Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The mission of the Rockfish Valley Foundation is to preserve the natural, historical, ecological and agricultural resources of the Rockfish Valley. We accomplish this with an education process that uses the following resources: the Nelson Scenic Loop, Spruce Creek Park, the Natural History Center, six miles in the Rockfish Valley Trail System, and lands associated with them. The mission further supports conservation, recreation, preservation, agricultural and environmental education, and promotes a rural tourism experience in the Rockfish Valley of Nelson County, Virginia. We aim to inspire a healthy lifestyle by offering hiking trails, a public park, programs and events. We support all students whether in Nelson public schools, home schools or private schools. The lands serve as our outdoor laboratory for students, the community and visitors, alike. Our vision is to enhance environmental literacy and create better stewards. We are the nature guys and Nature is our game.

EDUCATIONAL PARTNERSHIPS. With limited resources, RVF must collaborate with and seek content creation and program support from others. Three partners will be mentioned. First, a recreational trails grant was begun, funded by the VA Department of Conservation and Recreation, a local private foundation, and two community foundations: BAMA Works and Charlottesville Area Community Foundation. It will seek other funding and after the government environmental review is completed in Mid-2020 undertake the creation of environmental content to be displayed thru Wi-Fi connectivity on the trails and in the park. The content providers will provide a program or educational trail walk video experience. These content creators will be drawn from the staff of state agencies, the area schools, nonprofits, and in particular those associated with Virginia Conservation Netbook. This is a unique education program in Virginia. Second, Chuck Bailey, faculty with William & Mary Department of Geology along with his field course students undertook multiple field trips in the South Rockfish River Valley and began to study the local geology and develop maps, storyboards, and other educational content for RVF. Third, Blue Ridge School in Albemarle County, thru their environmental educator, Cory Wood reached out to RVF to bring students on multiple trips to study the trails along the South Fork of the Rockfish River and to construct maps and information to enhance environmental literacy opportunities along the trails. All three of these projects are going to continue through 2020.$22,000$0
UPGRADE OF CHILDREN'S NATURE TRAIL AND SPRUCE CREEK PARK. This park is a natural area that teaches the elements of water, rocks, plants, and animals. Since its development, visitation has grown to where exceeded 4000 in 2019 and has continued to grow. Events such as Old Wintergreen Day, school visits, Naturally Nelson, and other programs were held in the park. In 2019 RVF began hiring a staff person and individual contractors to do ground maintenance and enhance the facilities in both the park and on the trails. In 2019 the facilities at the Park were added to by construction with grant funds of a bocce court, a gaga pit, and a large screened gazebo. A climbing structure was also completed. Ground maintenance on a regular basis was begun by Jack Dichiara, a student at Nelson High School. The volunteers' committee was charged with growing the volunteers and we are having a regular workday with good results and the opportunity to hire other professionals to enhance the plants and water resources. This included adding two large Ginko trees at the park entrance in memory of our departed treasurer John Lloyd. Last but not least a grant was awarded by the VA Chesapeake Bay Restoration Fund to undertake a multifaceted project on Spruce Creek within the park.$2,966$15,774
NATURAL HISTORY CENTER. The Natural History Center (NHC) is an indoor teaching resource, opened in 2012. It is affiliated with the VA Museum of Natural History which provides advice and loan items for exhibit. They do not provide staffing or funding. NHC reflects our four environmental elements: water, rocks, plants, and animals. This four-part emphasis continues as you enter our other educational resources (Children's Nature Trail, Spruce Creek Park, and the Rockfish Trail System of 6 miles of trails). The NHC is a valuable part of our resources in that it provides learning materials and exhibits from which adults, children, or a family can learn and then relate to the natural resources and elements outdoors. It is also the most challenging of our three resources. It is all about exhibits and volunteers. In 2019 Betsy Agelasto undertook to reach out into the Beech Grove community and do oral histories to cover stories of the August 1969 disaster of hurricane Camille. Her research and interviews allowed the creation of a photo exhibit of the effect of Hurricane Camille. This exhibit was occasioned by the 50th anniversary of Camille. It was supported by other historic materials owned by RVF.$334$1,843
