| 2017 at Bi Ai had been a busy and successful year. In 2017, 138 Chinese nationals and 118 foreign nationals came to work together toward the common goal in making a difference for our students and for our collective future. From China, Educational Department officials, principals and teachers and governmental officials from the national, provincial and county levels came to observe how we are doing and to exchange ideas of the new educatiional methods that we have been known for. . Annually the Hong Kong BoAi Foundation Mission Team comes during the Easter Holidays. This year besides serving to teach English or doing the dental exams and surgeries for our entire student body and staff and the villagers by the four dentists and 8 dental students from the Hong Kong Dental School, it had started the idea of a Carnival for our students during their time at Bo Ai. The Carival was easily the favorite event of the Year. There were 16 stalls of fun games, popcorn, cotton candy, face painting and prizes given out for points earned during the games and points earned during the year for behavior improvement and scholastic excellence. The Shiu Pong College of Macau University again came to serve with a 24 member contingent, the Houston team of 32 member contingent that has been coming annually to teach English or doing medical exams and treatments for our students, staff and villagers for the past 12 years and again the Hong Kong ECC Church team. Each team came to either teach, give diverse services according to the talents of their volunteer members. Louise Ho, a specialist of the English Phonics, taught several hours each day for a week on the English Phonics for our students and our English teachers. On receiving the invitations from our sister schools, the Holmglad High School and Holmglad #2 Primary School of Hong Kong, five of our directors/teachers flew to Hong Kong for a week in September to become better versed in the manner/method of kickoff and commencement of a new school year. We have seen in June of 2017 Bo Ai graduated the Thirteen Class of Sixth Grade Students and the Third Class of Middle School Students. There were forty nine Sixth Grade Graduates and thirty two Ninth Grade graduates. In Qinyuan County, Bo Ai maintained the number two standing for our Sixth Grade Graduates. However our Ninth Graduates did not do as well, slipped to third from second place among the seven middle schools in the Qinyuan County. Presently, there are sound and video monitor cameras installed in each classroom which can be accessed in a central location to monitor teaching and class events. The government donated the equipment and installation costs. During the 2017 summer vacation when the Elementary School Education Building is not occupied with teaching, the substandard twelve year old Bo Ai Elementary School Education Building received a much needed total remodeling. Thanks to all the teachers who came early to the School before the start pf the Fall Semester to help with the cleanup and to put the classrooms into order. We are grateful that the Canada Touching Lives Overseas held a Fund Raising Dinner in September that partially paid for the remodeling. Bo Ai also is grateful that a retired P.E. teacher from Canada donated two sets of Basketball Stands for our 2 basketball courts. The courts had been standing idle for more than a year without basketball stands. Xinyuan County Education Department held its first High School and Primary School Athletic Meet in October and Bo Ai School has done quite well. We did very well in the short distance races but did not do as well in the long jump, high jump and the long distances races as Bo Ai does not have a running tract field. This year the students and staff held a bazaar of used but still good clothing, used toys, games, household stuff and collected 3,900 yuan. With the money, they bought food and other household necessities and gave to the destitute or less fortunate. Many of the old villagers have problems squatting down because of arthritis or back problems. Bo Ai was able to buy with the proceeds 16 sit-down commodes. The middle school graders on a rotatiional basis visit old folk's homes on the 4th Wednesday of every month. Seven of our teachers were pregnant with babies, some with the government's sanctioned second child policy. Too many times we have to rearrange class schedules and have other teachers teaching classes outside of their range of expertise. Our needs continue to be on the search for a qualified principal. Bo Ai seems to have trouble finding a principal whom we deem to have the knowledge of the new methods of education and the love with his/her family to work at a village school setting. We have many blessings to be thankful for and much to reflect on and to look forward to in the days and months ahead. | $50,000 | $1,414 |
