Mission and Program Overview

Mission

In all of our development and reconciliation activities, our aim is to equip and empower individuals, families and communities for positive social and economic transformation through reproducible initiatives that prioritize local participation, resources and cultural strengths. Our overarching goal is to empower individuals, families and communities to break the cycle of poverty and misunderstanding. Two key ways we do this are through building hope (helping people see there is a way out), and building trust (ensuring support for those seeking a better future).

INTERFAITH DIALOGUE PROGRAMS AND RESEARCH: IN 2022, DOULOS CONTINUED OUR WORK IN PROMOTING MUSLIM-CHRISTIAN AND MUSLIM-CHRISTIAN-JEWISH UNDERSTANDING AND RECONCILIATION IN VARIOUS NATIONS AROUND THE WORLD. AS THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC BEGAN TO WIND DOWN, IN-PERSON MEETINGS BECAME POSSIBLE AGAIN IN LATE 2022. IN LATE 2022 WE MADE SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS IN OUR WORK ON DEVELOPING A POTENTIAL PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN AL-AZHAR UNIVERSITY IN CAIRO AND FULLER THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY. WE ALSO BEGAN DIALOGUE WITH MUSLIM COMMUNITIES IN DEARBORN, MICHIGAN, AS JOSEPH AND MICHELE CUMMING MOVED FROM BEING BASED AT YALE UNIVERSITY TO BEING BASED HALF THE YEAR IN CAIRO, EGYPT AT AL-AZHAR, AND HALF THE YEAR IN DEARBORN. WE CONTINUED OUR ONGOING, BEHIND-THE-SCENES WORK WITH MUSLIM, CHRISTIAN AND JEWISH LEADERS AROUND THE WORLD, SPEAKING AT CHRISTIAN CONFERENCES ON ISLAM (INCLUDING ONE LARGE CONFERENCE IN THE MIDDLE EAST), AND SCHOLARLY RESEARCH AND PUBLICATION IN SUPPORT OF THESE EFFORTS. IN OUR 2021 REPORT WE MENTIONED A BOOK MANUSCRIPT WE HAD COMPLETED ON THE HISTORY OF CHRISTIAN INTERCULTURAL ENGAGEMENT. WE DID FURTHER EDITING OF THIS MANUSCRIPT IN 2022, AND THIS BOOK IS NOW CONTRACTED WITH A PUBLISHING HOUSE FOR PUBLICATION IN 2023. IN 2022, WE BEGAN RESEARCH FOR A BOOK ON THE ROLE PLAYED BY HOSPITALITY (GIVING AND RECEIVING) IN BREAKING DOWN BARRIERS BETWEEN MUSLIMS AND CHRISTIANS.$0$39,502
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS: IN 2022, DOULOS CONTINUED OUR COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS IN THE ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF MAURITANIA. THESE PROGRAMS HAVE REMAINED SMALL IN SCALE, DUE TO FACTORS OUTLINED IN OUR REPORT OF 2016. PROGRAMS CONTINUING FROM 2017 AND INTO 2022 INCLUDE SUPPORT FOR A SCHOOL IN AN UNDER-SERVED COMMUNITY, PROVIDING EXPERT ADVICE TO INDIGENOUS MAURITANIAN NGOS, COORDINATION OF SOME SMALL SCALE HUMANITARIAN AID, AND OTHER SMALL PROJECTS IN RURAL VILLAGES. IN 2022 WE CONTINUED OVERSIGHT OF THE MICROENTERPRISE/JOB-CREATION PROJECT BEGUN IN 2020. THE SMALL BUSINESS THAT CREATED 3 JOBS IN DECEMBER 2021 CONTINUED TO BE STABLE WITH MODEST GROWTH THROUGHOUT 2022, AND THE OWNER OF THAT BUSINESS BEGAN REPAYING HIS LOAN IN 2022. THIS HAS ENABLED US TO CONSIDER PROPOSALS FOR TWO OTHER SMALL BUSINESSES WE HOPE TO BE ABLE SUPPORT IN 2023.$0$9,875
