Mission and Program Overview

Mission

To Initiate and support primary education in rural Republic of South Sudan.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
The Marol Academy (referred to as "The Organization) is the major supporter of the Marol Academy Primary school (MAPS). Due to the instability surrounding the town of Wau 35 kilometers away, enrollments have surged to some 900 pupils as families fled to Marol village. From February to December 2017 through 2018, 18 teachers of varying qualifications taught grades one through eight for MAPS. Over-subscribed grades one and two had multiple streams, some of which had to assemble under trees due to classroom shortages. In 2018, The Organization granted MAPS $20,500: 19,000 for teacher salaries; $900 to help subsidize the education of the 45% of girls constituting MAPS' pupils; and $600 for feminine Hygiene kits for them. Three grants totaling $16,862 have been secured for year 2019 to mitigate the immediate challenges before us..Closely related to MAPS is the Marol Secondary School (MASS). Separately funded by other organizations, it too, has experienced significant growth due to the unrest in Wau. Its 400 students have produced three years of graduates who have done well on national exams and have moved on to higher education. While separately managed, MASS shares some common resources and curriculum with MAPS. Five teachers instruct in math, social studies, agricultural science, religious studies as well as English and Dinka Languages..Our Executive Director Dr. Jok Madut's goal of transforming local society through education of both boys and girls has borne fruit. Students are eager to learn and apply their learning. Some walk up to ten miles to school. Girls' lessons have improved public health as they teach their families simple hygiene. Hand washing, safe food cooking, handling and service have reduced illnesses. The delaying of marriage has lessened maternal and child death rates. And, education of boys has led to more egalitarian gender relations, for instance. Further, enthusiastic community and parental support has proven this coeducational grass roots approach to be an effective instrument of positive change..But the promise of a national education system has been undermined at the central level. Corruption and greed have consumed the world's fiscal contributions to the Republic of South Sudan. Power struggles have yielded predatory factional violence, disrupting public safety and economic viability wherever resources are concentrated, and undermining national infrastructure. While Marol remains calm, its transformative successes are threatened by the resultant triple digit inflation rates. Although the children in both schools continue to thrive academically, two critical factors belabor their work: the need to increase teacher salaries, and the completion of the buildings necessary to house their classes. The Organization is committed to sustaining current successes until better times. We are working hard to increase our donor base and to find the national grants for teacher and staff salaries as well as block grants for additional infrastructure.$20,500$20,500
