IRS990/Desc0In 2015, the Batonga Foundation advanced its mission by forging strategic partnerships with diverse organizations, corporations, and government entities, and by managing multiple programs and advocacy campaigns focused on the advancement of gender equality in secondary school education. In addition, the Batonga Foundation demonstrated the ability to develop innovative solutions to the barriers girls face when pursuing an education. ProgramsThe Batonga Foundation takes a holistic approach to girls education, providing the most disadvantaged girls with everything from scholarships and mentoring programs, to shoes, school supplies, in-kind donations for parents, and water wells and sanitation systems for schools. Our goal is to eliminate obstacles to girls continuation of school after the primary level. In 2015, Batonga worked to provide access to education, equip girls with the tools they need to succeed and ultimately shift views regarding the importance of girls education to advance gender equality in schools. Batonga has provided consistent feedback and advisory support to our NGO partners in Benin, Cameroon and Ethiopia and has worked closely with them to ensure that our efforts are effectively advancing gender equality in schools and supporting womens empowerment at the regional and national levels. Specifically, in Benin, Batonga has continued its partnerships with USAID and local NGOs to target and support the most vulnerable and disadvantaged girls in their respective communities. Partnering with USAID has allowed the Batonga Scholarship Program to co-finance $300,000 over three years to support 101 Batonga scholars seeking to continue their studies. Additionally, Batongas 2015 partnership with the Peace Corps in Benin helped to enhance student-support resources for the Batonga Scholarship Program by providing each scholarship recipient with a Peace Corps Volunteer as a personal mentor and encouraging the scholars to complete community service projects. This mentorship program has provided girls with a hands-on approach to receiving resources and the personal guidance necessary to continue school. In Cameroon, Batonga continued its partnership with African Action Aids to support three major programs that provide knowledge about respect of ones own body, teach healthy practices and enhance economic opportunities for women and girls though the provision of scholarships. In 2015, four girls graduated to move onto secondary education or formal employment. In Ethiopia, Batonga partnered with Hope for Children and Next Generation, two local NGOs, to provide support to 28 young women aged 16-23 facing on-going challenges that would have otherwise prevented them from continuing their education. Batongas support allowed girls to earn the grades needed to attend and succeed in university and get access to the resources and materials needed to facilitate learning. To date, Batonga has provided over 5,250 academic years of education to girls in need and supported them with holistic scholarship packages that include mentoring and life skills training. Many of these girls are pursuing careers in fields such as engineering, accounting and nursing. We have also supported 8,727 students, their families and community members with access to water wells and latrines across 7 schools in Benin, given over 120,000 pairs of shoes to scholars (girls and boys) in the poorest regions of Benin for the long walk to school and distributed hundreds of gifts of in-kind support such as rice and oil to parents/guardians of students in Benin in order to offset the opportunity cost of sending their girls to school.AdvocacyBatonga continued to work to advocate for the empowerment of women through secondary school and higher education in 2015. Batongas founder, Angelique Kidjo, participated in a number of prominent events with leading development organizations to highlight the need for girls education in Africa. In July, Angelique gave the closing remarks at
