Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 4D: Other Program Services Description

OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: Nutrition and Special Projects - LWB expanded its nutrition work to both Uganda and Cambodia in 2016. To help combat an ongoing problem of malnutrition, hot lunch programs were implemented for all of the children in its schools. In addition, a sustainable nutrition project was started in Uganda, with the purchase of cows, beehives, and chickens. Access to clean drinking water in the rural villages was a new challenge for LWB in 2016, and initial rainwater harvesting projects were begun. LWB also continued its nutrition work for orphaned children in China, providing specialized formula to infants when needed and providing fortified cereal to infants and toddlers in its foster care programs.LWB completed 20 special projects in 18 different locations in 2016. From purchasing items such as safe cribs for orphanages to arranging physical therapy training, LWB was able to bring comfort and hope to some very precious children around the world. An impactful project was the delivery of 558 coats and 410 mattresses to school children in Zeku County on the Tibetan plateau. LWB also continued to provide cleft bottles in 2016 to maternity hospitals and orphanages, with over 1,300 bottles distributed. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: Healing Homes Program- LWB continued its successful healing homes program in 2016, accepting children from throughout China in need of specialized care for their medical needs. Fifty-two children from seven provinces lived in LWBs healing homes. Children with medical needs such as prematurity, heart defects, megacolon, and other conditions which caused "failure to thrive" in an orphanage setting received intensive and often life-saving intervention from LWBs healing homes staff and partner hospitals.LWBs Loving Arms Healing Home cared for seven children born with anorectal birth defects, but the decision was made to close this home at the end of 2016 due to a decreasing number of children being referred with these particular special needs. Additionally, LWB completed its two-year commitment to the Guizhou Healing Home in Guiyang in 2016, a project run by the provincial Ministry of Civil Affairs. This is the first provincial level healing home in China, caring for children who receive surgery through the government's Tomorrow Plan, and LWB was honored to help in its establishment.

IRS990/Desc0Medical Care Program - LWB's Medical Program supported 268 pediatric medical procedures in 2016, with the majority performed in partnership with the Childrens Hospital of Fudan University in Shanghai, Anhui Childrens Hospital, and Hefei Cardiac Hospital. In China, children from 27 different orphanages in nine provinces received life-changing medical care.Another successful cleft exchange was held in April 2016, with physicians from the United States working side by side with doctors at Kaifeng Childrens Hospital to provide surgeries for both orphaned and rural children. Additionally, LWBs medical outreach was expanded to other countries at the end of 2016, assisting 12 children in Cambodia and one in Uganda. In 2016, LWBs Unity Initiative efforts were continued to provide essential medical care and surgeries to the children of families living in poverty. Seventy children were helped with medical procedures this past year, a 20% increase over 2015. Twenty-nine of those children received heart surgery.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Education Program - LWB has school projects helping orphaned and impoverished children from preschool through college. In total, 467 children were helped by this important program area in 2016. At the close of the year, LWB transitioned five of its six orphanage Believe in Me schools in China to full support and administration by the local governments. Although bittersweet, one of LWBs goals is long-term sustainability of its projects. In these five cases, the local governments were able to take full ownership of these successful projects that LWB had implemented. In 2016, three additional Believe in Me schools were opened, including one in Uganda and two in Cambodia, bringing educational support to 177 new children. LWBs Impoverished Student Support program continued to assist teens living in extreme poverty who would otherwise be unable to afford a high school education. Tuition support was provided to teens in both China and Cambodia. Additionally, LWB once again held a Life Skills training camp in the summer of 2016, bringing teens and young adults from orphanages in western China to Beijing to attend seminars on essential issues such as money management, sex education, and online safety.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0Healing Homes Program- LWB continued its successful healing homes program in 2016, accepting children from throughout China in need of specialized care for their medical needs.
