FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

Kidspirit is a nonprofit online magazine and community by and for youth to engage each other about life's big questions in an open and inclusive spirit. Its mission is to promote mutual understanding among 11- to 17- year-olds of diverse backgrounds and support their development into world citizens with strong inner grounding. Since 2008, kidspirit's unique process has empowered teens through creative expression and youth-led collaboration to raise their voices about questions that go to the heart of life. The organization is led by an all- youth network of editors around the world who edit submissions collaboratively, decide on the magazine's quarterly themes, set the editorial agenda, and discuss ethical, philosophical, and spiritual topics. Ad-free and unaffiliated, kidspirit provides a critical outlet for teenagers everywhere to discover and highlight the essential humanity transcending divergent points of view. The magazine is in syndication on the huffington post and spirituality & practice and has won numerous awards from major educational, parenting, and spiritual organizations. Kidspirit aims to build a truly inclusive and welcoming conversation that emphasizes authenticity, personal growth, and engagement. All online issues of kidspirit are available free of charge, and anyone between the ages of 11 and 17 is invited to contribute or to join an editorial board. The organization also provides free group guides corresponding to each of its issues, an incredible resource for teachers, parents, or anyone hoping to spark youth-driven conversations.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

Kidspirit celebrated its 13th year in print in 2020, and its network of young editors grew to include about 150 teenagers on 19 editorial boards in new york, california, kentucky, navajoland, ohio, texas, tennessee, australia, bosnia and herzegovina, china, haiti, india, nepal, pakistan, paraguay, taiwan, and ukraine. Through their writing, art, video, and conversations, youth substantively engaged with the 2020 themes: nature, fun and creativity, strength and influence, and silence. In 2020, kidspirit received a grant from the collegiate church corporation for operating support as well as to continue expanding its satellite ed boards in pakistan. The initiative in pakistan continues to grow. Twenty-six editors were selected by their peers on editorial boards to receive kidspirit awards this past year. Award winners were recognized at the 2020 kidspirit awards, a virtual event that celebrated the kidspirit community with attendees from all over the globe. During the event, winners accepted their awards and read excerpts from their award-winning pieces, and prominent community members spoke about the power of kidspirit's mission and programming. Kidspirit also launched the best of kidspirit, volume vii, a book featuring artwork, articles, and poems written by 2020 award winners, as well as additional pieces that most reflect kidspirit's mission. In conjunction with the 2020 kidspirit awards, the organization held its second annual global summit. During the full day event, "from inquiry to understanding," kidspirit youth gathered virtually to engage each other on the themes of "big questions- and "belonging." through thoughtful discussion in large and small groups, kidspirit contributors engaged deeply about topics that mattered to them. Conversations were facilitated by two accomplished adults: emily esfahani smith, author of the bestselling book the power of meaning, and lewis dabney, executive director of the key bridge foundation. This year, kidspirit has continued to grow. Its youth network has expanded by over 35%, with a total of 19 editorial boards around the country and abroad. Kidspirit has also been able to continue building its programming opportunities by expanding its online workshops program, which has been an important resource for kids during the pandemic. Kidspirit now offers three distinct workshop experiences: kidspirit connect, editing workshops, and the belonging project. During kidspirit connect dialogue sessions, participants explore topics important to them through discussions around kidspirit's archive of youth-written articles on big questions. The editing workshops provide an opportunity for teens to collaboratively discuss and prepare articles submitted to the magazine. Finally, the belonging project brings together kids from different racial and ethnic backgrounds to co- create multimedia projects over three months. This initiative forges paths of connection around issues of equity and inclusion. Kidspirit significantly increased its web traffic through its online marketing efforts, growing its annual readership to 250,000 people, a 233% increase from last year. Kidspirit is also syndicated on spirituality & practice, a platform that creates and curates meaningful content for hundreds of thousands of readers, on the blog kidspirit youth voices.
