Activity 2

Policy:on the policy front, real progress was made on a number of igd's priorities, especially elevating global development as a key element of u.s. Foreign policy and improving the management and effectiveness of u.s. Development programs. The new global development policy announced by president obama at the u.n. Meeting on the millennium development goals included several reforms that igd and our modernizing foreign assistance network colleagues have been actively supporting: - formulation of a global development strategy. - making broad-based economic growth a cornerstone of u.s. Development efforts, - creating an interagency policy committee to coordinate the development activities of all u.s. Government agencies.given the midterm elections and the difficulty in advancing legislation during a compressed and highly politicized congressional session, the main focus in 2010 was on the obama administration and on laying a foundation for legislative reforms in 2011, including a rewrite of the foreign assistance act (a partial draft of which was released by chairman berman in the house) and reform of u.s. Trade preferences programs.policy lessons learned:- the business perspective on development is valuable (business case for foreign aid reform is good example), well received, and effective in engaging house republicans on subject of aid reform.- more content is needed, especially since ceo time is limited. In 2011 we will look to expand our publications and other policy statements that bring the business voice to the policy agenda since ceo-level meetings and events are more difficult to coordinate.- a sectoral approach can complement and reinforce broader agenda (our ag work is an example), has helped us attract new companies and create opportunities to provide targeted policy recommendations, while also reinforcing igds positions on improving u.s. Foreign assistance and creating a platform for coordinating policy work with frontier 100 engagement.

Activity 3

Aginvest: igd's emerging agricultural development strategy which we are calling aginvest is a project that cuts across both policy and f100. Aginvest will add a business perspective to the obama administrations feed the future initiative and promote deal facilitation through frontier 100 in the agricultural sector. Over the past year, igd has held conversations with companies such as kraft, land o'lakes, deere, cargill, costco, unilever, bunge and monsanto, which have helped to define a value-added role for igd. In 2010, igd also formed a number of key collaborations to enhance rather than duplicate existing efforts, most notably, a formal collaboration with the hewlett foundation program called transfarm africa. The objective of aginvest is to advance public and private investment in african agriculture through policy change and business action.
