Mission and Program Overview

Mission

To provide veterans and active duty military patients receiving care at u.s. Federal, state, military, commercial medical, ambulatory care or extended care facilities, with therapeutic arts and crafts kits. The kits help in keeping hands active and minds alert during days and sometimes even weeks of recuperation after treatment, surgery or rehabilitation. Arts and crafts kits, along with other therapeutic products and services hhv provides, come as a very welcome assurance to veteran patients that they have not been forgotten, and that "someone out there really does care." hhv provides a meaningful way for individuals, corporations, or other nonprofit organizations to help wounded or disabled veterans, military patients, and their families rebuild their lives.with an increased demand for services placed upon the federal, state and commercial health care institutions, hhv continues to focus on its delivery of products and support to military patients of the present and the past.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

The organization accounts for uncertain tax positions under fasb asc 740, income taxes. Fasb asc 740 clarifies the accounting for uncertainty in income taxes recognized in an enterprise's financial statements. Fasb asc 740 prescribes a comprehensive model for recognizing, measuring, presenting, and disclosing in financial statements tax positions taken or expected to be taken on a tax return, including positions that the organization is exempt from income taxes. The organization believes that it has appropriate support for any tax positions taken and as such, does not have any uncertain tax positions that are material to the financial statements. The organization's federal return of organization exempt from income tax (form 990) is subject to examination by the internal revenue service, generally for three years after they are filed.

IRS990/Desc0THERAPEUTIC MATERIALS THAT INCLUDED 232,198 ARTS AND CRAFTS KITS WITH A RETAIL VALUE OF $4,688,540 WERE DELIVERED FREE OF CHARGE IN 675 SHIPMENTS TO: 17 MILITARY MEDICAL FACILITIES; 59 STATE VETERANS HOMES; 20 COMMUNITY BASED CRAFTS LOCATIONS AND 17 VETERAN PROGRAMS. THIS NUMBER INCLUDES 498 CRAFT KITS WITH A RETAIL VALUE OF $8,906 TO GERMANY; AND 116 CRAFT KITS WITH A RETAIL VALUE OF $3,077 TO THE USS GEORGE H.M. BUSH. ADDITIONALLY, 290,605 ARTS AND CRAFTS KITS AND 120 COMPUTER SYSTEMS WERE SHIPPED TO THE INDIVIDUAL HOMES OF MORE THAN 16,000 VETERANS RECEIVING MEDICAL CARE FOR A TOTAL RETAIL VALUE OF $7,969,688. SINCE INCEPTION TO JULY 31, 2014, HHV HAS MADE 32,651 SHIPMENTS TO VA HOSPITALS, MILITARY HOSPITALS, STATE VETERANS' NURSING HOMES, COMMUNITY BASED CRAFT CENTER LOCATIONS, VETERAN PROGRAMS AND