Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Windustry's mission is to promote sustainable energy solutions and empower communities to develop and own clean energy assets. As an independent voice and resource acting in support of communities, we work - through education, outreach, and advocacy - to advance broad community commitment to renewable energy.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Landowner wind energy association resource center - windustry provides direct services, such as site assessments, wind resource analyses, economic modeling, equipment assessment and advising business set-up, to those seeking to develop a community wind project. In 2012, with support from the usda, windustry's lwea resource center continued to assist emerging rural wind energy enterprises in three states (wisconsin, montana and west virginia) and to move these landowner groups further along toward the goal of community-owned wind energy. Through the lwea, we also coordinated the region nine small wind bulk buy program in minnesota.
Activity 3
Wind energy advocacy - windustry works on the federal, state, and local levels to inform and advocate for policies that will stimulate wind development and other forms of renewable energy. Advocacy efforts in 2012 included:windustry worked with two wind industry groups (american wind energy association-awea and distributed wind energy association-dwea) on federal legislation to extend the federal production tax credit (ptc)/investment tax credit (itc). Windustry serves on the community wind committee of awea, which successfully sought an extension of the section 48 ptc/itc for land-based wind power. The itc extension for land-based wind power represents a critical piece of public policy necessary to continue the growth of distributed and community wind. Also, as an active member of dwea, windustry sought an expansion of the existing itc for community wind projects under 20mw which would be good until 2016. In the end, the federal ptc/itc was extended in january 2013 for one year with the added time that if a project begins construction in 2013 it can be completed by december 2014.windustry participated in and was invited to speak and submit comments in a recent distributed generation (dg) facilitated stakeholder dialog led by the minnesota division of energy resources (der). Several important findings came out of these discussions that will serve to move the dg process and minnesota's net metering policy forward. This work will help to create the culture of support and encouragement for dg in the short term and the greatly increased dg deployment in the states energy system over the long term that the original policy never did.

IRS990/Activity2/Description0LANDOWNER WIND ENERGY ASSOCIATION RESOURCE CENTER - WINDUSTRY PROVIDES DIRECT SERVICES, SUCH AS SITE ASSESSMENTS, WIND RESOURCE ANALYSES, ECONOMIC MODELING, EQUIPMENT ASSESSMENT AND ADVISING BUSINESS SET-UP, TO THOSE SEEKING TO DEVELOP A COMMUNITY WIND PROJECT. IRS990/Activity3/Description0WIND ENERGY ADVOCACY - WINDUSTRY WORKS ON THE FEDERAL, STATE, AND LOCAL LEVELS TO INFORM AND ADVOCATE FOR POLICIES THAT WILL STIMULATE WIND DEVELOPMENT AND OTHER FORMS OF RENEWABLE ENERGY.

AS AN INDEPENDENT VOICE ACTING IN SUPPORT OF COMMUNITIES, WE WORK THROUGH EDUCATION, OUTREACH, AND ADVOCACY TO ADVANCE BROAD COMMUNITY OWNERSHIP OF RENEWABLE ENERGY.
IRS990/ActivityOther/Description0PROGRAM SERVICE- COMMUNITY AND SMALL WIND RESOURCES. THROUGH OUR WEBSITE AND OTHER ELECTRONIC FORMATS, INCLUDING THE TELEPHONE, E-NEWSLETTER, AND SOCIAL MEDIA, WE HAVE DAILY INTERACTION WITH STAKEHOLDERS IN COMMUNITIES ACROSS THE COUNTRY. THE INFORMATION PROVIDED THROUGH THESE FORMATS IS CONSTANTLY MONITORED, UPDATED AND REFRESHED. ONE OF THE MOST UTILIZED TOOLS ON WINDUSTRY'S WEBSITE IS THE COMMUNITY WIND TOOLBOX. THIS UNPARALLELED RESOURCE INCLUDES 16 CHAPTERS OF ABUNDANT, PRACTICAL INFORMATION FOR FARMERS AND RURAL LANDOWNERS LOOKING TO DEVELOP COMMERCIAL-SCALE WIND PROJECTS, WITH SECTIONS DEVOTED TO PROJECT PLANNING, SITTING, PERMITTING, COST, TURBINE SELECTION, PUBLIC POLICY, AND OTHER KEY SUBJECTS. IN 2012, WE ALSO DEVELOPED NEW COMMUNITY AND SMALL WIND RESOURCES AND REBUILT THE INFRASTRUCTURE OF OUR WEBSITE TO BETTER SUPPORT OUR RESOURCES: WE RESEARCHED AND DRAFTED CASE STUDIES OF COMMUNITY WIND PROJECTS NATIONWIDE. THIS WORK INVOLVED CONDUCTING IN-PERSON AND TELEPHONE INTERVIEWS AND ONLINE RESEARCH, DOCUMENTING THE PROJECTS, AND DESIGNING A UNIFORM PRESENTATION FORMAT THAT IS INVITING AND ACCESSIBLE. TEN CASE STUDIES WERE COMPLETED. THESE CASE STUDIES WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE ON BOTH THE AMERICAN WIND ENERGY ASSOCIATION'S AND WINDUSTRY'S WEBSITES. DOCUMENTING THE SUCCESS STORIES OF EXISTING COMMUNITY WIND ENERGY PROJECTS AND MAKING THEM AVAILABLE TO STAKEHOLDERS IS AN IMPORTANT FIRST LEVEL OF TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE. WE ALSO LAUNCHED A PROJECT TO DEVELOP OF A SET OF REPLICABLE, STREAMLINED, INNOVATIVE MULTI-OWNER BUSINESS MODELS. THESE MODELS ARE BASED ON REAL-WORLD WIND PROJECTS DESIGNED FOR USE BY MUNICIPALITIES, LANDOWNERS, LOCAL UTILITY COMPANIES, AND OTHER STAKEHOLDERS AS THEY SEEK TO ESTABLISH COMMUNITY WIND PROJECTS. BECAUSE SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS MODELS CAN ONLY EXIST WITHIN A FRAMEWORK OF SUPPORTIVE PUBLIC POLICY, THIS ONGOING INITIATIVE ALSO PROVIDES GUIDELINES ON CREATING A POLICY ENVIRONMENT FAVORABLE TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF COMMUNITY WIND ENERGY PROJECTS.THE CONTENT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (CMS) UPON WHICH THE WINDUSTRY WEBSITE WAS BUILT WAS WOEFULLY OUT OF DATE. IN 2012, WINDUSTRY'S TECHNICAL STAFF ATTENDED TRAINING SESSIONS AND WORKED WITH WEBSITE ENGINEERS TO TRANSFER AND REBUILD THE SITE. WE RECREATED MOST OF THE ADVANCED LOGIC THAT WAS BUILT INTO THE SITE ORIGINALLY AND IMPROVED THE USER EXPERIENCE WITH BETTER NAVIGATION TOOLS. MOST NOTABLY, WE CLEANED UP OUT OF DATE CONTENT AND DEAD LINKS, CAREFULLY ASSESSING 1600 PAGES ON THE SITE AND REFRESHING ABOUT 800 OF THEM IN SOME WAY. THIS NEW, IMPROVED WEBSITE GIVES US A BETTER PLATFORM UPON WHICH TO CONTINUE TO SERVE OUR LARGE ONLINE CONSTITUENCY (APPROXIMATELY 1,000 UNIQUE VISITORS PER DAY).
