Mission and Program Overview

Mission

We, the people of rhode island, associate ourselves for the purpose of providing a local forum and home for the arts, through the maintenance of residential and work studios, galleries, performance and educational spaces. Exhibitions and (continued on schedule o)performances in the forum will be unjuried, uncensored and open to the general public. Our facilities and services are made available to all artists who need a place to exhibit, perform, or create their original artwork, especially those who cannot obtain space to exhibit or perform from traditional sources because of financial or other limitations.

We envision a just world where all people can realize their full creative potential.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11

The form 990 is prepared by the managing director. The board has delegated the thorough review of the form 990 to the risk management committee. The risk management committee reviews the form 990 electronically. Once the risk management committee is satisfied with the form, it is shared with the board of directors electronically; the board is asked if they have any questions or comments and any questions are reviewed. If no other changes are necessary, the form is then submitted to the irs.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

The organization's conflict of interest policy is provided to all officers, directors and key employees. Annually, these individuals are asked to review the policy and sign a statement indicating that they understand the policy, have reported all potential conflicts during the past year in accordance with the policy and will report all potential conflicts during the coming year. All potential conflicts are evaluated by the chair of the board of directors to determine if a conflict actually exists. In those instances where the potential transaction is a conflict, the board examines the transaction and a vote is taken (with those involved recusing themselves) as to whether the organization will enter into the transaction.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

As220 has an equal pay policy, under which all staff are compensated at the same rate of pay for their services. Compensation is determined in conjunction with the budgeting process. Annually, staff proposes a draft budget, which is reviewed in detail by the risk management committee. During this process, the risk management committee discusses the proposed rate of compensation and any pay increases with staff. The risk management committee considers comparable rates of compensation in the area and in similar organizations. Once the risk management committee is satisfied as to the proposed compensation, it makes a recommendation to the board of directors as part of the budget approval process. The board discusses any changes to the compensation rate and their budgetary impact, and approves a compensation rate for the staff. Any changes to compensation outside of the annual process are also recommended by the risk management committee and approved by the board.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

As220 makes its governing documents, conflict of interest policy and financial statements available to the public upon request.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0AS220 YOUTH WORKS WITH YOUNG PEOPLE AGED 14-21 THROUGH 5 CREWS: APPAREL, DIGITAL MEDIA, MUSIC, PERFORMING ARTS AND VISUALS. AS220 YOUTH OPERATES OUT OF 3 PRIMARY LOCATIONS: THE DOWNTOWN YOUTH STUDIO IN OUR EMPIRE STREET COMPLEX; UCAP MIDDLE SCHOOL; AND THE RHODE ISLAND TRAINING SCHOOL, THE STATE'S JUVENILE DETENTION CENTER, WHERE WE HAVE BEEN WORKING FOR 20 YEARS. THIS EXPOSURE TO THE ARTS TAPS INTO AN OFTEN-OVERLOOKED CREATIVE POTENTIAL, OFFERING A POWERFUL ALTERNATIVE FOR THESE YOUNG PEOPLE. IN FISCAL YEAR 2016, AS220 YOUTH RAN 450 CLASSES AND SERVED 586 YOUNG PEOPLE. ZUKREWE, THE AS220 YOUTH PERFORMANCE GROUP, PERFORMED PUBLICLY 5 TIMES, THROUGHOUT THE REGION, FOR AUDIENCES OF APPROXIMATELY 1,100, IN ADDITION TO PERFORMING ON THE STAGE AT AS220'S FOO FEST FOR AN AUDIENCE OF APPROXIMATELY 5,000.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0LIVE/WORK: AS220 OWNS AND MANAGES THREE MIXED-USE BUILDINGS IN DOWNTOWN PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, TOTALING APPROXIMATELY 100,000 SQ FT. WE OFFER AFFORDABLE HOUSING AND STUDIO SPACE FOR OVER 60 ARTISTS ON THE UPPER FLOORS OF EACH OF OUR THREE DOWNTOWN BUILDINGS, INCLUDING 47 LIVE/WORK STUDIOS AND 9 WORK-ONLY STUDIOS. OUR TENANTS ARE ALSO (CONTINUED ON SCHEDULE O)PART OF THE CORE FOUNDATION OF THE AS220 COMMUNITY, HAVE ACCESS TO AS220 RESOURCES, AND HELP SUPPORT THE COMMUNITY THROUGH VOLUNTEER WORK.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc1PRACTICE//PRACTICE AND OTHER PROGRAMS: PRACTICE//PRACTICE IS AS220'S PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM FOR ARTS ADMINISTRATORS. FOR 30 YEARS, AS220 HAS BEEN A LIVING EXAMPLE OF INNOVATION IN NON-PROFIT ARTS PROGRAMMING, YOUTH PROGRAMMING, COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AND CREATIVE PLACEMAKING, AND HAS GROWN FROM A SMALL GRASSROOTS COLLECTIVE INTO A LARGE-SCALE ORGANIZATION THAT SERVES AS AN INTERNATIONAL MODEL. PRACTICE//PRACTICE USES WORKSHOPS, PRESENTATIONS, TOURS, DISCUSSIONS AND CONTRACTED CONSULTING TO SHARE THE AS220 POLICIES, PRACTICES, VALUES, AND MORE. THE FOCUS OF PRACTICE//PRACTICE IS A BI-ANNUAL 4-DAY RESIDENCY PROGRAM LAUNCHED IN FISCAL YEAR 2016, ATTENDED BY 35 LOCAL, NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS/MANAGERS. THE PROGRAM CONSULTED FOR 14 ARTS ORGANIZATIONS AND URBAN PLANNING CLIENTS, LED 27 GUIDED GROUP TOURS OF AS220 FOR 465 PEOPLE, AND PARTICIPATED IN 39 SPEAKING ENGAGEMENTS FOR AUDIENCES OF NEARLY 2,000 PEOPLE.OTHER PROGRAMS INCLUDE ORGANIZATION-WIDE PROGRAMMING SUCH AS AS220'S PARTICIPATION IN THE CITY OF PROVIDENCE'S 2ND ANNUAL PVD FEST AND SUPPORTING AND INCUBATING SMALL ARTS GROUPS AS THEY GROW INTO THEIR OWN NON-PROFITS.
