Mission and Program Overview

Mission

In all of our development and reconciliation activities, our aim is to equip and empower individuals, families and communities for positive social and economic transformation through reproducible initiatives that prioritize local participation, resources and cultural strengths. Our overarching goal is to empower individuals, families and communities to break the cycle of poverty and misunderstanding. Two key ways we do this are through building hope (helping people see there is a way out), and building trust (ensuring support for those seeking a better future).

Our ngo mission is to facilitate transformation and promote reconciliation throughout the communities of mauritania.

IRS990/Desc02013 WAS A YEAR OF REORGANIZATION FOR OUR URBAN DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS DUE TO PERSONNEL TURNOVER AND ALSO BASED ON A STRATEGIC DECISION TO REFOCUS OUR EFFORTS AND RESOURCES. AS A RESULT, URBAN DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES DECREASED SOMEWHAT FROM PRIOR YEARS. ACTIVITIES WILL INCREASE AGAIN IN 2014. WE CONTINUED COACHING AND FOLLOW-UP WORK WITH THE 67 BUSINESS TRAINEE GRADUATES FROM 2011 AND 2012. AS OF DECEMBER 2013, 79% OF THE TRAINEES WERE CONTINUING TO SUCCESSFULLY RUN A SMALL BUSINESS. IN PREPARATION FOR EXPANDING THE BUSINESS TRAINING PROGRAM IN 2014, WE HELD SEVERAL REFRESHER TRAINING EVENTS WITH OUR LOCAL TRAINERS, AND WORKED ON REVISING THE FRENCH AND ARABIC TRANSLATIONS OF THE TRAINING MANUALS. IN NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER 2013, WE ALSO SPONSORED SEVERAL TRAINING CONFERENCES IN COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT IN WHICH WE INTRODUCED PARTICIPANTS TO THE BUSINESS TRAINING COURSE AND WERE ABLE TO IDENTIFY SEVERAL DOZEN CANDIDATES FOR THE 2014 BUSINESS TRAINING COURSES. WE CONTINUED MANAGEMENT OF TWO CENTERS TO SUPPORT TALIBE BOYS (KORANIC STUDENTS SENT TO BEG ON THE STREETS) IN THE NEIGHBORHOODS OF SEBKHA AND TEYARETT IN NOUAKCHOTT. THE CENTERS PROVIDE REGULAR HOT MEALS, LITERACY TRAINING, VOCATIONAL TRAINING, AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR RECREATION AND SPORTS TO APPROXIMATELY 100 OF THE TALIBE BOYS IN NOUAKCHOTT. DOULOS ALSO PROVIDED SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIPS TO 26 OF THE OLDER BOYS. AS PART OF OUR STRATEGIC REORGANIZATION, DOULOS ENDED OUR SUPPORT FOR THIS PROGRAM AT THE END OF 2013. WE ARE ALSO RUNNING A NUTRITIONAL REHABILITATION PROGRAM IN THE SA'ADA NEIGHBORHOOD OF NOUAKCHOTT, A VERY POOR AREA OF THE CITY WITH A POPULATION OF ABOUT 24,000. IN 2013, THIS PROGRAM PROVIDED INTENSIVE NUTRITIONAL TRAINING AND MEDICAL SUPPORT TO APPROXIMATELY 190 FAMILIES WITH MALNOURISHED CHILDREN. THE PROGRAM CONDUCTED NUTRITION SCREENINGS FOR MORE THAN 1,000 CHILDREN THROUGHOUT THE COMMUNITY OVER THE COURSE OF THE YEAR. WE PROVIDED A WEEK OF TRAINING PROGRAM FOR 15 COMMUNITY HEALTH VOLUNTEERS IN OCTOBER 2013. THESE VOLUNTEERS CONDUCT HOME VISITS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD TO OFFER BASIC NUTRITIONAL TEACHING AND TRAINING REGARDING THE IMPORTANCE OF GOOD HYGIENE IN PREVENTING DISEASE. WE CONDUCTED AN EVALUATION IN TWO ZONES OF THE SA'ADA NEIGHBORHOOD IN SEPTEMBER 2013, AND WERE GREATLY ENCOURAGED TO FIND THAT MALNUTRITION HAS DECREASED FROM AN AVERAGE OF 23% TO A RATE OF 11% AMONG PRE-SCHOOL CHILDREN IN THE NEIGHBORHOODS WHERE WE FOCUSED OUR EFFORTS IN 2012 AND EARLY 2013.
