Urban Habitat works to democratize power and advance equitable policies to create a just and connected Bay Area for low-income communities of color. We confront structural inequities impacting historically disenfranchised communities. Through strategic partnerships, we support increasing the power and capacity in low-income communities of color.

Urban Habitat brings race and class to the forefront of transportation, land use, and housing policies to create a Bay Area where low-income people of color can live in just and connected neighborhoods.

Financial Statement Notes

Part X : FIN48 Footnote

The Internal Revenue Service and the California Franchise Tax Board have determined that the Organization is exempt from federal and state income taxes under IRC 501(c)(3) and California RTC 23701(d). The Organization has evaluated its current tax positions as of December 31, 2020 and is not aware of any significant uncertain tax positions for which a reserve would be necessary. The Organizations tax returns are generally subject to examination by federal and state taxing authorities for three and four years, respectively, after they are filed.

IRS990/Desc0Our transportation advocacy focused on the development of a regional funding measure anchored by the VPT coalition, which we co-founded. We met with local and state elected officials to advocate for support of state enabling legislation (SB 278), as well as disseminated emails to our listserv. As a member of MTCs Transit Recovery Task Force we worked to address the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on public transit, which resulted in the release of a regional plan for public transit by MTC and the transit operators. As part of our housing work, we continued to lead the development of the Vallejo Housing Justice Coalition as well as the creation of a new community land trust to preserve affordable housing. In Oakland, met with city council members to advocate for the passage of a TOPA policy, as well as disseminated emails to our listserv in support of TOPA.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Urban Habitat's Boards and Commissions Leadership Institute (BCLI) trains and supports low-income people of color to serve on local and regional boards and commissions in the Bay Area. In 2020, we convened our 12th BCLI cohort with 17 fellows representing various counties in the Bay Area. Three of the fellows have been appointed to a commission. We supported organizations replicating the BCLI by hosting monthly technical assistance calls, and organizing an annual Summit that was held in July via Zoom. Urban Habitat hosted its fourth Civic Leadership Training (CLT), a pre-BCLI training series, with nine resident leaders from the city of Vallejo.
