Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

Batonga hires an independent accounting firm to prepare the federal form 990. Upon submission of the draft, the form 990 is reviewed by the executive director. A copy of the final draft is distributed to the full board of directors before filing with the internal revenue service.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

The board of directors reviews the conflict of interest policy on an annual basis. Potential conflicts of interest are also regularly monitored. Should a conflict exist, board members recuse themselves and do not participate in discussions with other board members, vote on the issues, or otherwise influence the decision-making process related to the matter.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

Batonga makes its governing documents, conflict of interest policy and financial statements available to the public upon request.

IRS990/Desc0IN 2016, THE BATONGA FOUNDATION PROVIDED STRONG AND COHERENT LEADERSHIP WHILE WORKING TO ADVANCE EDUCATIONAL AND ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUNG WOMEN AND GIRLS IN AFRICA. WE CAREFULLY ADDRESSED UNANTICIPATED CHALLENGES, APPLIED LESSONS LEARNED AND GREW WITH INTENT. THROUGH OUR ACTIVITIES, WE MAXIMIZED THE IMPACT OF OUR RESOURCES IN 2016 AND BUILT A STRONG FOUNDATION FOR 2017.BATONGA TRULY WENT 'BEYOND THE PAVED ROAD' IN 2016 TO DELIVER INTENTIONALLY DESIGNED PROGRAMS TAILORED TO MEET THE UNIQUE NEEDS OF THE MOST VULNERABLE AND OFF-TRACK YOUNG WOMEN AND GIRLS IN BENIN. USING THE GIRL ROSTER , A DIGITAL SURVEY AND MAPPING TOOL, WE GATHERED INFORMATION AND GAINED INSIGHT INTO COMPLEX ISSUES THAT AFFECT THE LIVELIHOODS OF YOUNG WOMEN AND GIRLS, ALLOWING BATONGA AND OUR PARTNERS TO DESIGN AND IMPLEMENT MORE SUCCESSFUL AND TARGETED PROGRAMS. THE DATA WE COLLECTED AND OUR SUBSEQUENT EXPERIENCE WORKING WITH EXCLUDED GIRLS FOSTERED A RICHER UNDERSTANDING OF THE BARRIERS TO EDUCATION AND ECONOMIC PROSPERITY THAT GIRLS FACE IN BENIN AND FRANCOPHONE WEST AFRICA. IDENTIFYING AND RECRUITING EXCLUDED YOUNG WOMEN AND GIRLS FOR GIRLS CLUBSIN 2016, BATONGA IDENTIFIED 2,115 OF THE MOST VULNERABLE/OFF-TRACK GIRLS IN 21 VILLAGES IN BENIN, SUCCESSFULLY RECRUITED 77% OF THE GIRLS IDENTIFIED INTO OUR GIRLS CLUBS, AND DELIVERED A CONTEXTUALIZED FINANCIAL LITERACY AND LIFE SKILLS CURRICULUM THAT HAS INCREASED GIRLS' SOCIAL, COGNITIVE AND PERSONAL ASSETS. OF THE 1,629 GIRLS WE RECRUITED TO OUR CLUBS IN 2016, 418 WERE MARRIED, 784 WERE OUT OF SCHOOL, 500 ALREADY HAD CHILDREN, AND 163 WERE NOT LIVING WITH EITHER PARENT. THESE GIRLS ACTIVELY PARTICIPATED IN THE DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF THEIR CLUBS: EACH CLUB SELECTED A PRESIDENT, SECRETARY, TREASURER, AND VICE TREASURER THROUGH DEMOCRATIC ELECTIONS. MOREOVER, EACH INDIVIDUAL CLUB DESIGNED AND DEVELOPED A UNIQUE BUSINESS PLAN UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF THEIR MENTOR AND 100% OF THE GIRLS BECAME ACTIVELY ENGAGED IN INCOME-GENERATING, ENTREPRENEURIAL ACTIVITIES, SUCH AS SELLING SOAPS, CAKES, AND HANDICRAFTS. OUR CLUBS HAD A COMPLETION RATE OF 90%, WITH 97.6% OF GIRLS REPORTING THAT THEIR FUTURE PROSPECTS HAVE IMPROVED, 94.3% REPORTING INCREASES IN COGNITIVE SKILLS (E.G., LITERACY, NUMERACY, AND/OR FINANCIAL LITERACY), 99% REPORTING INCREASED ACCESS TO PEER NETWORKS AND SOCIAL SAFETY AND 100% CONNECTED WITH SKILLS/TRAINING/SUPPORT FOR SUSTAINABLE INCOME-GENERATING ACTIVITIES. ONE BENEFICIARY IN SAVALOU TOLD US, "HERE, I AM ABLE TO TALK ABOUT THINGS AND GET INFORMATION THAT I CANNOT FIND AT HOME. HERE, I CAN PREPARE FOR THE FUTURE AND BECOME THE PERSON I WANT TO BE." ANOTHER GIRL IN AZONKANGOUDO SHARED, "PARTICIPATION IN THE CLUBS MEANS THAT PEOPLE LOOK AT US DIFFERENTLY IN THE COMMUNITY. WE ARE GIVEN MORE VALUE."THE VALUE OF IDENTIFYING THE MOST OFF-TRACK SUBSETS OF GIRLS HAS BEEN TWO-FOLD: IT HAS ALLOWED BATONGA AND OTHER ORGANIZATIONS WORKING IN THESE COMMUNITIES TO BETTER UNDERSTAND GIRLS' NEEDS, AND IT HAS ALLOWED US TO "COUNT" THEM, IN MANY INSTANCES FOR THE FIRST TIME. IN DOING SO, WE CAN MAKE THESE FORMERLY "INVISIBLE" GIRLS ELIGIBLE FOR AND AWARE OF SERVICES AND FACILITIES AVAILABLE TO THEM, SUCH AS OUR GIRLS CLUBS. PROVIDING SOCIAL AND FINANCIAL LITERACY EDUCATIONIN PARTNERSHIP WITH AFLATOUN INTERNATIONAL, BATONGA CONTEXTUALIZED A NEW CURRICULUM ON FINANCIAL LITERACY AND LIFE SKILLS FOR GIRLS IN BENIN IN 2016. "FOUNDATIONAL SOCIAL AND FINANCIAL SKILLS FOR BENIN'S FUTURE LEADERS" FOCUSES ON FIVE CORE ELEMENTS: 1) PERSONAL EXPLORATION AND SELF-ESTEEM, 2) RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES 3) SAVINGS, EXPENSES, AND USING RESOURCES RESPONSIBLY, 4) PLANNING AND BUDGETING AND 5) SOCIAL ENTERPRISE AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP. TO ACCOMPANY THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THIS CURRICULUM, AFLATOUN CONDUCTED A WEEKLONG TRAINING IN 2016 FOR 30 PARTICIPANTS IN BOHICON (24 MENTORS FROM THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES, THE PROJECT MANAGERS AND THE MAIN TRAINERS WHO MONITOR THE PROGRESS OF THE PROJECT). THROUGH OUR FINANCIAL LITERACY CURRICULUM, GIR