TO INDIVIDUAL HOMEBOUND VETERANS, TOTALING OVER 29 MILLION CRAFT KITS AND PRODUCTS. THIS IS A RETAIL VALUE EXCEEDING $458 MILLION, INCLUDING THE COST OF USPS POSTAGE. OVER THE LAST TWO FISCAL YEARS, 41,250 INDIVIDUAL CRAFT KITS WERE DISTRIBUTED ON AVERAGE, EACH MONTH. THE ORGANIZATION CONTINUES TO EXPAND ITS CRAFT KIT DISTRIBUTION TO ACTIVE DUTY MILITARY PERSONNEL HOSPITALIZED IN WALTER REED ARMY MEDICAL CENTER, TRIPLER ARMY MEDICAL CENTER, AND BROOKE ARMY MEDICAL CENTER BY CONTINUING THE ASSIGNMENTS OF CRAFT CARE SPECIALISTS TO THOSE MILITARY FACILITIES. THE YOUNG MALE AND FEMALE MILITARY PATIENTS ARE MOST APPRECIATIVE OF THIS "MEDICINE THAT DOES NOT COME IN A BOTTLE." THROUGH THE INTRODUCTION OF ITS NEW ARTS AND CRAFTS DISTRIBUTION CENTERS IN BERWYN, ILLINOIS (NEAR CHICAGO); BAY PINES, FLORIDA; TEMPLE, TEXAS, AND GRAND JUNCTION, COLORADO, HHV IS NOW ABLE TO PROVIDE THERAPEUTIC ARTS AND CRAFTS PRODUCTS DIRECTLY INTO THESE COMMUNITIES. IN ADDITION TO THE DISTRIBUTION CENTERS, HHV HAS ESTABLISHED COMMUNITY BASED ARTS AND CRAFTS CENTERS (CBC'S) TO FURTHER EXPAND SERVICE TO ALL VETERAN AND MILITARY MEDICAL PATIENTS ACROSS THE NATION. ELIGIBILITY TO PARTICIPATE REQUIRES MEETING ANY ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:- A VETERAN WHO HAS RECEIVED ANY FORM OF HEALTH CARE FROM ANY PUBLIC OR PRIVATE HEALTHCARE PROVIDER WITHIN THE LAST SIX MONTHS;- A RESERVIST OR INDIVIDUAL ON ACTIVE MILITARY DUTY WHO HAS RECEIVED HEALTH CARE FROM ANY PUBLIC OR PRIVATE HEALTHCARE PROVIDER WITHIN THE LAST SIX MONTHS; OR- A VETERAN OR PERSON WHO SERVED - PAST OR PRESENT - IN THE U.S. MILITARY AND RESIDES IN ANY PUBLIC OR PRIVATE EXTENDED CARE CENTER OR NURSING HOME.MANY MILITARY AND VETERAN PATIENTS ARE RELEASED TO HOME-BASED AND OTHER OUTPATIENT/AMBULATORY CARE THERAPY AND REHABILITATION PROGRAMS. AS SUCH, THEY ARE NO LONGER ABLE TO ACCESS HHV ARTS AND CRAFTS IN THE HOSPITAL SETTING AS THEY HAD IN THE PAST. BECAUSE OF THIS, NEW INITIATIVES HAVE BEEN ESTABLISHED TO EXPAND HHV'S PATIENT HOME REHABILITATION (PHR) PROGRAM, ALLOWING THERAPEUTIC ARTS AND CRAFTS KITS TO BE MAILED DIRECTLY TO THOSE VETERANS OR ACTIVE DUTY MILITARY SERVICE MEMBERS AT THEIR OWN HOMES. (A MORE DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PHR PROGRAM FOLLOWS.)HHV'S GOAL IS TO CONTINUE TO MOVE FORWARD IN ALLOWING ALL MILITARY AND VETERAN PATIENTS ACCESS TO ITS THERAPEUTIC ARTS AND CRAFT KITS TO CONTINUE THEIR THERAPY AT CBC LOCATIONS, OR EVEN AT HOME.HHV CURRENTLY HAS A CBC SPECIALIST IN THE FOLLOWING LOCATIONSSTATE COMMUNITY PHONE CONTACT #:ALABAMA BIRMINGHAM (205) 218-8248CALIFORNIA FRESNO (559) 403-3424 LOMA LINDA (909) 358-0708COLORADO DENVER (303) 261-5783 GRAND JUNCTION (970) 424-0499FLORIDA BAY PINES (727) 592-4987 GAINESVILLE (352) 410-9306 TAMPA (813) 454-3763ILLINOIS CHICAGO (773) 895-1611 HINES (630) 229-8828IOWA DES MOINES (515) 441-1495MARYLAND PERRY POINT (443) 517-8503NEW MEXICO ALBUQUERQUE (505) 225-9758NEW YORK BATH (607) 232-1810 BUFFALO (716) 335-2919NORTH CAROLINA DURHAM (919) 525-7951PENNSYLVANIA BUTLER (724) 931-0434TEXAS TEMPLE (254) 773-8900UTAH SALT LAKE CITY (801) 529-2088VIRGINIA RICHMOND (804) 503-4391 HELP HOSPITALIZED VETERANS HAS TAKEN STEPS TO KEEP UP WITH THE DEMAND FOR ITS THERAPEUT

THE MAILINGS PROVIDE INFORMATION ON VARIOUS WAYS TO ASSIST THE VETERAN PATIENT COMMUNITY, EITHER THROUGH FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO PROVIDE THE PRODUCTS AND SERVICES, VOLUNTEERING, OR BECOMING PEN PALS, OFFERING A WAY TO SHOW SUPPORT AND CARE FOR VETERANS. ADDITIONALLY, PUBLIC AWARENESS AND SUPPORT IS ACCOMPLISHED THROUGH HHV'S VETERANS CONCERT ("SALUTE TO AMERICA") SERIES, AS WELL AS PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENTS, NEWS RELEASES, UPDATED INFORMATION ON THE HHV WEB SITE, AND MAILINGS. THESE INITIATIVES SUPPORT OTHER VETERANS ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS THROUGH THE USE OF AUTHORIZED PHOTOS AND INFORMATION RECEIVED FROM PATIENTS, FAMILIES, CLINICIANS AND ADMINISTRATORS. SOCIAL MEDIA ACTIVITIES HAVE INCREASED AS WELL, WITH CONSCIOUS EFFORTS MADE TO EXPAND CUSTOMER (AND POTENTIAL CUSTOMER) AWARENESS THROUGH HHV'S FACEBOOK ACCOUNT.THIS PAST YEAR, SPECIFIC OUTREACH WAS MADE TO THE DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE, US VETS (TRANSITIONAL HOUSING CENTERS) AND OTHER LOCATIONS TO INITIATE FORMAL PARTNERSHIPS WITH THOSE ENTITIES AND THEIR OWN PATIENT REHABILITATION PROGRAMS. EFFORTS WERE ALSO MADE WITH OPERATION SHOEBOX, AN ORGANIZATION THAT PREPARES CARE PACKAGES FOR ACTIVE DUTY TROOPS. AS A RESULT, HHV HAS PROVIDED OPERATION SHOEBOX WITH MORE THAN 10,000 CRAFT KITS FOR THEIR MAILINGS TO DEPLOYED MILITARY SERVICEMEN AND WOMEN. ADDITIONAL SPONSORSHIPS INCLUDE SUPPORT OF NOT-FOR-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS INCLUDING "RE-CREATION, USA," AND BUGLES ACROSS AMERICA. THIS PAST YEAR, HHV BECAME A COMMEMORATIVE PARTNER IN THE DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE'S VIETNAM WAR COMMEMORATION, A PROGRAM RECOGNIZING AMERICA'S VIETNAM VETERANS AND THEIR FAMILIES ON THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THAT WAR. THE PROGRAM WAS FEATURED IN NEWS RELEASES AND ON THE WEB SITE, WITH VIETNAM VETERANS SPECIFICALLY RECOGNIZED AT ALL CONCERTS IN THE VETERAN CONCERT SERIES; A COMMEMORATIVE CRAFT KIT DEDICATED TO THOSE VETERANS WAS ALSO MADE AVAILABLE AT THESE EVENTS. IN ADDITION, HHV STAFF MEMBERS MADE PERSONAL CONTACT WITH SENIOR STAFF, PATIENTS, AND CLINICIANS OF MILITARY HOSPITALS AND STATE