Activity 2

Civic Engagement: CCF seeks to realize a vision of "safe, thriving and diverse communities" for all Angelenos by creating a sense of common purpose and destiny. CCF firmly believes ordinary people can affect the outcomes of larger issues in their lives through collective engagement in problem-solving. Realizing that grant dollars alone are not enough to address complex regional challenges, CCF plays a leading role in convening and supporting partnerships that engage local residents in the life of L.A. County. Initiatives in 2010 included: - 2010 Census: Because of concern for the number and size of hard-to-count populations in L.A., CCF led a yearlong concerted effort and invested $1.5 million to ensure an accurate census count in the county. Utilizing innovative approaches to cross-sector collaboration, strategic grantmaking, and the use of data and technology tools, CCF achieved its stated goal of a 70 percent or better participation rate. - Immigrant Integration Initiative: CCF continued its five-year effort to ease and accelerate the integration of immigrants into the social, civic and economic life of Los Angeles and provide opportunities for them to contribute to society and the local economy through increased access to social services by immigrants, improved fluency in English among immigrants, and improved interactions between immigrants and non-immigrants. - Los Angeles Preschool Advocacy Initiative: CCF continued its multi-year effort to increase access to quality preschool education for underserved communities and support efforts that address the child care and development needs of children, ages 0-5. - El Monte Community Building Initiative: CCF reached the halfway point in its 10-year commitment to improving life, health outcomes and educational opportunities for children and youth growing up in the suburb of El Monte through grants and other dedicated resources.

Activity 3

Donor Serviced Funds: CCF manages more than 1,600 charitable funds created by people who have entrusted the community foundation with their legacy. Almost all funds are donor serviced. Some have active donors and others are deceased, both of whom we continue to serve. CCF invests these assets and uses their earnings to make grants that benefit communities throughout Los Angeles and elsewhere. In 2009-2010, CCF distributed $68 million in grants from Donor Advised Funds established and advised by individuals, families, corporations and organizations. Donors also contributed to several special funds at CCF from which nearly $220,000 in grants were made: - Pass It Along Fund: Grants were made to 16 nonprofits to assist clients facing extreme hardship and dire needs, with the requirement that recipients somehow return the "act of kindness" to others in need - Summer Youth Fund: YMCA of Metropolitan LA and the City of L.A.'s Summer Night Lights received grants that allowed 4,200 low-income and at-risk youth to enjoy summer camp, organized sports and other activities.
