Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Greyhound Adoption center rescues, rehabilitates and places greyhound dogs in loving homes.

Our mission is to find loving homes for rescued dogs, mostly racetrack greyhounds, but also non-racers and greyhound mixes. Our goal is to save as many dogs as we can while maintaining a quality program focused on each individual dog and prospective adopters' needs. To this end, we serve as advocates for each person adopting and each dog welcomed into their home as family.

FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

Conditioning running during the hot san diego summers, and we keep the dogs warm in the winter. Our facility is licensed, clean and well-maintained; our dogs are secure and comfortable. We manage expenses in a professional, businesslike manner. In 2017, gac sheltered between 55 and 70 dogs at a time in the shelter and in foster homes. 131 dogs were taken into the shelter during the year, 125 were adopted, 4 dogs died or were euthanized while at gac. Euthanized animals were primarily due to cancer conditions in older dogs. Spay and neuter surgeries totaled 108 in 2017, and 64 hounds were sheltered at december 31, 2017.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4B

Splinting, bandaging and rest, and at worst, expensive surgery and lengthy recuperation. Greyhounds requiring specialty medical treatment totaled 28 in 2017. Medical conditions included eye problems, broken bones (sometimes requiring amputation of limbs), internal medical issues, heart conditions, and seizures. Gac provided funds that totaled 57,084 for the treatment of specialty medical conditions. Gac intends to increase fundraising efforts to continue to provide treatment for severely injured greyhounds in the future, and possibly to improve racetrack conditions at the caliente mexico racetrack to attempt to reduce the number of severely injured greyhounds.

ONCE THE DOGS HAVE GONE THROUGH OUR EXTENSIVE MEDICAL REGIMEN WHICH INCLUDES A COMPLETE WORKUP FROM BLOOD TESTS AND VACCINATIONS TO NEUTERING/SPAYING AND DENTISTRY THEN THE DOGS ARE AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION. WE WANT TO ENSURE THAT ADOPTIVE FAMILIES RECEIVE HEALTHY PETS AND WE TAKE THE ADOPTION PROCESS EVEN FURTHER BY HELPING ADOPTERS CHOOSE A WELL-MATCHED DOG WHO BEST SUITS THEIR LIFESTYLE AND THEIR NEEDS. WE TAKE CARE TO EVALUATE EACH DOG, CREATING A PROFILE THAT WE THEN COMPLEMENT WITH AN ADOPTER'S PROFILE, WHICH HAS BEEN PREPARED BY A TRAINED VOLUNTEER. WE OPERATE AN ADOPTION CENTER THAT HOUSES 50 DOGS. WE KEEP THE AIR CONDITIONING RUNNING DURING THE HOT SAN DIEGO SUMMERS, AND WE KEEP THE DOGS WARM IN THE WINTER.
