The mission of the Rockfish Valley Foundation is to preserve the natural, historical, ecological and agricultural resources of the Rockfish Valley. We accomplish this with an education process that uses the following resources: the Nelson Scenic Loop, Spruce Creek Park, the Natural History Center, six miles in the Rockfish Valley Trail System, and lands associated with them. The mission further supports conservation, recreation, preservation, agricultural and environmental education, and promotes a rural tourism experience in the Rockfish Valley of Nelson County, Virginia. We aim to inspire a healthy lifestyle by offering hiking trails, a public park, programs and events. We support all students whether in Nelson public schools, home schools or private schools. The lands serve as our outdoor laboratory for students, the community and visitors, alike. Our vision is to enhance environmental literacy and create better stewards. We are the nature guys and Nature is our game.

| UPGRADE OF CHILDREN'S NATURE TRAIL AND SPRUCE CREEK PARK. This park is a natural area that teaches the elements of water, rocks, plants and animals. In 2018, 6 educational station kiosks were constructed of natural materials. This is the only public park in Nelson County. The Rockfish Valley Community has welcomed it and encouraged its development. Visitation has risen a lot during the year. The interaction areas demonstrate the four elements described above: water, rocks, plants and animals. More picnic areas were developed to encourage longer stays in this natural environment. Pollinator areas were enhanced. A 900 foot trail was improved so that a family can walk an outdoor area and be personally involved with environmental elements. Our mission statement emphasizes enhancement of environmental literacy and these efforts were needed to make education along the trail work better. Plans were begun to expand in 2019. The Park relates to and supports the work of the natural history center and in 2018 field trips and nature days were held using both resources. The goal for 2018 was to improve both and help them better connect. We learned from this that we need the continue development of the park for families and to develop materials for self guided walks. We also made use of the John Deere zero turn mower purchased with a grant and undertook to build a volunteer group to maintain the park. The volunteers keeping up the grounds have made a difference. We began to evaluate the need for other native trees and planted a good number. Many of those were red buds. Our relationship with the Nelson High School shop continued. It was determined to review this and connect with the new superintendent and her staff to make our resources serve their needs in ways they could tell us. More picnic benches were constructed by the Nelson High School shop. With a donation of $300 for materials we are able to get a heavy quality hexagonal table with benches built and a plaque attached recognizing the donor. We need more of these. All of these little things upgraded the park and as the word spread visitation grew. We were fortunate to have a volunteer committee and chair come together in 2018. | $12,124 | $18,592 |
| INFRASTRUCTURE. Infrastructure repairs and upgrades were a major accomplishment. Spruce Creek Park, Children's Nature Trail and Rockfish Valley Trail System have four principal parking areas and miles of trails. We estimate 13,000 individual visits each year in our three areas that we support: a) the Natural History Center, b) Spruce Creek Park (SCP) and the Children's Nature Trail (CNT), and c) the six miles of the Rockfish Valley Trail System along the South Rockfish River, Reid's Creek and Spruce Creek. We determined that the parking lot system was in need of an upgrade as the visits occur in all seasons. Even in the January, February and March time frame, when the NHC was closed, the Trail System and the Spruce Creek Park continued to have regular use. Trail and parking lot improvement inclduing the entrance road and parking lot in SCP was improved with truck loads of gravel and spreading. A parking area off Glenthorne Loop was formed, scraped to remove topsoil, underlain with polypropylene and filled with a fine gravel. The 900 feet of trails of the CNT were scraped to remove topsoil, underlaid with polypropylene and filled with a fine gravel. Sand was spread in the educational areas of the mud kitchen and elsewhere. The Rockfish River trail system and SCP are impacted by heavy rains and winds. Tree removal was a major accomplishment. The Rockfish river stream mitigation project which was an outgrowth of the original Rockfish Watershed Forum. It reached a point in 2018 where monitoring lead to repairs and major rework was done along a mile of the stream along which the trails run. This positively impacted the trail system with more interesting vistas, water overlooks and places for families to enjoy access. RVF has been fortunate to have this educational project and fortunate that it has been monitored since completion in 2005. A dozen state and federal agencies have participate and learned more about stream restoration. It has been the earliest such project east of the Mississippi. While RVF has done some work to share this knowledge with the public it was clear from the 2018 work that we can do more and need to seek the help of VDOT to provide the story. In conclusion 2018 was a year to assess our infrastructure needs and for much work to be done. This was a significant investment of our budgeted funds. | $1,778 | $2,005 |
| NATURAL HISTORY CENTER. The Natural History Center (NHC) as opposed to the park and trails is an indoor teaching resource. It was opened in 2012. It is affiliated with the VA Museum of Natural History. They provide advice, exhibit loans and credibility. They do not provide staffing or funding. NHC reflects our four environmental elements: water, rocks, plants and animals. If one leaves the NHC and enters our other educational resources (Children's Nature and Spruce Creek Park, or the Rockfish Trail System of 6 miles of trails) one will see the focus on these as well. The NHC is a valuable part of our resources in that it provides learning materials and exhibits from which a family can learn and then relate to the natural resources and elements outdoors. It is also the most challenging of our three resources. It is all about exhibits and volunteers. We determined the need to fund the position of NHC manager and develop a strong committee with an annual plan. We obtained our first paid manager for the NHC and created a job description. This was only partly successful. Late in the year that person was replaced with a more determined individual who has taken us to a new level. In 2018 the NHC displays were upgraded and rearranged in 2018.. Display materials were needed to accomplish this. This was the first upgrade in two years. The current manager is a volunteer so the funds can support other needs in the NHC. It is still challenging but the leadership that was lacking is now working hard and communicating with other members of the team has improved greatly. So 2018 was a good year for management of the NHC and some strong steps forward. Approximately 2,500 visitors enter the Natural History Center a year and it was felt change was important although much of it remains a permanent teaching display. We also added to our educational materials. We have maintained three computer terminals for public use and their educational value increases as we add additional programs. The NHC is an important resource but is a challenge and will be an ongoing effort. The hours of the center are limited. We have tried to be open from 10 am to 4 pm on Saturdays and Sunday. We have tried to add Wednesdays to provide a week day option for home schools and private schools. We also need more open time in our environmental education work with the Nelson Schools. This has not worked as well as it needs to. serious effort has begun to attract more volunteers and we had a recruitment event in the spring of 2018. It was a good beginning and from it have come a number of "super" volunteers. Volunteer recruitment, training, retention and rewarding will be a stronger focus in 2019. It will indeed be a focus along with marketing of our resources and education work. | $1,778 | $470 |
