Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The mission of the Rockfish Valley Foundation is to preserve the natural, historical, ecological and agricultural resources of the Rockfish Valley. We accomplish this with an education process that uses the following resources: the Nelson Scenic Loop, Spruce Creek Park, the Natural History Center, six miles in the Rockfish Valley Trail System, and lands associated with them. The mission further supports conservation, recreation, preservation, agricultural and environmental education, and promotes a rural tourism experience in the Rockfish Valley of Nelson County, Virginia. We aim to inspire a healthy lifestyle by offering hiking trails, a public park, programs and events. We support all students whether in Nelson public schools, home schools or private schools. The lands serve as our outdoor laboratory for students, the community and visitors, alike. Our vision is to enhance environmental literacy and create better stewards. We are the nature guys and Nature is our game.

III. Spruce Creek Park and trails again with the help of intern Stephen Tuso RVF now has upgraded Nelson Scenic loop website, Nelson Scenic Loop map and brochure, Rockfish River trails map, Rockfish River trails brochure and the very important What's in your backyard Activity guide shared with us by Friends of Rappahanock River. Another volunteer Jim Plitt started to work with us. He got the kiosks updated with the new materials. He has continued to work on websites, newsletters and lots of other things. At the same time our education committee worked on developing Spruce Creek Park's children's nature trail. We raised additional funds and handicapped accessible gravel dust was applied to the 900 foot trail the Rock stop was created. also several plant sections. there was a visit by second grade from rockfish River Elementary. 2016 is expected to further develop this. We are fortunate to have an education committee of 10 persons who are working diligently. they are Barb Fuhrman, Michael lachance, Rochelle Aronson, john Zawatsky, Betsy Agelasto, Lynn Fontana, Dave Francis , Leah Jung and Peter Agelasto. A 4000 grant was received to support connecting the nelson schools with the natural history center and spruce creek park resources. a $2000 grant was received to support a teacher to draft a plan to support this. The work on the trails, park and natural history center all support the objective of bring environmental literacy to children and in particular connecting schools to our resources.$6,797$822
II. Natural History Cneter Museum expansion and Education In 2015 the education committee came together and developed some goals and objectives. The natural history center had opened in 2012 and the exhibit that opened in april 2015 enhanced the existing material. it was at this time we brought in the biodiversity exhibit material which has been a major thrust in the entry court of the VA Museum of natural History.the relationship between that state museum and RVF which has an affiliate connection continued to develop. The volunteers created Camp Rockfish for young children and built on the concept of Rockfish Rangers crated under our intern Evan Spears the previous year. the committee realized the need to create materials that linked the center with the outdoors of Spruce Creek Park. A volunteer created a massive display of pressed leaves with info on trees. Others set out the Smokey the Bear poster unit. a family gets a free poster but must make a donation to get a second one. at the same time printed materials were enhanced to support various areas of education. They can be broken down simply as water, rocks, plants and animals. Items in the gift shop were selected to support that. The gift shop is not a great source of revenue as only a few $$$ are added to the spruce Creek Park and Trails. It is realized that activity guides and fund materials are what is needed to link the indoors with the outdoors. In 2015 Stephen tuso seved as an intern. He had the skills to develop new brochures and maps and imporove website, write newsletters and do so many things that were needed. All of this was part of the plan to connect the inside with the outside. As a result of his efforst we got a What's in your Backyard guide which was printed in 2016.r$6,000$551
I. Kite Festival 2017 will be the 9th year. 2015 was the biggest success to date with over 1400 in attendance. the event draws from a 50 mile geographic. the cost is provided by donations from businesses in the rockfish valley of Nelson County. Publicity is provided by our blue ridge Life Magazine and Charlottesville Family Magazine. in future years we will be using social media and Facebook boosts. The festival is one of the most popular events in the county. flyers are distributed to every student in Nelson and some Albemarle/Waynesboro schools. The vendors include a kite store, face painting, food trucks, a Duck Race, parachute races are very popular and even a 5 year old can do a super job of competing. This is also a free event. On the Sunday it is held the Rockfish Valley Foundation Natural History Center gets a lot of visitors and publicity. A goal is to create an environmental literacy tent supplied by state agencies like DOV, DEQ, DGIF, DCR and DOF. The state has such limited staff that this continues to take time. We know that environmental literacy is a big thrust in future school curriculum. We give away free kites to kids and they help color and put them together. this and parking and running the parachute races requires about 20 volunteers. RVF has no paid staff and is manned always by volunteers so it is a challenge.$3,029$1,594
goals and objectives into 2016 will focus on completing the Children's Nature trail and completing first phase of the Native Plant walk that was started in 2015. it will also be the year when stream restoration repairs are done on the south rockfish river and the RVF natural history center develops more docent training and visitor materials and presentations.$2,700$1,782

We aim to inspire a healthy lifestyle by offering hiking trails, campsites, programs and events. The lands serves as an outdoor laboratory for students, the community and visitors alike.

IRS990EZ/ProgramSrvcAccomplishmentGrp/DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt0I. RVF has no paid staff and is manned always by volunteers so it is a challenge.
IRS990EZ/ProgramSrvcAccomplishmentGrp/DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt1II. As a result of his efforst we got a What's in your Backyard guide which was printed in 2016.r
IRS990EZ/ProgramSrvcAccomplishmentGrp/DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt2III. The work on the trails, park and natural history center all support the objective of bring environmental literacy to children and in particular connecting schools to our resources.
IRS990EZ/ProgramSrvcAccomplishmentGrp/DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt3goals and objectives into 2016 will focus on completing the Children's Nature trail and completing first phase of the Native Plant walk that was started in 2015. it will also be the year when stream restoration repairs are done on the south rockfish river and the RVF natural history center develops more docent training and visitor materials and presentations.
