The mission of the Rockfish Valley Foundation is to preserve the natural, historical, ecological and agricultural resources of the Rockfish Valley. We accomplish this with an education process that uses the following resources: the Nelson Scenic Loop, Spruce Creek Park, the Natural History Center, six miles in the Rockfish Valley Trail System, and lands associated with them. The mission further supports conservation, recreation, preservation, agricultural and environmental education, and promotes a rural tourism experience in the Rockfish Valley of Nelson County, Virginia. We aim to inspire a healthy lifestyle by offering hiking trails, a public park, programs and events. We support all students whether in Nelson public schools, home schools or private schools. The lands serve as our outdoor laboratory for students, the community and visitors, alike. Our vision is to enhance environmental literacy and create better stewards. We are the nature guys and Nature is our game.

| ROCKFISH RIVER TRAILS, CHILDREN'S NATURE TRAIL AND SPRUCE CREEK PARK OPERATIONS, MAINTENANCE AND VISITATION. The Covid 19 pandemic impact continued to impact certain aspects of operation and outreach. All facilities were open. Increased levels of visitation continued with estimates as high as two times pre Covid. Families and children especially took advantage of our access to outdoor play and learning. A significant grant was received and quickly spent to repair and refresh trail facilities such as the bridge from Glenthorne parking. To handle the increased grounds maintenance, the Volunteer Committee set up a workday and recruited trail monitors and increased maintenance, such as more frequent removal of trash. It showed promise but requires leadership. The 2020 grant with VA Department of Forestry, Chesapeake Bay Fdn and the James River Assoc for Rockfish for stream buffer planting in 2020 was monitored and plans made for winter 2022 refresh along the South Fork and Still House Branch. Tree take was about 50% and some replacement expected. Chuck Bailey and his students from William and Mary completed a geological map and brochure for the Rockfish trails and plans continued for the Blue Ridge Mtn app. A public lecture on Nelson County's unique geology was prepared by him and he also lectured via Zoom to a wide audience on Nelson County geology. Additionally, another lecturer was Dr Callen Bentley from James Madison University. These lectures are available via YouTube. Planting of native plants continued; repair of wood base to gazebo took place. | $16,800 | $20,243 |
| ENVIRONMENTAL LITERACY-building sustainability and capacity. RVF has the vision of a community understanding its natural resources, culture and history as well as becoming environmentally literate. The recreational trails grant was continued, funded by the VA Department of Conservation and Recreation, a local private foundation, and two community foundations: BAMA Works and Charlottesville Area Community Foundation. Paul Skalleberg was hired as the ENLIT project manager with completion expected in 2022. The project develops environmental content to be displayed thru NFC tags and other connectivity on the trails and within the park. Identified content providers will provide materials that will be formed into story telling modules to be accessed on the trails for an educational trail walk learning experience. These content creators will be sought from the staff of state agencies, the area schools, nonprofits, and, in particular, those associated with the Virginia Conservation Network. An advisory committee is expected to be formed. This will be a unique outdoor education program in Virginia. ENLIT is a transformational and multi-year project, and with it comes the necessity to refresh administration practices and capacity. Most task have been performed by the founders and transition continued in 2021. Plan was developed to hire a capacity builder and administrator in early 2022. The Foundation will seek to build work toolboxes and task templates. RVF was awarded a grant in 2021 to use Catchafire services, and began projects that support the transition work, trustee recruitment, and governance refresh for the benefit of the community continuity. More than a dozen governance related documents were completed and it was hoped that 2022 would support transition of the founders to a higher level away from operational tasks and provide capacity to support sustainability. The community support for the RVF budget continued with a first time mark of 300 donors reached. The organization continued to lack capacity and put too much responsibility on the founders and a few others. Challenges lie ahead. The budget must provide funding to take the Future of RVF to sustainability and achieve more that support its mission and vission. RVF will utilize technology to provide environment content and invite others to lead programs. It does not currently intend to have staff to create programs. IPads are being sought and loaded with Apps such as PictureThis, INaturalist and Merlin along with EnLit and content focused on water, rocks, plants and animals. Families will take them from the Natural History Center into Spruce Creek Park. RVF does not anticipate hiring staff to provide programs but rather have an education committee, operations manager and volunteers working with students, teachers and schools. | $343 | $7,462 |
| COMMUNITY NATURE PROGRAMS. RVF is the nature guys, as big as all outdoors and holds education of the community as its top objective. The Natural History Center (NHC) is an indoor teaching resource, opened in 2012, but remained closed to the public for the entire year. However, major design work and installation of new exhibits were undertaken and it reopened in 2021. Old Wintergreen Day was held with nearly 20 exhibitors, food and a band. It present crafts and the way of life in the early days of Nelson county which was created in 1808. Chesapeake Bay Restoration Fund paid out $8000 in grants delayed by Covid and plans began to implement then in 2022. They are to be allocated to Spruce Creek Park program development and watershed focus. RVF accomplished two unique and valuable programs in 2021.The most significant accomplishment was the addition of StoryWalk, a collaboration with Nelson Memorial Library on along the Children's Nature Trail in Spruce Creek Park. As the first of its kind in Nelson County and the wider region, it was unveiled in October and a second one along the S. Rockfish trails is planned for dedication in January 2022. StoryWalks are intended to provide a pleasant way to learn about the out of doors and focus on water, rocks, plants and animals.; another first time event for Nelson was the inaugural RVF Plein Air Paint Out along the Rockfish trails which attracted 24 artists, produced 60 landscape paintings with nearly 1/2 sold. This was a great success even though the weather was not good. In conjunction with it, nature walk/talks were lead along the trails by local naturalists and geologists on one afternoon. It is expected to be repeated in 2022. | $4,480 | $5,794 |
