit evidence targeted to top decision makers in federal and state government, philanthropic foundations, and social program provider organizations. 3) The launch of an open online workshop in evidence-based policy. The workshop is entitled, "How to Read Research Findings to Distinguish Evidence-Based Programs from Everything Else: User-Friendly Tools for Policy Officials and Stakeholders to Become Experts." It teaches the core skill needed to be an effective practitioner of evidence-based policy namely, the ability to read a study and readily assess whether it produced credible evidence. The workshop consists of five video presentations, totaling approximately 90 minutes in length, that are available at no charge from our website. |
