Membership activities: a) annual design awards - provides an avenue for aia honolulu architects to be recognized by their peers for their effort and dedication to excellence in architectural design. In doing so, aia honolulu hopes to raise public consciousness, awareness of design excellence, and the special role of aia architects in shaping our communities. B) annual installation of officers/directors and celebration - a fellowship event with a focus on recognizing and celebrating the accomplisments of member volunteers whose efforts have helped support the organization's goals throughout the year. Newly elected board members are inducted during the formal portion of the program. C) other member/industry continuing education programs - act as event sponsor and coordinator for other locally held architecture/design seminars as topics arise during the year. 2018 programs were primarily lunch and morning-hour programs on varied topics to provide needed continuing education for aia membership and to meet state licensure requirements. (mostly virtual) d) architecture licensing preparation courses - offer programs to intern architects in preparation for candidates to complete necessary requirements and examinations to become a licensed architect in hawaii. Programs are intended to reinforce the value of licensure within architecture firms and the role of mentorship to sustain the profession. E) annual business meeting - the aia annual business meeting including annual reporting and election of incoming officers, including updates from the executive committee, a treasurer's report, and a call for volunteers. (virtual)

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4B

Public awareness programs: a) fifteenth annual canstruction design build competition - canstruction is a trademark of the society for design administration (sda), working in tandem with the american institute of architects (aia) and other members of the design and construction industry. This honolulu-based event, now in its fifteenth year, is intended as an annual community service program of the local aia honolulu chapter. Canstruction combines the competitive spirit of a design/build competition with a unique way to help feed hungry people. Competing teams, led by architects, contractors, and engineers showcase their talents by designing giant sculptures made entirely out of canned foods. At the close of the exhibitions all of the food used in the structures is donated to the hawaii foodbank. This year's event was scaled down due to covid. B) design symposium - in 2020 aia honolulu collaborated with the university of hawaii school of architecture to host a virtual design symposium that was designed to increase public awareness and appreciation for architecture and to foster discussoin about the built environment.
