Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

Our hungry for equity event on march 5th at st. Paul college met or exceeded most of these goals. The hungry for equity coalition had more partner organizations than we originally envisioned (8 as opposed to 5). This eclectic group included the following organizations: growth & justice, the minnesota education equity partnership, the center for school change, the citizens league, students for education reform, the minnesota private college council, the minnesota state college student association, and everybody in. Our total attendance exceeded 150 participants and came close to our goal of 200 participants. Almost all of our speakers were either students of color or leaders of color representing the partners. Our program content and breakout sessions were serious and substantive, but also spirited and edgy at times, and responses to our survey of participants were highly positive. The front-stage presence of a gifted muralist who illustrated in real time the hungry for event themes provided an artistic backdrop for the participants. The event produced a workable and specific higher-education equity policy agenda that growth & justice and other partners have been promoting individually and collectively to legislators, a wider set of state policy- makers and influencers, and the general public. Measuring progress in political movements is difficult. However, growth & justice and our partners believe this event sent a reinforcing signal and was an important catalyst in establishing racial equity as a primary rather than secondary priority. The hungry for equity partners communicated elements of our policy recommendations to legislators throughout a legislative session in which racial disparity emerged as a separate, supplemental budget priority. Career pathways: growth & justice produced compelling personal stories of young adults, some of them once incarcerated or homeless, who are now thriving because of innovative career pathway models that lifted their fortunes and put them in careers that are in high demand in the twin cities regional economy. That story-telling also explains in detail exactly how the best of these emerging career pathway models actually work. In 2017 and beyond, stories like these will be used to persuade decision-makers at the legislature and elsewhere to improve and invest more in career pathway partnerships and other workforce training and credentialing that puts the underemployed quickly into the skilled jobs that are most in demand throughout the twin cities region and all of minnesota. All of those stories involving extensive interviewing of nine "pathfinders- and dozens of career pathway partners. Our persuasive story-telling for workforce equity reaches a much broader audience than just decision-makers at the capitol. In late 2015, our narrative about promising career pathways models was featured on the cover of the sunday star tribune's op-ex section. After opening vignettes about a couple of inspiring single moms in anoka county who were succeeding through career pathways, we stated that "there's a moral to (these) compelling stories of overcoming odds to find a pathway - a moral for the 2016 minnesota legislature, and for all employers and policymakers who are looking for solutions to minnesota's two biggest problems. These problems would appear to be made for each other. The first is that minnesota is home to tens of thousands of underskilled and underemployed adults, and the state suffers some of the nation's worst racial disparities in workforce outcomes. The other big problem, as our economy continues to recover and grow, is a labor shortage driven by a mass wave of baby-boomer retirements and an economy that increasingly requires specialized skills and credentials." through mainstream media and a constant presence on new media (particularly minnpost) and social media and through our blogposts, growth & justice has maintained a drumbeat and a steady focus on reducing inequality and erasing ra

IRS990/Desc0HUNGRY FOR EQUITY COALITION: GROWTH & JUSTICE AND OUR HUNGRY FOR EQUITY COALITION ENVISIONED A "GALVANIZING SUMMIT OF DIVERSE NEW VOICES ASPIRING AFTER THE DREAM OF WORKFORCE (AND HIGHER EDUCATION) EQUITY" IN MINNESOTA. WE PROPOSED A GATHERING THAT WOULD SEEK CONSENSUS ON A "PRACTICAL AGENDA FOR ACTION FOR POST-SECONDARY COMPLETION AND EQUITABLE WORKFORCE OUTCOMES." WE WANTED AN EVENT THAT WOULD BE "OF, BY, AND FOR PEOPLE OF COLOR, AND NOT, AS WE TOO OFTEN HEAR 'ABOUT US, WITHOUT US.'" WE HOPED THAT "ON ANOTHER LEVEL, THE NONPROFIT PARTNERS OF THIS EVENT WILL CONNECT TO AND LEARN FROM EACH OTHER IN A MEANINGFUL WAY. THIS PARTNERSHIP WITH...EDUCATION-FOCUSED NONPROFITS IS AN EXCITING OPPORTUNITY FOR CROSS-SECTOR LEARNING AND EXPERIMENTATION" OUR HUNGRY FOR EQUITY EVENT ON MARCH 5TH AT ST. AFTER OPENING VIGNETTES ABOUT A COUPLE OF INSPIRING SINGLE MOMS IN ANOKA COUNTY WHO WERE SUCCEEDING THROUGH CAREER PATHWAYS, WE STATED THAT "THERE'S A MORAL TO (THESE) COMPELLING STORIES OF OVERCOMING ODDS TO FIND A PATHWAY - A MORAL FOR THE 2016 MINNESOTA LEGISLATURE, AND FOR ALL EMPLOYERS AND POLICYMAKERS WHO ARE
