“The organization is a nonprofit membership corporation incorporated under the laws of the state of hawaii, with the following categories of membership: architect members are individuals admitted to membership with full voting status and privileges. Architect members may also hold the titles fellow and/or emeritus. Voting associate members are individuals admitted with limited voting status and privileges. Associate members may also hold the title emeritus. Honorary fellows, honorary members and allied members are three categories of non-voting membership.”

“Architect members have full rights and privileges, including but not limited to the following: a) to serve as voting members on chapter boards. B) to speak and vote in chapter meetings on business matters and in elections on all issues. C) to be appointed as members of committees at all levels of the institute. D) to serve as chapter delegates to state, regional, and national aia conventions. Associates members shall have the same rights and privileges as architect members, except as noted below: a) associates together may not hold more than two seats or one-third of the total seats, whichever number is greater, on chapter organization boards. B) associates may not vote on dues for architect members. Members vote to elect directors and officers of the governing body.”

“Members vote on dues assessments for various membership levels at the annual meeting. Members must approve any changes to the bylaws.”

“The annual form 990 is provided to the executive vice president for review and approval before being submitted to the irs. The form 990 is then presented at a meeting of the board of directors at the next scheduled meeting.”

“At each monthly board meeting, board members are asked to disclose any possible conflicts of interest. Upon disclosure, board members must recuse themselves while the determination of a conflict of interest is discussed and voted upon by the remaining members.”

“The executive vice president's compensation is based on merit, comparable compensation, and cash flow considerations as determined by the independent officers of the governing body.”

“The organization does not compensate officers or key employees, other than the executive vice president.”

“Governing documents, conflict of interest policy and financial statements are available to the public upon request.”

“To organize and unite in fellowship, the members of the architectural profession within the organization; to promote the aesthetic, scientific and practical efficiency of the architectural profession; to advance the science and art of planning and building by advancing the standards of architectural education, training, and practice; to coordinate the profession of architecture with the building industry; to insure the advancement of the living standard of the people through their improved environment; to make the architectural profession of ever-increasing service to society; and to protect the rights and interests of our members and advocate on their behalf.”

“Be recognized by their peers for their effort and dedication to excellence in architectural design. In doing so, aia honolulu hopes to raise public consciousness, awareness of design excellence, and the special role of aia architects in shaping our communities. C) annual installation of officers/directors and celebration - a fellowship event with a focus on recognizing and celebrating the accomplisments of member volunteers whose efforts have helped support the organization's goals throughout the year. Newly elected board members are inducted during the formal portion of the program. D) other member/industry continuing education programs - act as event sponsor and coordinator for other locally held architecture/design seminars as topics arise during the year. 2014 programs were primarily lunch and morning-hour programs on varied topics to provide needed continuing education for aia membership and to meet state licensure requirements. E) architecture licensing preparation courses - offer programs to intern architects in preparation for candidates to complete necessary requirements and examinations to become a licensed architect in hawaii. Programs are intended to reinforce the value of licensure within architecture firms and the role of mentorship to sustain the profession. F) holiday cheer event - the organization hosted a december holiday networking event for members with over 65 attending this gathering. The event celebrated a successful year of participation and recognized the work of sponsors and volunteers throughout the year.”

“Structures is donated to the hawaii foodbank. G) architecture month activities - held annually in april, the organization hosts a variety of free and public activities to highlight the power of good design in making our communities better places to live, work, and play. In 2014, events included walking tours (also offered throughout year), film night, and open houses of architecture firms. Local media assisted in event. Outreach efforts: h) public forums on topics related to the built environment - aia honolulu, through their center for architecture, offers public interest programs and communications to the public regarding the built environment. Topics relate to design and planning issues of current interest to the local community. In 2014, a town hall was held on to discuss urban vision for a new and developing honolulu neighborhood (kaakako). A follow-up panel + program explored the pedestrian experience. These events were taped and rebroadcast on olelo community televsion network.”
