Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Poptech's mission is to accelerate the positive impact of world-changing people, projects and ideas. Founded by bob metcalfe and john sculley, poptech is a 22-year old nonprofit committed to showcasing the vanguard of emerging technology, science, exploration and creative expression. From the renowned poptech conference, to its globally recognized fellows programs, collaborative initiatives, and exploratory labs, the organization stretches well beyond the notion of passive idea sharing. Instead, poptech cultivates an environment focused on robust exchange, instigation and action on a diverse set of challenges. Central to poptech's mission is a belief in the power of networked collaboration as a tool for social change. The work of the organization is supported by a diverse and committed community of some of the world's leading technologists, scientists and humanitarians, as well as the creative energy of designers and artists. The ingenuity of our network is prevalent in all we do. A ke

Major Activities

Activity 2
In 2011 PopTech continued its trajectory as a key global participant in the field of social innovation. Our programming provides education, leadership training and solution-generating convenings addressing a variety of global and societal issues and challenges. PopTech's Social Innovation Fellows and Science Fellows programs represent core mission commitments of PopTech. The programs were founded in 2008 and 2010 respectively. The goal of the programs is to accelerate the impact of future leaders and edge innovators through training in leadership, communications/storytelling and engagement and skill building in areas such as negotiation, fundraising, marketing, brand promise, human capital management and design for impact. In addition to training, the programs provide a rich environment of supportive immersion that promotes peer-to-peer mentoring. This environment is intentional and sets the stage for the development of collaborative partnerships. There have been 60 Social Innovation Fellows to date, and 28 Science Fellows. The Fellows operate in more than 60 countries around the world, and their work has impacted the lives of more than an estimated 300 million people. The Fellows programs are extremely competitive and have an increasing global reach. In 2011 we saw a 54% increase in nominations (336) and a 60% increase in geographic spread of nominations (57 countries) over previous years.PopTech Initiatives such as PeaceTXT, announced in 2010, are exemplar of our ability to facilitate unconventional cross-sector collaboration. PeaceTXT is exploring the role of mobile technology in the development of an integrated, globally deployable platform aimed at changing community norms around violent behavior, and as a violence interruption and crisis intervention tool when violence does erupt. The PeaceTXT collaborative team includes some of the worlds leading experts in violence interruption, mobile technology and crisis mapping. Current partners include PopTech, CeaseFire, Medic Mobile, Ushahidi, Praekelt Foundation and Kenya-based Sis ni Amani, as well as several other technical and funding partners. In 2012 PeaceTXT will be launching a series of pilots in Kenya to test the effectiveness of mobile messaging campaigns in lowering the potential of political violence in the run-up to Kenya's next national election. PopTech continues to explore unique areas of global interest through PopTech Labs. In February 2012 the organization will convene 30 experts of diverse background in Nairobi, Kenya for the Climate Resilience Lab. The convening will explore innovation at the intersection of community resilience and adaptation strategies through a gender lens that recognizes the disproportionate effect climate change will have on women and young girls, particularly in rural areas of the developing world. In September of 2012 we will facilitate the Networks of Abundance Lab that will focus on the future of the Internet and access to the broadband network that makes access to the power of the Internet possible. The questions that frame our conversation include: What broadband access actually is and thus what the future of broadband could be. Is access a human right? A public utility? A pay service like cable television or mobile phones? Or is it something wholly different and as yet undefined? Updates and reports from PopTech Labs can be found at http://poptech.org/labs.Finally, in 2011 PopTech continued to produce and distribute high-quality media, including video podcasts of conference speakers, Social Innovation Fellows, and project updates. We have seen significant growth in our social media followers and a steady increase in website visits and views of our online content. Through these activities and more, PopTech is gaining increasing global recognition as a leading participant in the field of social innovation.

IRS990/Description0In 2011, PopTech continued to be a key global participant in the field of social innovation. The October 2011 PopTech Conference - The World Rebalancing - explored how the global community is rebalancing economically, ecologically, culturally, demographically and geopolitically. We also explored the juxtaposition of a world marked by almost constant volatility and uncertainty and one that has seen transformational power of individuals and small groups and the emergence of a truly global culture in where the voice of a few inspires and reaches many.
