Recommendations. Current and recent major policy initiatives include: workforce equity for a competitive economy: this initiative is exploring the critical intersection between workforce training, economic development, and equity concerns. In the last year we have published four reports in the series, which urge business and government leaders to seek policies and programs that advance three imperatives: robust economic growth for the region and state; closing the race gaps in employment, educational attainment and income; and improving workforce training so that it advances the first two priorities. The reports examine approaches for equitable economic and workforce development in detail, and identify key policy goals and practical strategies for implementing them. Smart investments in minnesota's students / statewide student success movement: growth & justice offers an evidence-based and cost-effective slate of strategies in the smart investments in minnesota's students report. This model advocates for cost-effective and proven interventions along the entire educational pathway that keep students on track for timely high school graduation and postsecondary attainment. Since the report's publication, growth & justice has continued to research schools and districts that have found ways to increase student achievement and to close race and income gaps. Over the last year, we have been building statewide support for a model of whole community engagement in their students' public education, sharing examples and research-based interventions that work. We envision using this model, which was originally created in an urban environment, and transitioning it to fit the needs of the various rural and smaller urban communities across minnesota whose populations, incomes and economies are unique. It is essential to the economic success of all regions in the state to focus on increased educational success for everyone, and especially for populations that have faced historical barriers. Smart investments in transportation for minnesota: public sector involvement in roads, transit and land use has a significant impact on communities and people, affecting economic growth and access to economic opportunity. This project presents policies for moving people to jobs, increasing transportation efficiency for freight, improving travel and travel choices, and reducing vehicle miles traveled to decrease greenhouse gas emissions. Government accountability and redesign: we have established a set of fundamental principles for governing with accountability and are working with many groups in minnesota - from the citizens league to the chamber of commerce to public employee unions - to foster redesign, collaboration and more cost-effective delivery of public- sector investments.
