| IRS990/Desc | 0 | In 2014, the Batonga Foundation supported programs, advocacy efforts, and capacity-building activities consistent with our mission, in order to maximize the impact of our resources. The Batonga Foundation has forged numerous strategic partnerships among diverse organizations, corporations, and government entities, managed multiple programs and advocacy campaigns focused on the advancement of gender equality in secondary school education, and demonstrated the ability to develop innovative solutions to the barriers girls face in receiving an education. ProgramsBatonga has provided consistent feedback and advisory support to our NGO partners in Africa and have worked closely with them to ensure that our efforts are effectively advancing gender equality in schools and supporting womens empowerment at the regional and national levels. Reviewing proposals and budgets, monitoring programs, tracking results, and identifying areas of challenge and opportunity are integral to our work. To date, Batonga has been able to provide 5,070 years of secondary and higher education for girls in Africa. This past year, the Batonga Foundation has just provided access to water wells and latrines for 5,106 secondary school students and their communities in Bembereke, Benin and distributed over 100,000 pairs of shoes for students and their community members. We are not only providing access to education, but we are also equipping girls with the tools they need to succeed and we are shifting views regarding the importance of girls education and advanced gender equality in schools. Forging strategic partnerships with a multitude of new organizations, corporations, and government offices and seeking innovative ways to promote gender equality have been critical parts of our work in 2014 to advance educational opportunities for women and girls in Africa. This year, we announced our newest partnership with USAID. Along with USAIDs mission in Benin and our local NGO partners, we embarked on a unique 3-year program that will allow us to reach 100 of the most deserving yet vulnerable girls in the country and equip them with the tools they need to create a better future for themselves and their communities.In 2014, the Batonga Foundation also expanded its partnership with TOMS shoes and Africare to provide shoes to 100,000 students and their community members in Benin. Studies show that shoes can increase the school attendance by as much as 62%. In partnership with Africare and the African Well Fund, the Batonga Foundation was able to provide clean water wells and bathroom access to 5,106 secondary students in three schools in Bembereke, Benin. Cholera and diarrhea are endemic in this area of Benin, as the local water and sanitation is poor. The new project improved clean water access and sanitation, upgraded the learning environment and enhanced public health in this important crossroads region.AdvocacyBatonga continued to work to advocate the empowerment of women through secondary school and higher education in 2014. Batongas founder, Angelique Kidjo, attended the White House Dinner for African Leaders in August to bring awareness to the cause. In May, Angelique joined the First lady, Michelle Obama at a roundtable discussion about the Nigerian schoolgirls kidnapped by the terrorist group Boko Haram. She spoke about the importance of school safety and international girls education.Angelique also called on African leaders to send girls to school in an Op-ed she authored that was published by CNN in June of this year.Capacity BuildingWe have continued to focus on capacity-building for the Foundation by recruiting, hiring and training interns to manage Web 2.0 platforms and small campaigns, events, and initiatives. As we grow and develop, Batonga is proud to acknowledge that our minimal operating expenses compared to the large scope of our outreach allow the Foundation to build our capacity as an organization without compromising the integrity of the work we do. |

A total of 6 missions of three days each are planned per year in the north and south. The Program Officer will lead the monitoring missions;Organization of an internal evaluation each school year;Organization of a community assembly in Benin for discussion and analysis of results during each holiday season;Organization of an external evaluation at the end of the project by an external consultant;Production of a record of Batonga Girl Scholars academic achievement at the end of each evaluation to measure the improvement in the academic performance of girls;Periodic assessments carried out by the GAJES Program officer at the different implementing sites of the program including schools and Batonga Girl Scholars homes to ensure the quality of programs activities and to identify areas in need of improvement;At the end of each quarter of project implementation, GAJES project management team will produce reports of project activities which Batonga and USAID will review and discuss in order to identify areas in need of improvement. |
