Mission and Program Overview

Mission

In all of our development and reconciliation activities, our aim is to equip and empower individuals, families and communities for positive social and economic transformation through reproducible initiatives that prioritize local participation, resources and cultural strengths. Our overarching goal is to empower individuals, families and communities to break the cycle of poverty and misunderstanding. Two key ways we do this are through building hope (helping people see there is a way out), and building trust (ensuring support for those seeking a better future).

Our overarching goal is to empower individuals, families and communities to break the cycle of poverty. Two key ways we do this are through building hope (helping people see there is a way out) and building trust (ensuring support for those seeking a better future). There are a number of key principles that undergird and shape our development work. Building local capacity: we focus on training people and building leaders for the future. Encouraging responsibility and ingenuity: individuals trapped in poverty may not always see a way out of their problems. We help people identify available resources and look for solutions. Forging community partnerships: doulos personnel live in the communities where we serve and work closely with local community groups, leaders, and entrepreneurs. Maximizing local resources: in development-speak this is often called "asset-based community development." we focus on identifying community strengths and resources that can be developed and multiplie

IRS990/Desc0WE FOCUSED OUR URBAN DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES IN 2014 ON TWO PRIMARY PROGRAMS: (1) TRAINING FOR TRANSFORMATION. BUSINESS START-UP TRAINING--THE DYNAMIC BUSINESS START-UP PROJECT (DBSP): DBSP IS A FOUR-WEEK PRACTICAL BUSINESS TRAINING COURSE, DESIGNED TO EQUIP ENTREPRENEURS AND PROMOTE SELF-SUFFICIENCY. EACH FOUR-WEEK CLASS IS FOLLOWED BY 12 MONTHS OF STRUCTURED ONE-ON-ONE FOLLOW-UP AND COACHING OF EACH TRAINEE. ONE KEY DISTINCTIVE OF DBSP IS THAT IT TEACHES PEOPLE TO START BUSINESSES WITH $7 OF THEIR OWN MONEY. IN 2014, DOULOS OFFERED 4 BUSINESS TRAINING CLASSES IN FRENCH AND ARABIC TO 49 MEN AND WOMEN IN NOUAKCHOTT. WE ALSO CONTINUED TO COACH AND FOLLOW UP THE 67 BUSINESS TRAINING GRADUATES FROM 2011-2013. WE ESTIMATE THE PROGRAM INDIRECTLY BENEFITTED AT LEAST 250 FAMILY MEMBERS AND FRIENDS OF THE TRAINING PARTICIPANTS AS THEY SHARED WHAT THEY LEARNED WITH OTHERS, AND/OR WERE BETTER ABLE TO PROVIDE FOR THEIR FAMILY THROUGH THE BUSINESS SKILLS GAINED ON THE DBSP COURSE. WORLDVIEW TRAINING: THE WORLDVIEW TRAINING COURSES OFFERED BY DOULOS HAVE THE GOAL OF BREAKING ATTITUDES OF FATALISM, PASSIVITY AND DEPENDENCY. THE COURSES ARE DESIGNED TO STIR UP PEOPLE'S HOPE AND THEIR CONFIDENCE THAT THEY CAN TAKE INITIATIVE TO CHANGE THEIR LIVES AND CIRCUMSTANCES, FOCUSING ON THE THEMES OF STEWARDSHIP AND FRUITFULNESS. SOME OF THE SPECIFIC TRAINING COURSES WHICH WE USE AS PART OF OUR WORLDVIEW TRAINING INCLUDE: "CROSSROADS;" "SEEDS FOR SUSTAINABLE CHANGE" (SSC); AND "HOLISTIC INTEGRATED SUSTAINABLE TRANSFORMATION" (HIST). IN 2014, DOULOS ORGANIZED A 4 DAY WORLDVIEW CONFERENCE FOCUSED ON THE HIST AND SSC CURRICULUMS FOR 70 PARTICIPANTS, HELD IN NOUAKCHOTT IN MAY 2014. WE ALSO LAUNCHED OUR CROSSROADS TRAINING PROGRAM. DOULOS FIRST OFFERED A SHORT PORTION OF THE CROSSROADS COURSE AS PART OF OUR FIRST WORLDVIEW TRAINING CONFERENCE IN JANUARY 2011. IT WAS VERY ENTHUSIASTICALLY RECEIVED AND WE WERE EXCITED TO BE ABLE INVITE THE COURSE'S CREATOR, VICTORIA BELL JEFFS AND HER HUSBAND GRAHAM BACK TO MAURITANIA IN OCTOBER 2014. THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER AND EARLY FALL WE PREPARED TO LAUNCH THE PROGRAM, TRANSLATING THE TWO 200+ PAGE STUDENTS' AND TRAINERS' MANUALS INTO BOTH FRENCH AND ARABIC. IN OCTOBER 2014, VICTORIA AND GRAHAM RAN A TRAIN THE TRAINERS WORKSHOP FOR 8 DAYS, AND THEN, ALONG WITH THE 8 LOCAL TRAINERS THEY HAD JUST TRAINED, THEY PRESENTED THE FULL CROSSROADS COURSE AT WEEKLONG CONFERENCE FOR 60 MEN AND WOMEN FROM THROUGHOUT NOUAKCHOTT. IN ADDITION TO THOSE WHO DIRECTLY PARTICIPATED IN THESE TRAINING WORKSHOPS AND CONFERENCES, WE ESTIMATE THAT THERE WERE OVER 500 INDIRECT BENEFICIARIES OF THESE TRAINING EVENTS AS THE ATTENDEES SHARED WHAT THEY LEARNED WITH FAMILY, FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES. HOWEVER, IT IS DIFFICULT TO ACCURATELY ESTIMATE INDIRECT BENEFICIARIES, SINCE A NUMBER OF THE RECENT TRAINEES ARE ACTIVE IN RUNNING LOCAL NGOS. FOLLOWING THE TRAINING, THEIR NGOS HAVE ORGANIZED VARIOUS COMMUNITY EVENTS. SO WE ARE EXTREMELY CONFIDENT THAT THESE TRAINING PROGRAMS HAVE A MUCH GREATER "MULTIPLICATION EFFECT" THAN WHAT WE CAN DIRECTLY MEASURE! (2) SA'ADA COMMUNITY NUTRITION PROGRAM. DOULOS CONTINUED RUNNING A NUTRITIONAL REHABILITATION PROGRAM IN THE SA'ADA NEIGHBORHOOD OF NOUAKCHOTT, A VERY POOR AREA OF THE CITY WITH A POPULATION OF ABOUT 24,000. THE SA'ADA NUTRITION PROJECT FOCUSES ON BRINGING NUTRITIONAL REHABILITATION PROGRAMS AND HEALTH EDUCATION INTO WOMEN'S HOMES, SHOWING FAMILIES HOW THEY CAN IMPROVE THE NUTRITION AND HEALTH OF THEIR CHILDREN USING LOCALLY AVAILABLE INGREDIENTS AND RESOURCES. IN 2014, THIS PROGRAM PROVIDED INTENSIVE NUTRITIONAL TRAINING AND MEDICAL SUPPORT TO APPROXIMATELY 220 MALNOURISHED CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES. THE PROGRAM STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS CONDUCTED NUTRITION SCREENINGS FOR AT LEAST 600 OTHER CHILDREN THROUGHOUT THE COMMUNITY OVER THE COURSE OF THE YEAR. WE PROVIDED ONGOING TRAINING FOR 15 COMMUNITY HEALTH VOLUNTEERS INITIALLY TRAINED IN OCTOBER 2013. THESE VOLUNTEERS CONDUCTED HOME VISITS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD TO OF
