("ACO") held five orchestral concerts during the 2015-2016 season; "Opening Night" on Setember 10, 2015, "Bach's St. John Passion" on November 3, 2015, "Franz Josef Haydn's L'isola Disabitata" on February 23, 2016, "Classical Sensibility" on April 5, 2016, and "FestKonzert" on June 9, 2016. Some highlights from these performances include: "Opening Night" - A 50-piece period instrument orchestra and young Chinese fortepianist Jiayan Sun join forces for the Opening Night Concert of all-Beethoven. Mr. Sun is living in NYC for study in the doctoral program at Juilliard with a major in piano performance. As an artist interested in historically informed performance, he studies fortepiano as well as modern piano. His fortepiano teachers have included Audrey Axinn and Malcolm Bilson. The performance of the Emperor Concerto will feature a piano made in 1812 by Johann Fritz of Vienna. Piano Concerto No. 5 Emperor is Beethovens most dramatic and advanced composition for his own instrument, the fortepiano. An audience favorite since its premiere in 1811, this concerto is best known for its famous melodies and wide mood swings The ethereal slow movement probes all-new depths of human emotions, while the robust rondo finale has unrivalled rhythmic vitality. In all, hearing the Emperor Concerto feels like a deeply satisfying and complete walk with Beethoven at the height of his creative powers. Hearing this masterpiece within Beethovens sound world, with a historic piano and early 19th century musical instruments, is a rare opportunity anywhere. A survey of the most listened-to Beethoven symphony after the 9th shows the 7th as a close second. Not the ubiquitous 5th or the truly ingenious Eroica Symphony No. 3. This is likely because of the sunny A Major key and the unabashed exuberance of the finale. The slow movement has the minor mode and the hypnotic spun melody, while the finale brings both musicians and audience to the edge of their seats through the relentless drive and repetition. Few works accomplish the tenderness and the frenzy of the 7th Symphony. The Leonore Overture No. 3 is a perennial favorite throughout the world because of its heroic theme and blazing trumpet fanfares. This is a virtuoso work that taxes the finest of professional orchestras. A performance with period instruments promises a thrilling journey through the complex textures of the scoring. "Bach's St. John Passion" - The American Classical Orchestra presents J.S. Bachs St. John Passion, conducted by Thomas Crawford, on Tuesday, November 3, 2015, at 8:00PM at Alice Tully Hall with renowned tenor Rufus Mller as the Evangelist, making a return engagement in Bachs beloved St. John Passion. Members of the American Classical Orchestra Chorus will be featured in the solo arias. Bachs two surviving passions, the St. Matthew and the St. John, have become the bedrock of our western classical music canon. The passion offers compelling musical representations of the gospel story in graphic detail and timeless expanse. In the St. John, Bachs instrumental pallet is unique, employing now legendary solos for flute, hunting oboes, and Bachs most haunting solo for the viola da gamba."Franz Josef Haydn's L'isola Disabitata" - In Music Director, Thomas Crawford's words "Here is a condensed Haydn opera with fabulous arias on a par with Mozart's, orchestration superior to Mozart's, a libretto by the leading 18th century opera story teller, and a fairy tale ending. As I prepare the score for this almost-never heard music, I find myself asking 'what's not to love?""Classical Sensibility" - The Age of Enlightenment is revealed in a program of both well-known and rarely heard works. The ACOs acclaimed choir performs the stirring Requiem by Michael Haydn, Franz Josephs younger brother. IRS990/MissionDesc0The American Classical Orchestra recreates the sound world of the master composers. The ACO is devoted to preserving and performing the repertoire of 17th, 18th and 19th century composers. By playing the music on original instruments and using historic performance technique, we attempt to recreate the sounds an audience would have experienced when the music was written and first performed. We pass along skills and appreciation for this practice to future generations through concert performances and educational programs.Because period instruments were made of different materials, they produce a profoundly different sound from the 20th century instruments used in modern orchestras. Historical instruments, with their softer and more transparent, yet sometimes edgier tone, produce a delicacy in the gentler phrases and a pungent bite in the stronger passages. IRS990ScheduleA/FactsAndCircumstancesTestTxt0Current Year Facts and Circumstances: The following facts and circumstances apply in support of The American Classical Orchestra, Inc.s (ACO) public charity status: 1. Although the support percentage dipped below 33.33%, it is still well in excess of the 10% threshold and is substantial at 26.56% for the year. 2. ACOs support that was primarily public in nature came from solicitations of smaller dollar value donations from individuals, foundations and corporations as well as ticket sales for concerts. ACO is working actively to broaden its base of support by strengthening its development activities, e.g., more grant writing, soliciting corporate sponsorships, and seeking support for its acclaimed public education program called Classical Music for Kids. In addition, ACO is experimenting with new marketing approaches to increase ticket sales.3. In addition, ACO actively sought a diverse group of donors by holding a benefit during the 2016 fiscal year.4. In accordance with its mission, ACO hosts concerts on a large scale at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center, which is the 2nd highest revenue generator. During the year ended June 30, 2016, four concerts were held which brought classical masterpieces to life through music performed on original instruments. Additional concerts were held at St. Ignatius Church of the Antioch, also generating ticket revenue.5. Finally, ACOs childrens program, Classical Music for Kids, is focused on introducing children to classical music and to make live performance experience accessible to school audiences.
