Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 2

Founder, Joni Earecksen Tada, and Board Member, Ken Tada, are married. President, N. Douglas Mazza, and Vice President of Development, Lorraine Mazza, are married.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11

The Form 990 is prepared and reviewed by an independent CPA firm. The return is also reviewed by selected internal management. Finally, a copy of the Form 990 and supporting schedules are posted on the organizations intranet where board members may access for review and comment before filing.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12C

Conflict of interest policy along with disqualified persons are reviewed and signed by the Board of Directors during the spring semi-annual meeting. Any and all contracts on behalf of Joni and Friends are reviewed and signed by the Executive Vice President ensuring compliance with the conflict of interest policy concerning the Board of Director members.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15

The Compensation Committee of the Board of Directors reviews the salary of all top management officials. They use comparable data from salary surveys of other similar non-profit entities, current financial status and contemporaneous substantiation. Their recommendation is provided to the full Board for a final vote. This is documented in the minutes.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19

Joni and Friends makes its governing documents, conflict of interest policy, and financial statements available upon written request.

Form 990, Part VII

Ken Tada Compensation: Ken Tada serves on the Board of the Organization and is also employed by Joni and Friends as a part-time employee. The compensation that he receives is not for his service on the Board, it is purely reflective of the pay he receives due to his employment with the Organization.

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part XI, Line 2C:

The organization did not change its oversight or selection process during the tax year.

Financial Statement Notes

Part V, Line 4:

Endowment funds will be held in full, pending Board of Directors decision on allocating the funds. The endowment was provided by a donor for the intent to start an endowment. Spending the corpus would require the Board fo Directors approval.

Part X, Line 2:

The financial statement effects of a tax position taken or expected to be taken are recognized in the financial statements when it is more likely than not, based on the technical merits, that the position will be sustained upon examination. Interest and penalties, if any, are included in expenses in the statements of activities. As of December 31, 2013 and 2012, Joni and Friends had no uncertain tax positions that qualify for recognition or disclosure in the financial statements. JAF files information tax returns in the U.S. and various states. JAF is generally no longer subject to U.S. federal and state income tax examinations by tax authorities for years before 2009.

Part XI, Line 4B - Other Adjustments:

Cost of goods sold reported on Part VIII, Line 10b -251,562.

Part XII, Line 2D - Other Adjustments:

Cost of goods sold reported on Part VIII, Line 10b 251,562.

IRS990/Desc0Joni and Friends' Wheels for the World program provides a free wheelchair, along with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, to people affected by disability worldwide. Joni and Friends volunteers collect used, but restorable, wheelchairs. Inmates then restore the wheelchairs to like-new condition in correctional facilities across the United States. Joni and Friends wheelchair deliveries are always accompanied by volunteer teams of disability service providers who specially fit each wheelchair to the recipient with no church or religious affiliation required. Every chair recipient will receive a Bible in his/her own language and an offer to discuss the Bible and receive prayer. The Gospel is lovingly shared with recipients, family members, and friends by local pastors. Joni and Friends partners with disability ministries in select countries on a permanent basis, which is key to the lasting presence and impact of a wheelchair outreach. This long-term relationship is achieved through strategic country partnerships.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Joni and Friends Family Retreats provide a unique service to families caring for a disabled family member by providing a safe place for families affected by disability to receive Christian counsel, encouragement, and resources to help with the daily challenges of life with a disability. Dozens of organizations offer camps ranging from a few days to eight weeks for children, teens, and adults with various disabilities. However, Joni and Friends knows of no other organization that provides the special opportunity for entire families to attend a retreat together where each person -- able bodied and disabled -- receives love, attention, and personally fulfilling activities while the family also receives rejuvenating rest, attends informative sessions, spends time with each other, and has opportunities to grow in their faith in Christ.Wounded Warrior GetawayThe Wounded Warrior Getaway serves soldiers that have returned home from service in Afghanistan or Iraq with life-altering disabilities. Their marriages and families are in crisis due to the consequences of a sudden disability. At the Warrior Getaway, families are strengthened and care-givers (parents and/or spouses) receive the support and resources they need. Long-term benefits from the Warriors Getaway include: healed marriages, and soldiers that speak of new-found hope and ability to handle their new situation in life. To honor these men and women and their service to our country, the cost for attending the Warrior Getaway is 100% sponsored for each warrior and their family. International Family RetreatThe Joni and Friends International Family Retreats are modeled after our National Family Retreats, but are modified to reflect the culture of the host community. Through culturally relevant and sensitive International Family Retreats, families affected by disability find a safe place to receive Christian counsel, encouragement, information and resources to help with the daily challenges of life with a disability. This program is strengthening the foundation of the family unit and is touching one of the world's largest unreached populations - people affected by disability.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0The Christian Institute on Disability will educate and train a new generation of pastors and lay leaders in the importance of disability ministry. The CID includes the following components: Education and Training: Degree programs - from undergraduate through Master's Degrees - and course work designed to equip a new generation of leaders for effective disability ministry. Internship program: Offering various training opportunities including: a certificate program in disability ministry, hands-on training at a Family Retreat, and/or ministry training at a Joni and Friends office. Public Policy: Shaping culture with a Biblical world view on issues concerning the sanctity of human life. Total Access Total Access empowers churches in nations around the world to make schools, homes, and hospitals more accessible to people with physical disabilities. Our vision is to partner with churches, ministries, and individuals in the U.S. by putting together small teams of construction professionals and support people. These teams labor alongside our International Partners to build ramps, widen doorways, and do other projects for people using wheelchairs, walkers, and canes. Teams also give out Bibles and devotional materials, while in-country partner churches handle the evangelism and follow-up.
