The NAF celebrated its 10 year anniversary in 2016. Therefore, the NAF held its 10th annual "Neuropathy Action Awareness Day" which provided an opportunity for patients to interact with other patients, physicians and exhibitors. Over 200 Neuropathy patients/caretakers attended this event in person and over 1,000 watched the event live via the latest live streaming technology to learn about neuropathy and to promote awareness of this disease. The NAF has accomplished more than we ever imagined possible since our inception. A few of the NAF's accomplishments include:Provided comprehensive online neuropathy resources that have been viewed by millions of neuropathy patients and their caregivers from around the world annually.Provided patients with our bi-monthly "Patient Voice" e-newsletter.Helped over 532 patients with access issues obtaining IVIG and other medications.Held the largest neuropathy education event in the U.S. annually called the "Neuropathy Action Awareness Day." For the past ten years thousands have attended in person and thousands more have watched on the NAF website.Created a Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy (DPN) public service announcement (PSA) featuring celebrity Jerry Mathers from the classic hit sitcom Leave it to Beaver. The PSA has aired in 39 cities in 23 states.Created the first ever multifocal motor neuropathy (MMN) brochure and PSA. The PSA has aired in 74 cities in 30 states and has received over 15,000 views on YouTube.Featured on ABC, NBC, CNN, IG Living, Neurology Now and many other publications and broadcasts bringing increased awareness to neuropathy.Advocated for access to IVIG and other medications via press conferences, letters, newsletter articles and traditional and social media$75,890-
Through our website and patient brochures in 2016 the NAF reached millions of patients and interested parties obtain the necessary resources, information and tools to access individualized treatment to improve their quality of life. The NAF also increased awareness among physicians, appropriate institutions, the general public and public policy officials that neuropathy can potentially be a serious, widespread and disabling condition, which may be treatable when appropriate medical care is provided. Other 2016 accomplishments include:In 2016 the NAF launched a Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy (DPN) national survey. DPN is the most common type of neuropathy in the United States causing pain or loss of sensation in the feet, hands and arms. It is estimated that there are 15-20 million cases in the United States alone. Given the size of this problem, it is odd that more people do not know about it. Therefore, the NAF launched a DPN Quality of Life (QOL) Survey in 2016. By examining the QOL of DPN patients the NAF hopes to increase disease awareness among researchers, providers, the general public and public policy officials. Understanding QOL is critical to better understand what is needed to help DPN patients. In 2016 the NAF announced the results from the first ever international Multifocal Motor Neuropathy (MMN) Quality of Life (QOL) Patient Survey. The survey focused on three primary areas: timely and accurate diagnosis, efficacy of treatment, and the impact of the disease on patients quality of life. The majority of the 214 patients completing the survey were from the United States (71.15%) and the United Kingdom (6.73%) with respondents from 22 other countries also contributing to the results. While the majority of patients reported that they were diagnosed between the ages of 41 and 65 years (56.52%), more than 67% of those completing the survey reported that it took more than one year to be diagnosed. Of these individuals, more than 44% reported that it took 2-3 years or longer to be accurately diagnosed. The majority of the misdiagnoses were reported by Neurologists (54.60%) and Family Care Providers (20.69%). The data also showed that 51.96% of the respondents had conduction block, a characteristic finding of the condition. When asked about treatment options, 91.43% reported receiving intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) and 8.57% reported receiving subcutaneous immunoglobulin (SCIg) therapy. A reduction in symptoms was reported within one week of their first Ig treatment by 36.30% of respondents. Only 6.67% reported that IG did not help them manage their symptoms. If recommended by their Neurologist, 81.05% would consider SCIg treatment. Half of all participants in the survey stated that MMN often or always interferes with their employment and 56% said it impacts their overall quality of life. Basic tasks such as turning a key in a lock are either difficult or impossible for 53.24% of the MMN patients participating in this assessment. The data showed that 61.19% were either unable or had difficulty buttoning a shirt, though 61.62% are able to shop and run errands by themselves. While 58.38% of survey participants said that they had difficulty falling asleep at night due to MMN, 77.66% reported daytime sleepiness. A more detailed analysis of the survey findings is available on the NAF website at http://www.neuropathyaction.org/downloads/MMN_article%XXX-XX-XXXX.pdf--
