IRS990/Desc0Our two medical programs - Smiles For Kids With Cancer and Smiles on Wheels - contribute to achieving our exempt purpose by bringing educational and emotional support to hospitalized children and providing health-care professionals with powerful tools to raise the spirits of ill children and their families with "The Jester Has Lost His Jingle" children's book and doll.A. Smiles For Kids With CancerOur Smiles For Kids With Cancer program contributes directly to achieving our exempt purpose by providing "The Jester Has Lost His Jingle" books (in both English and English/Spanish) at no cost to children diagnosed with cancer nationwide. To date, 31,834 books have been donated to over 300 hospitals, including 5,473 books during this fiscal year. Support for this program comes from foundations, businesses, civic groups and individuals, with many donors honoring the memory of loved ones. Given limited storage space at medical centers, "Jester" books are distributed on an ongoing basis throughout the year according to each hospital's needs. Expenses for this program include the printing and personalizing of each bookplate acknowledging the donor(s) of each gift book as well as the cost of goods, communication, storage, packaging and shipping.B. Smiles on WheelsThe Jester & Pharley Smiles on Wheels program contributes directly to achieving our exempt purpose by providing health care professionals with Jester & Pharley Smile Carts filled with educational materials that give them effective tools to help their patients cope with cancer as well as chronic and acute illness. The mobile activity center is equipped with a TV, DVD player and CD/radio player for in-hospital diversion. The facilities also receive copies of the educational and emotionally supportive "Jester Has Lost His Jingle" book (in English or English/Spanish) and Jester & Pharley Doll for gifting to patients. Cost of a Jester & Pharley Smile Cart is $7,500-$10,000. This includes design, construction, graphics, electronics equipment, "Jester" books and dolls, and shipping/transportation. Fund-raising continued during the fiscal year 2015-2016 to bring additional Smile Carts to hospitals. To date, 49 Jester & Pharley Smile Carts have been donated to hospitals, shelters and other special-needs facilities throughout the country. The most recent Smile Cart was donated to Orthopaedic Institute for Children in Los Angeles, CA, this fiscal year.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0The Phund has three award-winning literacy and outreach programs that make it possible for students to join us in our mission to give Jester & Pharley books and dolls to children with cancer and other serious medical conditions in their community. During the fiscal year 2015-2016, students from 15 schools read 2,576,401 pages in their free time to give "Jester" books and dolls to hospitalized children. Altogether, during the past 15 years, students have read a total of 43,795,650 pages to help ill children with "The Jester's" message of hope, perseverance and laughter. Expenses for these programs include the printing and personalizing of each bookplate acknowledging the donor(s) of each gift book and doll as well as the cost of assemblies, communication, goods, storage, packaging and shipping.A. Reading Makes A DifferenceWe bring this sponsor-supported literacy program to low-income schools. Student participation in a Jester & Pharley Read-A-Thon makes it possible for the school to donate "Jester" books and dolls to children in their community with acute, chronic and life-threatening illness. The program ignites an interest in reading and encourages compassion for other children. The participating school receives a set of three Jester & Pharley Phund-developed teaching enrichment manuals and a copy of the original English or bilingual English/Spanish "The Jester Has Lost His Jingle/El Bufon ha perdido su gracia" for each classroom. Phund personnel and volunteers provide a PowerPoint presentation with motivating assemblies for all students. Support for this $5,600 program comes from foundations, businesses, civic groups and individuals. In the fiscal year 2015-2016, The Phund brought this program to seven underserved schools, resulting in 245 "Jester" books and 245 Jester & Pharley Dolls donated to local hospitals. Schools reported that students participating in the Reading Makes A Difference program also increased their grade-level reading, developed an ongoing interest in reading and showed growing empathy for others, reducing bullying.B. Reading Makes A Difference ChallengeThis program builds on the momentum of student participation in our initial Reading Makes A Difference program. Schools that have successfully completed a Jester & Pharley Reading Makes A Difference Read-A-Thon are challenged to surpass their past achievements. Sponsorship by foundations, local businesses, civic groups and individuals enables the students to donate copies of "The Jester Has Lost His Jingle and/or "The Jester Has Lost His Jingle/El Bufon ha perdido su gracia and Jester & Pharley Dolls to a local hospital. This fiscal year, seven schools took up the challenge, donating 215 books and 215 dolls to patients. Students at one of these schools - Jefferson Elementary in Compton, CA - brought the total number of pages read from 82,624 in their first program to a high of 306,261 pages read in their fourth challenge program. Sponsorship of $3,600 supports Jester assemblies and the donation of the books and dolls to hospitals. C. Reading To GiveThis Jester & Pharley Phund literacy program gives students from middle-income neighborhoods an opportunity to read in a Jester & Pharley Phund Read-A-Thon to raise funds to donate "Jester" books and dolls to young patients in their community. In the fiscal year 2015-2016 one school, Pine Hills Adventist Academy in Auburn, CA, raised a total of $870 in a Reading To Give Read-A-Thon that resulted in 30 "Jester" books and 30 Jester & Pharley Dolls donated to hospitalized children.
