Mission and Program Overview

Mission

To Initiate and support primary education in rural Republic of South Sudan.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
The Marol Academy (referred to as the organization) is a major supporter of the primary level of Marol Academy School (referred to as The School) located in the Republic of South Sudan. The School enrolled a total of 900 pupils this past school year, beginning in February and ending in December 2016. The pupils are spread in Grades 1 through 8, with Grades 1 and 2 having multiple streams, as they are both over subscribed. This means 10 classes have to be taught, some of which are held under the trees. .This huge enrollment, increased from last year in part due to the instability in Wau, the nearest town to Marol Village35 kms awayfrom where a number of pupils who were going to school in Wau returned to the villages near to Marol. They enrolled both in in the Primary and Secondary levels of The School as this was an option for continuing their education. This enrollment is being managed and taught by 23 teachers (18 at the primary level) of varying levels of qualifications. They teach math, science, social studies (history, geography), agricultural science and religious studies, plus the languages, English and Dinka. In 2016, a grant of $24,000 was provided to cover teacher salaries at the primary level..Several testimonials have been recorded from local parents praising the existence of The School for providing their daughters and sons with the only access to education possible in this rural part of South Sudan..In spite of very difficult times in South Sudan, our Executive Director, Professor Jok Madut Jok, continues to be committed and buoyed by the enthusiasm of the youngsters eagerly attending school and by seeing the enormous difference those pupils are making in their home villages and communities because they are getting an education. The girls particularly are agents of change for hygienic and good public health practices. They instruct their family members about the necessity for hand-washing, particularly when handling food served to others; they encourage and offer suggestions on how to discuss with parents the benefits of girls delaying marriage and childbirth for their own health's sake and that of their future children; they have established a 'buddy system' for girls to ensure one another's security when walking distances to and from school..In the Republic of South Sudan where the excessively high inflation rate affects everyone, whether rural or urban, where there are terrible issues of security, an absence of a system of justice, almost no attention to infrastructure, and rampant violence, the School's education project is a place of hope and opportunity for the present and future where many pupils willingly walk great distances every day to study, learn, and thrive in a safe, out-of-the-way place with their committed teachers and their community of classmates. Executive director, Professor Jok Madut Jok of The Marol Academy, and his wife, Dr. Andrea Shaw, report the school's pupils are grateful to the many that support the School's education project as it provides the only opportunity they have to get an education.$24,000$24,000
