Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 8B

The Organization has no committees with the authority to act on behalf of its governing body.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11B

A draft copy of the Form 990 is emailed to board members prior to a board meeting. At the board meeting the form is reviewed and any questions that the board has are addressed by the Finance Officer or the Certified Public Accountant who prepares the form. Once the form has been approved by the board, it is filed with the IRS.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12C

Copies of the Conflict of Interest Policy are distributed to board members at the January meeting. The policy is reviewed by the Operations Officer at the meeting. The board members then complete the form and return it to the Operations Officer. Copies of the policy are also distributed to staff members each December. The staff is asked to review and complete the form. In addition, a copy of the policy is given to and reviewed with new staff members before they begin work. Any changes to the Conflict of Interest Policy would be reviewed and approved by the board and presented to staff at the following monthly staff meeting.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15A

The board of trustees meets in closed session to review and discuss the Executive Director's annual performance and compensation. The discussion is based, in part, on the Executive Director's compensation as compared to directors of other local organizations. The board obtains information periodically from a third party/outside source on compensation paid to executive directors of other similarly sized not-for-profit organizations in the community. After the discussion, recommendations are made and voted on by the board members. Minutes of the meeting are taken by the Secretary of the board and, at the following meeting, are approved by the board. There are no other officers or key employees of the Organization.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19

A packet of documents including the Conflict of Interest Policy and the past three years' Financial Statements and 990s are kept on file and available to anyone requesting a copy. The Organization's website notifies any interested party of their availability.

Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part XII, Line 2C:

The Organization has a finance committee who is reponsible for oversight of the audit and selection of the independent auditor. This process is unchanged from last year.

Financial Statement Notes

Part V, Line 4:

The Organization's board designated endowment fund is designated to be used solely to support the operation and programs of the Organization.

Part X, Line 2:

The Organization's federal exempt and unrelated business income returns are subject to examination by the IRS, generally for three years after they were filed. The Organization's state informational returns are subject to examination up to four years after they were filed. The statute of limitations does not apply to unfiled returns. The Organization believes that all required returns have been filed. In the event it would be required, the Organization would recognize interest accrued related to unrecognized tax benefits in interest expense and penalties in operating expenses. The Organization has not recognized any amounts for interest and penalties accrued at December 31, 2016.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Crisis Intervention for Child Victims of Sexual Abuse - The only counseling program of its kind in Mercer County, the program has, since 1987, helped more than 5,000 children recover from with the trauma of sexual abuse. The Mercer County Prosecutor's Office refers 100% of reported child victims of sexual abuse in the county (approximately 200 children each year) to PEI Kids. Since child sexual abuse adversely affects the entire family, therapeutic components of the program include one-on-one counseling for the child victim and support groups for child victims and supporting family members. PEI Kids also helps prepare victims for court appearances, which can be especially traumatic, and provides transportation as needed. PEI Kids charges no fees to program clients or their families.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0Prevention Education Workshops - PEI Kids' school-based primary prevention workshops teach and reinforce personal safety concepts to pre-school through eighth grade students, school staff and parents through interactive and engaging, age-appropriate formats. As the NJ Child Assault Prevention designee for Mercer County for 32 years, PEI Kids is well known throughout the area's public, private, and charter schools. Each year, its workshops reach more than 10,000 children in over 60 Mercer County schools. Working with Prevent Child Abuse NJ, PEI Kids is also the lead agency of the Greater Mercer Coalition to Prevent Child Sexual Abuse. The coalition seeks to educate adults who work and/or lives in Mercer County by providing free community workshops on how to prevent child sexual abuse.
