Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The initiative for global development (igd) is a non-profit organization that drives poverty reduction by catalyzing business growth and investment in the developing world. We bring together an influential network of senior executives from sector-leading companies with the interest and capacity to make strategic investments in high-need, high-potential areas of africa. Members of our frontier leaders network shape global connections and frontier market insights, and promote business-driven development to create economic growth and opportunity.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Development partnersoverview: this was an important year in the evolution of igd's work with the u.s. Government and our efforts to improve u.s. Development policy. We delivered a series of successful advocacy efforts and events in the first half of the year including circulating a leadership council letter to congress on adequate funding for foreign assistance, organizing a power sector-focused event with the mcc featuring frontier 100 member company symbion, working with the administration to connect interested companies to "feed the future" and "partnership for growth", and engaging with modernized foreign assistance network and the new consensus for development reform on congressional outreach focused on private sector-led development. The major development of the year, however, was the creation of the new membership group, igd development partners, which was launched in september. The goal of development partners is to provide value to member companies and to advance private sector-led development by:- facilitating business engagement and investment in key development sectors, both in conjunction with the frontier 100 and with u.s. Government development initiatives;- improving private sector-focused u.s. Global development programs and tools in order to promote sustained economic growth and attract business investment;- serving as a forum for companies to share knowledge about partnering for development and investing with social impact.a dozen or more multinational companies have expressed interest in joining development partners and we are in the process of organizing three distinct efforts in which companies can engage: 1) creating specific business recommendations on private sector-led development, 2) promoting energy investments in africa, and 3) promoting agricultural investments in africa. The two sectoral efforts will provide opportunities to work in conjunction with interested frontier 100 companies as well as with u.s. Government initiatives that are targeted at attracting business investment to africa. This will be the foundation of our work in 2012.
Activity 3
Recruitmentoverview: our strategy in 2011 was to deepen our engagement with current member companies and recruit new, targeted companies through participation in frontier 100 or development partners. The leadership council became a way to recognize ceos of u.s. Companies as an elevated body for top donors. Igd targeted our recruitment to companies operating or wanting to expand in africa with an emphasis to secure more u.s. Companies participating in frontier 100. Development partners was also launched in 2011 to formalize our relationship with companies interested in leveraging resources of the u.s. Government. To date, igd has recruited 22 companies, meeting our annual goal of 22 for the year with the expectation of adding 5-8 more by year-end. Our networks now total 69 companies participating in frontier 100 (28 u.s. And european, 34 african and 7 south asian), 32 companies on the leadership council (24 current ceos, 8 former) and 12 companies expressing strong interest in development partners (with the goal to convert 5-8 to join by the end of the year.)

THE MAJOR DEVELOPMENT OF THE YEAR, HOWEVER, WAS THE CREATION OF THE NEW MEMBERSHIP GROUP, IGD DEVELOPMENT PARTNERS, WHICH WAS LAUNCHED IN SEPTEMBER.
