IN FY16, THE GBI ALLIANCE PROJECTS HAD A NUMBER OF NOTEWORTHY IMPACTS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS. ACTIVITIES CONDUCTED BY GBI ARE SPLIT INTO TWO BROAD CATEGORIES: (A) ACCESS AND (B) APPLICATIONS.(A) ACCESS PROJECTS FOCUS ON BRINGING AFFORDABLE, RELIABLE, AND COMPETITIVELY SERVICED BROADBAND (VOICE AND DATA) TO RURAL AREAS IN USAID PRIORITY COUNTRIES. THIS CAN BE ACHIEVED THROUGH BOTH TECHNOLOGICAL AND REGULATORY VEHICLES, AND OFTEN INVOLVE CUTTING-EDGE TECHNOLOGIES FOR LAST-MILE CONNECTIVITY.(B) APPLICATIONS PROJECTS USE CONNECTIVITY TO SUPPORT DEVELOPMENT SECTORS SUCH AS HEALTH, HUMANITARIAN RESPONSE, DEMOCRACY AND GOVERNANCE, ECONOMIC GROWTH AND DIGITAL INCLUSION, GENDER EQUALITY, AND EDUCATION. TOGETHER, ACCESS AND APPLICATION PROGRAMS MAKE UP A GBI PORTFOLIO THAT SAW NOTABLE HIGHLIGHTS IN FY16:1) JAMAICA AND INDONESIA BROADBAND PROJECTS WERE FULLY TRANSITIONED FROM GBI TO THEIR RESPECTIVE MINISTRIES. IN JAMAICA, 31 RURAL COMMUNITY SITES CAME ONLINE, ENABLING THOUSANDS TO ACCESS INFORMATION. IN INDONESIA, 800 VILLAGES NOW HAVE INTERNET CONNECTIVITY, AND THE GOVERNMENT PROMISES TO BRING ACCESS TO ANOTHER 800 VILLAGES, 140,000 SCHOOLS AND 5,000 HEALTH CLINICS.2) PAYMENTS INNOVATION EXPANDED ITS AREA OF FOCUS TO INCLUDE THE USE OF MOBILE MONEY IN HUMANITARIAN CRISES, GENDER DIMENSIONS OF ACCESSING DIGITAL FINANCIAL SERVICES, IN ADDITION TO BUILDING ON ITS SUCCESSFUL E-PAYMENTS TOOLKIT AND RELATED TOOLS. 3) WOMEN AND THE WEB HAS TRAINED 4,000 THOUSAND PARTICIPANTS IN KENYA THIS YEAR IN FACE TO FACE TRAININGS, BRINGING THE TOTAL REACHED TO 100,000 ONLINE AND IN-PERSON WOMEN. THE KENYA SITES ALSO ENJOYED A VISIT FROM USAID GENDER AND DEVELOPMENT AND GLOBAL DEVELOPMENT LAB STAFF.4) THE AFRICA BROADBAND PARTNERSHIP HAS DEVELOPED FRUITFUL COLLABORATIONS WITH ZAMBIA AND MALAWI, AS BOTSWANA ACTIVITIES PROGRESS. WITH ONGOING WORK IN LIBERIA, NEW COLLABORATIONS IN UGANDA, AND THE POTENTIAL TO WORK WITH 3-4 ADDITIONAL MISSIONS AS PART OF THE ACCESS 2.0 EFFORT, GBI CONTINUES TO CREATE A STRONG PORTFOLIO OF AFRICAN CONNECTIVITY PROJECTS AND EXPERTISE. |