VETERANS NURSING HOMES TO ENSURE THAT THE QUALITY OF PRODUCTS AND SERVICES HHV PROVIDES ARE MEETING THE NEEDS OF THEIR VETERAN PATIENTS. LETTERS WERE PREPARED OR PHONE CALLS MADE WITH ANY MEDICAL FACILITIES THAT HAD NOT ORDERED CRAFT KITS FOR SOME TIME, TO ENSURE THAT STAFF TURNOVER OR PROGRAM FOLLOW-UP HAD NOT IMPACTED HHV'S PARTICIPATION IN THOSE INSTITUTIONS' REHABILITATION PROGRAMS OR ACTIVITIES. ADDITIONAL LETTERS WERE PREPARED TO RECRUIT NEW PARTICIPANTS IN THE PROGRAM.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0CRAFT CARE SPECIALISTS (CCS) ARE EMPLOYEES OF THE HHV ORGANIZATION WHO ARE ASSIGNED TO 19 COMMUNITY BASED CRAFTS CENTERS, 4 MILITARY HOSPITALS, AND 17 STATE VETERANS HOMES TO ASSIST STAFF IN CREATIVE ARTS COUNSELING AND CRAFT KIT DISTRIBUTION SERVICES. CCS POSITIONS ARE PROVIDED AT NO CHARGE TO THE INSTITUTION OR THE VETERAN PATIENT RECIPIENTS. AFTER HHV PRODUCTS ARE DISTRIBUTED, THEY WORK HAND-IN-HAND WITH BOTH PATIENTS AND FACILITY STAFF IN CRAFT KIT THERAPY. THE CCSS HELP TO RECRUIT VOLUNTEERS FOR THEIR LOCATIONS, WITH A TOTAL OF 57 REGULARLY SCHEDULED VOLUNTEERS WHO HAVE GIVEN 8,555 HOURS OF VOLUNTEER SERVICE THIS YEAR; THIS IS AN ESTIMATED VALUE IN EXCESS OF $192,000. MANY OTHER ACTIVITIES HAVE TAKEN PLACE THIS PAST YEAR TO INCREASE AWARENESS OF HHVS PROGRAMS AND SERVICES. THESE INCLUDE OUTREACH AT ALL OF HHV'S "SALUTE TO AMERICA" CONCERTS, TO LET EACH AUDIENCE KNOW ABOUT THE AVAILABILITY OF ARTS AND CRAFTS KITS AND WITH THE FREE KITS MADE AVAILABLE TO ELIGIBLE PERSONS IN THOSE AUDIENCES. THE HHV WEB SITE WAS COMPLETELY REDESIGNED, MAKING IT MORE USER-FRIENDLY AND EASIER TO NAVIGATE. INDIVIDUAL NEWS RELEASES HAVE BEEN ISSUED REGULARLY TO HELP SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT INDIVIDUAL HHV SUCCESS STORIES. A SPECIAL "LETTER FROM THE CEO" HAS BEEN PREPARED MONTHLY, INFORMING PEOPLE ABOUT ONGOING OR UPCOMING HHV ACTIVITIES. ALL FORM LETTERS (RECRUITING NEW FACILITIES, UPDATING CURRENT FACILITIES, THANKING DONORS, OFFERING CCS SUPPORT AND MANY OTHERS) HAVE ALL BEEN RE-WRITTEN. NEW GUIDELINES FOR THE CCS POSITION WERE DEVELOPED AND PUBLISHED. WE BEGAN THE PROCESS OF UPDATING ALL PRINTED BROCHURES AND PAMPHLETS, WHICH WILL SOON BE AVAILABLE TO NEW AND CURRENT FACILITIES, DIGNITARIES, THE GENERAL PUBLIC, AND ANYONE INTERESTED IN HHV. AN AGREEMENT WAS SIGNED DURING THIS FISCAL YEAR TO FILM A SPECIAL CABLE TELEVISION SEGMENT FEATURING HHV'S CRAFT CARE PROGRAM, TO LET THE AMERICAN PUBLIC KNOW ABOUT THIS OUTSTANDING BENEFIT FOR VETERANS AND THE MILITARY. INTRODUCED BY LARRY KING FOR HIS CABLE PROGRAM ENTITLED "IN VIEW," (IN A SEGMENT DEDICATED TO BENEFITS FOR U.S. VETERANS,) IT IS EXPECTED TO AIR (REPEATEDLY) ON SELECT CABLE STATIONS DURING THE FY 14/15 TIME FRAME.
