Mission and Program Overview

Mission

We, the people of rhode island, associate ourselves for the purpose of providing a local forum and home for the arts, through the maintenance of residential and work studios, galleries, performance and educational spaces. Exhibitions and (continued on schedule o)performances in the forum will be unjuried, uncensored and open to the general public. Our facilities and services are made available to all artists who need a place to exhibit, perform, or create their original artwork, especially those who cannot obtain space to exhibit or perform from traditional sources because of financial or other limitations.

We envision a just & equitable world where all people can realize their full creative potential.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The form 990 is prepared by the executive director. The board has delegated the thorough review of the form 990 to the risk & finance committee. The risk & finance committee reviews the form 990 electronically. Once the committee is satisfied with the form, it is shared with the board of directors electronically; the board is asked if they have any questions or comments and any questions are reviewed. If no other changes are necessary, the form is then submitted to the irs.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

The organization's conflict of interest policy is provided to all officers, directors and key employees. Annually, these individuals are asked to review the policy and sign a statement indicating that they understand the policy, have reported all potential conflicts during the past year in accordance with the policy and will report all potential conflicts during the coming year. All potential conflicts are evaluated by the chair of the board of directors to determine if a conflict actually exists. In those instances where the potential transaction is a conflict, the board examines the transaction and a vote is taken (with those involved recusing themselves) as to whether the organization will enter into the transaction.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

As220 has an equal pay policy, under which all staff are compensated at the same rate of pay for their services. Compensation is determined in conjunction with the budgeting process. Annually, staff proposes a draft budget, which is reviewed in detail by the risk & finance committee. During this process, the committee discusses the proposed rate of compensation and any pay increases with staff. The committee considers comparable rates of compensation in the area and in similar organizations, and what is budgetarily possible. Once the committee is satisfied as to the proposed compensation, it makes a recommendation to the board of directors as part of the budget approval process. The board discusses any changes to the compensation rate and their budgetary impact, and approves a compensation rate for the staff. Any changes to compensation outside of the annual process are also recommended by the risk & finance committee and approved by the board.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

As220 makes its governing documents, conflict of interest policy and financial statements available to the public upon request.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc0AS220 INDUSTRIES IS A CROSS-DISCIPLINARY ARTS EDUCATION SPACE AND COMMUNITY STUDIO, COMPRISED OF A MEDIA ARTS LAB, FABRICATION LAB, PRINTSHOP AND COMMUNITY DARKROOM. IN ADDITION TO PROVIDING MEMBERS ACCESS TO PROFESSIONAL TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT FOR ARTISTIC PRODUCTION, AS220 INDUSTRIES HAS OFFERED EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOPS FROM BEGINNER TO ADVANCED LEVELS SINCE 2011. BY PROVIDING AFFORDABLE ACCESS TO STUDIO SPACE, TOOLS OF THE TRADE, AND VARIED TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES, AS220 INDUSTRIES HAS FOSTERED A DYNAMIC ENVIRONMENT FOR LEARNING AND MAKING, AS WELL AS SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT AND PRODUCTION. IN FISCAL YEAR 2021, MEMBERS WORKED COLLABORATIVELY TO SAFELY REOPEN THE STUDIO, AND PUBLIC ACCESS WAS LIMITED FOR MUCH OF THE YEAR. THE PROGRAM ALSO HSOTED PRINT-MAKING INITIATIVES THAT ELEVATED HEALTHCARE WORKERS, ESSENTIAL WORKERS, THE BLACK LIVES MATTER MOVEMENT AND GET OUT THE VOTE INITIATIVES.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc1OTHER PROGRAMS GENERALLY INCLUDE ORGANIZATION-WIDE PROGRAMMING SUCH AS AS220'S RACIAL JUSTICE INITIATIVE, PRACTICE//PRACTICE, PARTICIPATION IN THE CITY OF PROVIDENCE'S ANNUAL PVD FEST AND SUPPORTING AND INCUBATING SMALL AND FLEDGLING ARTS GROUPS AS THEY GROW INTO THEIR OWN NON-PROFITS. MANY OF THESE PROGRAMS WERE CURTAILED IN FISCAL YEAR 2021 DUE TO COVID-19, BUT AS220'S RACIAL JUSTICE INITIATIVE (RJI) GREW SIGNIFICANTLY INTO THE GUIDING LIGHT FOR ALL OF AS220'S WORK. 25 STAFF MEMBERS PARTICIPATED IN THE RJI, MEETING WEEKLY ALONG WITH A TEAM OF ARTIST-ORGANIZERS FROM THE COMMUNITY, TO WORK COLLABORATIVELY TOWARDS THE GOAL OF CO-CREATING AN ANTIRACIST AND LIBERATORY CULTURE AT AS220. THIS WORK IS ROOTED IN 12 DEMANDS LOVINGLY CRAFTED AND PUT FORTH BY AS220'S BIPOC STAFF, WHICH ARE NECESSARY FOR AS220 TO BECOME AN ANTIRACIST ORGANIZATION.
