For the past twelve years thousands have attended in person and thousands more have watched on the NAF website. The NAF conducted a Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy (DPN) National survey and released the results. Nearly 1,000 patients responded to the survey. The NAF continued its DPN awareness campaign and released awareness posters in both Spanish and English which were distributed to provider offices throughout the U.S.The NAF released a Financial Assistant Programs Patient Guide. The NAF created and released a Continuity of Care Policy Principles and Priorities brochure. The NAF continued its bi-monthly Patient Voice newsletter. When it comes to treating the over 100 different types of neuropathy, out-of-pocket costs can put medications out of reach for some patients. Worse, pharmacy benefit companies increasingly are restricting the list of drugs they will cover, leaving patients to pay the full cost of the medication they need. Consider, too, that neuropathy is a chronic disease, often requiring ongoing treatment. It's no wonder why the NAF receives so many calls from patients worried about access to their medications. To this end, the NAF created a patient brochure that lists various assistance programs that we help will allow patients to continue or obtain needed treatments and medications. The brochure is titled: Financial Assistance Programs for IVIG and Other Medications. In 2017, the NAF released the results of a national Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy (DPN) patient Quality of Life (QOL) survey. Out of 978 total survey responses the majority of patients reported that they were misdiagnosed multiple times before they were accurately diagnosed with DPN (59%). More than 52% reported that it took more than a year to be accurately diagnosed. Of these individuals, more than 49% reported that it took over two years to be accurately diagnosed. The majority of survey respondents reported that they currently experience nerve pain (64%). Given these results the NAF launched a poster in both English and Spanish in 2018 to be hung in providers' offices in hopes of bringing awareness to this disease. The posters can also be found on the NAF website. Our goal is to bring additional awareness to DPN and help the general public better recognize the symptoms and warning signs of DPN. We also hope the flyer sheds light on the importance for patients to have meaningful conversations with their health care providers about how to better recognize and manage DPN symptoms. | - | - |
