Mission and Program Overview

Mission

To Initiate and support primary education in rural Republic of South Sudan.

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Recording the transformational accomplishments of the Marol Academy calls for a brief emphasis upon the context of the circumstances under which its successes occurred. In 2011, by an astonishing popular vote exceeding 98%, the people of southern Sudan spoke in overwhelming unison breaking from the oppressive grip of the Khartoum regime and ending three decades of war. In short order a Dinka General, Salva Kier was elected President. In an attempt to maintain that unity, he chose the Nuer General Riek Machar who also fought against the Sudanese oppression as his vice-president. The future of the Republic of South Sudan (RSS) looked promising. But, by 2013 Machar broke with the new regime. In 2015, civil war between their factions afflicted the new nation in a competition expressed through the subjugation of other ethnicities to one or the other, as the two factions seized control of the assets of the Republic of South Sudan by wrenching the riches of the cities, and profitable agricultural areas, while internally and externally displacing millions and killing hundreds of thousands of the dispossessed. Corruption involving national, international governments, private enterprise rendered the theft of the assets meant for the development of the RSS. And, there were the ravages of nature yielding seasons of flooding or drought. .When Dr. Jok Madut Jok dedicated the Marol Primary School (MAPS) to the hope of laying the foundation of a national education system firmly based on a nationwide grass roots movement, he could not have predicted the hardships to be surmounted in rendering (MAPS) a model of the transformational promise of a coeducational school aimed at national, social, political, economic, and cultural progress. That a school system evolved despite the challenges before it, a testament to the transformational durability of a system rooted in local reality. The war itself had tested that durability as families fled from the oppression of Wau and surroundings to resettled at Marol, where their children were absorbed into MAPS and the more recently founded Marol Secondary School (MASS), which is funded and staffed by a separate European charity. But some facilities are shared. The absorption of refugee families have swelled the enrollments of both schools to the point that some classes are held outdoors again because in the last three years the need for infrastructural repairs has become acute..By 2019, MAPS has sent some 360 graduates to MASS, 100 of whom were drawn from other schools. We are awaiting notification of how current MASS graduates performed on university entrance exams. MAPS serves about 900 pupils totaling 1350 pupils in both schools. The primary mission of the Marol Academy is to fund the salaries of 19 full-time teachers and two part-timers at MAPS at a cost of 19,000 per year. In 2019, we granted a total of $33,700 that covered $19,000 in teacher salaries with the remainder going towards the start of construction on a three- classroom structure estimated to cost $36,000. To date, approximately $14,000 has been spent to buy materials and start construction. In addition to gifts we were able to raise for the construction, a European friend earmarked 9,000 for the construction. Clearly, we will need further gifts to finish the project and to replace the kitchen roof destroyed by high wind and repair damage to another classroom roof. We are actively seeking additional grants to complete these projects. .The true accomplishments of Professor Jok Madut Jok's efforts to should be measured in terms of the context in which he forged a true transformation of a local community through education. After 2013, when Marchar broke with Riek, and the nation descended into corrupt factional struggles to dominate.. When open war broke out in 2015, any semblance of an ethinically diverse successful national untity disappeared altogether. Now there is an uneasy peace agreement. Fortunately, Marol, with its natural disaster challenges has been of littel interest to either faction..In other words, it is remarkable that Marol and its schools survived at all, given all the adversities it had to surmount after 2013. Not only did it survive, but transformed itself into a cohesive culture of unity embracing diversity in the process. Land had been donated for the schools, and the community supported education even in times of drought or flood when crops failed by donating grain to the schools to feed students. The coeducational system led to greater equality for female residents. Child marriages are no longer arranged with young men selling their sisters to older men. Maternal and child death rates dropped as girls educated their elders to more sanitary meal preparation and the like. The community adopted and supported the results of the idea that Marol's schools for girls subsidizing them, while boys paid, provided that they adhered to egalitarian gender standards. .The true success of Marol was that these things occurred despite all odds against that eventuality..The Marol Academy Board of Directors is wholly committed to ensure further development in the future and will strive to find financial resources to that end. We are actively exploring all means available, including grants, expansion of the donor base and the possibility of the development of profit-making businesses to support the schools and the community. Our commitment is long-term.$33,700$33,700
