Education - building new hope runs several innovative educational programs in granada and nicaragua, and also provides high school and university enrollment support to the children of the coffee cooperative, el porvenir.quinta los chavalos (the kids place) is a supplemental school for about 100 children living in one of the poorest neighborhoods in granada. Here these elementary through middle school students are tutored in their school subjects to supplement the half-day program in the public schools, and prepare them for future education in high school and universities. Computers, physical activities and music are offered as well. Quinta students consistently perform at the top of their public school classes. Escuelita yo puedo (the little i can school) is a supplemental school in one of granadas poorest barrios where about 50 children discover an opportunity that eluded their parents: to learn to read, do math, play games, sing and to be a child. Middle school students also receive english classes, which has become increasingly important in nicaraguan public schools. School programming also incorporates activities to enrich the curriculum, including arts workshops, poetry workshops, field trips and cultural activities and performances. As a result of a special poetry program, escuelita children participated in creative writing workshops and were invited to participate for three years in granadas internationally renowned poetry festival. They have been the only school children invited to participate and read their own poems.high school scholarship program - it became clear in 2009 that the graduates of our two elementary schools were struggling after graduation because of poor quality high school education. So a high school scholarship program was begun, enabling needy students to attend a quality high school. Students are required to perform community service and maintain good grades. During 2016 there were about 30 students supported. Developmentthe coffee project - in 2002 when a precipitous drop in the world price of coffee broughtdevastation and starvation deaths to regions in nicaragua, building new hope formed a relationship with the 50 families of the worker-owned cooperative of el porvenir to assist them in marketing their product and to avoid foreclosure and loss of land. By working with many volunteers, bnh has been able to pay them more than the fair trade price for their product and also provide additional assistance, enabling them to secure their land and expand their school. During 2016, additional funds were also provided for the cooperative to repair their water tanks, which are essential to the communitys drinking water and to irrigation of crops, thus critical to their livelihood. Building new hope also provides an education fund for the community, which the members of the cooperative direct. These funds are used to provide access to high school education, which otherwise would not be available, and to support college education for youth from the community who are selected by the cooperative. Medical supplies were also provided to this remote community. Healthhealth work in 2016 was in three areas. (1) medication and basic medical supplies were provided to el porvenir rural community.(2) support for special health needs of our students and, at times, their families and our neighbors-in-need, such as rides to the hospital, emergency dental care or needed medications. (3) our support for the casa lupita veterinary clinic, which serves basic public health needs of an urban community regarding street animals and work animals. Other projects in nicaraguapuedo leer(i can read)program & library is granadas first and only lending library, with more than 770 members and 6,000 books, as well as multiple activities to encourage a love of reading. In addition, puedo leer has two reading rooms elsewhere in the city where children and parents can read and be read to. Several small libraries have been established in surro

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt4EDUCATION - BUILDING NEW HOPE RUNS SEVERAL INNOVATIVE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS IN GRANADA AND NICARAGUA, AND ALSO PROVIDES HIGH SCHOOL AND UNIVERSITY ENROLLMENT SUPPORT TO THE CHILDREN OF THE COFFEE COOPERATIVE, EL PORVENIR.QUINTA LOS CHAVALOS (THE KIDS PLACE) IS A SUPPLEMENTAL SCHOOL FOR ABOUT 100 CHILDREN LIVING IN ONE OF THE POOREST NEIGHBORHOODS IN GRANADA.
